Chapter 287: Seduction

"Why the hell are you trying to seduce me, then?"

Serena’s voice was sharp, accusing, but beneath it lay something else—a hint of confusion and wariness.

Aiden straightened at that, his face now inches from hers. His grip on her tightened just as she tried to slip off his lap, preventing her escape. His hold wasn’t forceful, but enough to hold her still.

"You think I’m married and trying to seduce you?" His voice was quieter now, softer in a way that sent an unexpected shiver down her spine.

Serena frowned. Why did he look so... odd? His expression wasn’t one of amusement or arrogance, as she would have expected. No, there was something else there—something almost vulnerable, as if her rejection or her claim had somehow wounded him.

She shook her head, refusing to get drawn into whatever game he was playing. "Do you take me for a fool? Even if—" she hesitated before continuing, her voice losing some of its bite, "even if I give you the benefit of the doubt and believe that you weren’t the one who tried to kill me, I know you married your first love in my stead. Dam* it! You are wearing a wedding ring, in case you have forgotten. And if you think you can claim that it was done because I disappeared, I am not going to buy it! The truth remains that you are a married man."

Aiden’s lips curled into a slow, knowing smile, and his hands drifted upwards to span her waist, his fingers caressing her curves

"Ah, ah," he murmured and his teasing voice made her stomach tighten. "So that’s it, then? You won’t come close to me because you don’t want to be a third party?"

Serena’s frown deepened. This man... he was definitely up to something. The way he looked at her, as if he was dissecting every flicker of emotion that crossed her face, made her uneasy. He was waiting for an answer—she realized that belatedly—but what was the question again?

Damn it. Her mind was too caught up in the way his hands resting against her waist, too aware of the warmth seeping through the thin material of her dress. She could feel her skin burn.

Aiden lifted a brow, his patience thinning, and the movement snapped her out of it.

She hurried to respond, her words tumbling out in a rush. "Yes. I won’t come close to you... I don’t want to—"

Before she could complete her sentence, Aiden cut her off, his voice dropping into something deeper, rougher. "Then don’t come close to me." His lips barely moved, his gaze locked onto hers as he moved his head close to her ears. His lips almost brushing against her ear.. And then, with quiet certainty, he added, "But, Serena... your body wants me. Look at you."

Serena’s breath hitched. Damn him.

Her body was betraying her, and they both knew it.

Aiden’s smile turned lazy, almost predatory, "You say you don’t want to come close to me, but look at you, Serena," he murmured, his voice like silk against her skin. "You’re trembling."

Serena opened her mouth to deny it, but before the words could form, his fingers began a slow, teasing glide up her spine, tracing the curve of her back with featherlight precision.

"Your breath just hitched," he continued, his voice dipping lower, each word dripping with satisfaction. "Your pulse is racing." His thumb brushed the sensitive spot just below her neck, making her stomach clench. "I can feel it."

He looked down then, and as his fingers traced over the two protruding peaks, he whispered," These are aching for my touch."

Serena forced herself to ignore the way her body reacted to his touch, the way her skin warmed beneath his fingertips. She clenched her jaw. "That’s—"

"Unconscious, right?" Aiden cut her off, his smile wolfish. "You don’t mean to lean into me, do you?" His hand skimmed back up, fingers trailing over the side of her neck, lingering just beneath her ear. "And yet, here you are. Not moving away."

She stiffened. Damn him. Damn his voice, his touch, his everything.

But Aiden wasn’t done.

"You can lie to yourself, Serena." His nose brushed her ear, the heat of him making it impossible to breathe. "You can tell yourself you don’t want me, that you don’t feel this pull. But your body?" His fingers traced the hollow of her throat, pausing where her pulse pounded wildly beneath his touch. "Your body knows the truth."

Serena sucked in a sharp breath, her resolve hanging by a thread.

"Let me prove it to you," he murmured, his lips hovering just above her skin. "All you have to do is stop me."

And yet, when his hand slid lower, settling at the small of her back, she didn’t move.

She couldn’t. Thankfully, he did. He moved away from her and showed her the ring, raising his hand in front of her face.

"I indeed married my first love. This is the ring she gave me."

The words, though this is what she believed felt like a blow to Serena. She could feel her stomach drop at his words. But then, he continued," You are that girl, Serena."

Her eyes snapped to his. What did he mean by the words. Didn’t he marry some other girl? But...what about...

Before she could ask, he answered," Yes. Someone replaced you and took your place at the wedding. But we never spoke the vows. Serena... I can recognise you with my eyes closed. How could a veil have fooled me."

"Then? You’re married?"

Aiden leaned in then, their lips almost touching," Legally? No. I’m not married. In my heart? I was never divorced, Mrs Serena Hawk. You will always be my wife."

With that, he closed the distance between them and rubbed his lips against hers. Serena’s breath hitched and her arms came around his neck. She believed him. She trusted him that she was indeed his wife. And as a wife, how could she not respond to her husband?
