Chapter 279: Only One Thing

"How do you plan to handle them?"

Nate’s voice was calm, but the weight of his question filled the car like a ticking time bomb.

Aiden’s hands clenched into fists, his knuckles turning white as his jaw tightened. He didn’t answer, but the sharp, shallow breaths he drew told Nate everything he needed to know. The rage simmering beneath the surface wasn’t just anger—it was a storm waiting to break.

They had left the hospital almost an hour ago. Under normal circumstances, they would have been home by now, but Nate had made sure to take a longer route. The thought of driving straight back to the house filled him with dread. He had seen the look in Aiden’s eyes—the barely restrained fury—and he was certain of one thing: if they walked through those doors, Aiden wouldn’t hesitate. He would grab Charles or Kimberlee—whichever one was unfortunate enough to cross his path first—and he might just kill them on the spot.

Nate had tried reasoning with him earlier, stepping into Aiden’s path to slow him down, but the other man had almost knocked him over in his blind fury. It wasn’t just Aiden’s physical strength that had left Nate shaken. There was no reasoning with someone in that state.

With no other options, Nate had played his trump card: Grandmother. Grandma was in a fragile state already and at a time like this, Aiden had to be mindful of her.

Though Aiden had calmed down, Nate knew things might not be so easy.

Aiden sat rigid in the passenger seat, his entire body tense as if ready to spring into action at any moment. The faint tremor in his clenched fists betrayed the effort it was taking him to hold himself back. Nate could feel the crackling energy in the confined space, like the charged air before a lightning strike.

"Just take me home Nate." he finally bit out. "I’ll take care of them in my own way."

Nate sighed heavily, gripping the steering wheel as he turned the car toward home. The tension in the car was suffocating, and he cursed Ella silently for not being upfront about the truth. Whatever had happened, it had pushed Aiden to the edge, and now Nate was left to pick up the pieces and make sure their brother didn’t destroy everything in his fury.

But what if Aiden did end up killing someone?

The thought sent a chill down his spine, and he shook his head violently to dispel it. No, he couldn’t think like that. He had to trust Aiden—he wasn’t reckless, no matter how angry he got. He wouldn’t be so foolish... Would he?

The silence between them stretched thin as the house loomed into view, dark and unwelcoming despite the faint glow of the porch lights. Nate slowed the car, the tires crunching on the gravel driveway. Aiden shifted in his seat, his body still coiled tight like a predator ready to pounce.

As Nate brought the car to a stop, the two brothers exchanged a glance. Aiden’s eyes burned with restrained fury, but there was something else there too—unease.

"Did you call the police?" Aiden asked sharply, breaking the silence.

Nate blinked, surprised by the question. "No," he replied quickly, his brow furrowing. "Did you?"

Aiden shook his head, and for a moment, both men sat frozen, staring at each other in mutual confusion. Then, as if on cue, they both bolted out of the car, slamming the doors behind them.

Inside two officers stood next to Mabel Hawk, as the old woman looked pale. Before the two brothers could walk in, their way was obstructed by another officer.

Aiden paused and looked at the officer, who spoke quietly," Mr Hawk. We need to have a word with you. There has been a situation."

Aiden breathed in deeply and sent the officer a look," What is it, officer? Tell me."

"Your father, stepmother and wife have been kidnapped."

His father, stepmother, and Kimberlee... kidnapped? He exchanged a stunned glance with Nate, who looked equally blindsided. For a moment, neither of them could speak.

The officer cleared his throat and explained with a grim expression. "A few men in camouflage clothing entered the house forcefully about an hour ago," he explained. "They were masked, and it appears they knew exactly what they were doing. The police are working on identifying them, but we need to know if you have any knowledge of someone who might want to do this."

Aiden and Nate both shook their heads in shock. Charles Hawk had innumerable enemies, he was sure. But why would someone kidnap Kimberlee?

"We are wondering if you might receive a ransom call but it seems unlikely. Why would someone want to kidnap three people for ransom. So, we’re wondering if this is some kind of an attack on them for vendetta."

Nate snorted then. Whoever had kidnapped them had probably saved their life from Aiden.

Before Nathan could say anything about how Charles had probably had himself kidnapped, Aiden’s phone rang. frёewebnoѵēl.com

The voice on the other end was panicked and rushed. "Mr. Hawk, this is Dr. Pell from the hospital. I... I don’t know how to tell you this, but Miss Ella Hawk—she’s gone. Men came in, posing as visitors, and... they took her. They overpowered security and disappeared before we could react."

Nate’s brows knitted in concern as he watched Aiden’s expression shift, "Aiden, what is it?" he demanded.

"They took her as wekk," Aiden said. "Ella has been kidnapped from the hospital."

"Mr. Hawk, are you saying there’s been another kidnapping?"

Nate nodded while Aiden had a sinking feeling in his gut. All the people related to Serena’s disappearance had been kidnapped. How was this possible. Had Charles Hawk pulled another trick because he’d been discovered.

"We’ll get additional units to the hospital and the surrounding areas. Mr. Hawk, do you have any reason to believe these incidents are connected to a specific someone? I mean, kidnapping four people from the same family in a single night is not done without any reason."
