Falling For My Accidental CEO Husband-Chapter 245: A Drive
Chapter 245: A Drive
"Are you sure we’re only eloping to get married? This isn’t some elaborate plan to take us straight to the heavens, is it?" Aiden asked, his voice laced with a mix of dry humor and lingering adrenaline. Beside him, Serena struggled to catch her breath, her chest heaving as she gripped the steering wheel with trembling hands. The near miss had left both of them shaken, their hearts racing as if they were trying to outrun the danger they had just escaped.
"This is not the time for jokes, Aiden," she snapped sharply. "Dammit! That was way too close. And I hate it you’re calm even now!"
Aiden let out a low chuckle, though the tension in his eyes betrayed his own fear. He reached over to clasp her hand, his grip firm despite how cold his fingers felt against her skin. It wasn’t lost on her that he was trying to calm her down even though his own nerves were rattled. The coldness of his hands actually made her feel better. He’s been scared too.
"I know, I know," he said softly. "But maybe the universe is telling us something. Like... take a break, grab some pancakes for breakfast, and pretend we weren’t almost flattened into one large human and car pancake."
Her lips twitched, despite herself. Serena tightened her hold on his hand, finding a small sense of grounding in the contact. She forced herself to take slow, steady breaths, the tremor in her chest easing little by little.
She could still see the scene that had just happened replaying in her mind on a loop- the massive truck veering toward them, the driver clearly nodding off at the wheel, and the sickening lurch as she’d swerved violently to avoid impact. The sound of tires skidding on gravel, the sheer drop off the road’s edge, and the gut-wrenching moment she thought they’d lost control completely.
If not for the truck driver jolting awake at the last second and hitting his brakes, pinning them between his vehicle and the edge of the slope, they might not have made it. Minor scratches and a shaken psyche would have been the least of their worries otherwise.
"You’re quiet," Aiden said, studying her face with concern.
"Just... processing," Serena admitted. She gave his hand a quick squeeze, then let out a shaky laugh. "Breakfast sounds like a solid idea. It’s the answer to all life’s problems, right?"
Aiden’s lips curved into a smile, the kind that made her feel just a little safer in the chaos; as always. Leaning forward, he pressed a lingering kiss to her forehead, "Exactly," he murmured. "Breakfast. Let’s find the next stop and reset. Deal?"
As they drove away, Aiden cast a glance over his shoulder, watching the truck ease back onto the road. He released a slow breath he hadn’t realized he’d been holding. As long as it really was just an accident and not someone deliberately out to get them, he could afford to stay calm—for now.
They drove in silence for a while, the tension in the car gradually easing with each passing mile. Eventually, a small diner appeared on the side of the road, tucked between a row of trees and a gas station. The sign above it promised "Hot Coffee & Hearty Breakfasts," and the sight was enough to make both of their stomachs growl in agreement.
Inside, the diner was cozy, with checkered tablecloths and the smell of fresh coffee mingling with sizzling bacon. They found a booth near the window, and for a moment, it felt like things might return to normal.
That was until Serena’s mood began to sour.
She crossed her arms and shot him a scowl, her gaze drifting to his biceps, which were left bare because he’d been sleeping in a tank top and been ordered by his dear wife to go with her as it is.
Oblivious to Aiden who was wolfing down his breakfast, for the first time, Serena was not concentrating on her food. And it was not the meal’s fault. Nope. It was delicious. The problem was that her husband was much more delicious.
Why, oh why, did he have to look so maddeningly good even in something so simple?
Her irritation deepened as she noticed the growing attention from the other women in the diner. It wasn’t subtle. A few stole glances as they passed by, while others lingered just a little too long, pretending to admire the pie display but clearly sneaking peeks at him instead. One particularly bold woman even circled their table twice, a syrupy smile plastered on her face as her eyes raked over Aiden.
Serena’s grip on her coffee cup tightened. "You know," she began, "I like you looking sexy, but I don’t think I appreciate all the women buzzing around you like houseflies. I don’t think I am going to like you wearing a tank top anymore."
Aiden blinked, momentarily caught off guard, before a slow grin spread across his face. "Houseflies? That’s what you’re comparing them to?" he teased.
"Don’t laugh," Serena snapped, though the corner of her mouth twitched, betraying her. "I mean it. Why couldn’t you just throw on something less... distracting? You know, like a sack. You should have convinced me to let you dress when we left."
He chuckled softly, leaning forward on his elbows, highlighting his biceps even more. "So let me get this straight. You want me to look like a sack of potatoes to save you the trouble of glaring daggers at a few strangers?"
"Yes, exactly!", Serena answered with a pout before beginning with narrowed eyes,"How come you were never this jealous when I was with Sidney. I know you were a bit bothered but now that I think carefully, you were never this steaming jealous. Aiden, do you not like me enough?"
"I am not walking into that trap, Miss Dawn. I trusted you enough that since you’ve promised to be loyal to me, you would not cheat on me."
Serena pouted. "I trust you too. Doesn’t mean I am not jealous."
"You have no reason to be. I don’t have eyes for anyone but you."
Serena paused and then asked," What about your ex?"
