Chapter 288: A Visit

"Aunt Williama, how are you doing?"

Williama Brown almost fainted at the sight of the man standing at her doorstep. Her breath hitched, her fingers tightening on the doorframe as she stared at him in disbelief. What was he doing here?

For a fleeting moment, she considered slamming the door in his face and running—running as far and as fast as her legs could carry her. But she knew better. It was foolish to even think she could outrun him. Even if she had a head start, Dale Brown would catch up to her with ease.

Schooling her expression, she forced a smile and stepped aside. "Dale. Come on inside."

She shut the door behind him, her mind racing. Should she call her husband? Would that escalate things too quickly or would the COlonel be able to save her? With everything she had carefully planned, Dale should have been knocking on Kimberlee’s or Aiden’s door by now—not hers.

Why was he here? She should definitely call her husband but what if Dale was here for some other reason and calling her husband invokes some suspicion?

The thought sent a chill through her. Had he figured out her involvement in the entire scheme? No. That was impossible. Or was it? Her stomach twisted, but she pushed the feeling down, reminding herself that now was not the time to panic. Not with a man who could read minds sitting right in front of her. Also, her only imvolvement was not exposing Kimberlee and then later sending Ellle to him. Neither of which should bring harm to her.

She swallowed hard, willing herself to appear composed. Settling into the seat opposite him, she forced a casual tone. "Would you like something to drink? I can ask the housekeeper to—"

Dale raised a hand, cutting her off with a slow shake of his head. "I do want something, but it’s not a beverage." His sharp gaze pinned her in place. "I’d really appreciate it if my dear aunt would be willing to tell me the whereabouts of her ex-husband and her younger sister."

Williama went rigid. Her ex-husband. Her sister.

A slow thrill coursed through her veins at the mention of those names. So, her instincts had been right after all. The man was here to settle scores but instead of going for Aiden or Kimberlee, he was going for Charles and Millie first. That was just great. But did Dale know everything?

Forcing a calm expression, she leaned back slightly, tilting her head as if the question barely mattered to her. "My ex-husband? And my sister?" She let out a soft, calculated chuckle, though it didn’t quite reach her eyes. "Why would you be looking for them?" frёeωebɳovel.com

Dale smiled then, slow and deliberate, his gaze sharp with amusement—amusement that didn’t bode well for her. He raised an eyebrow, the motion both lazy and menacing.

"Mrs. Brown," he said, voice laced with mock civility, "just because I addressed you as ’aunt’ does not make you my aunt. And it certainly does not give you the right to question me." He leaned forward slightly, his presence overwhelming, suffocating. "The only reason you’re sitting here in the comfort of your home instead of being interrogated elsewhere is that you still carry the Brown name. But let’s be clear about something—if you were to suddenly disappear, my uncle would hardly bat an eye."

Williama stiffened.

Dale tilted his head, watching her reaction with the detached interest of a predator toying with its prey. "Especially," he continued, voice dropping into a near-whisper, "if he knew that on one hand, you’ve been shielding his daughter’s bad deeds... and on the other, trying to get rid of her."

The room seemed to close in on her. Her heart pounded against her ribs, cold sweat prickling at the back of her neck.

He knew.

He knew everything.

But how? Had someone betrayed her? Had he pieced it together himself? Her mind scrambled for answers, for a way out, but every path seemed blocked. What should she do now?

Dale leaned back, sighing dramatically. "Mrs. Brown," he drawled, his patience wearing thin. "Really? Taking this long to think? You must not take me seriously."

Something in his tone made her pulse spike with fear. He wasn’t bluffing. If she stalled for even another second, she had no doubt he would make good on his threats.

Panic clawed at her throat, and before she could stop herself, the words spilled out in a rush. "They’re in a safe house outside of Wexford—12 Maple Street."

She barely took a breath before she hurriedly added, her voice trembling, "What about me? I was not involved in any of this. I did not even know what was being planned and how Serena was related to you. And eventually, Kimberlee is the one who did the deed? What are you going to do with her?"

The question hung in the air, thick with dread. Even though she was nervous, there was an excitement inside her. She wanted Kimberlee to suffer and she wanted to see that happen.

Dale simply smiled and shook his head," Tsk Tsk, Mrs Brown. You are standing on thin ice and yet waiting for someone else to fall? I think you should worry about yourself first."

Williama suddenly nodded but then shook her head. All this mess still left one person free. Aiden. And what would he do with this information?

"What about Aiden?"

Before she had even spoken the words out loud, Dale had already disappeared from in front of her. Watching him leave, Williama gave a half smile. Well at least some of her enemies would suffer for it. Aiden was her blood so she could maybe overlook him for now.

However, she first needed to secure her position. Hurriedly, she made a call," Husband! Dale was here. Yes yes. Your nephew Dale. I don’t think all is well. He questioned me about Kimberlee. I don’t know what she has done to offend him but she definitely has done something."
