Falling For My Accidental CEO Husband-Chapter 297: A Fake Promise
Chapter 297: A Fake Promise
Serena woke up slowly, her eyelids felt heavy- as if they were weighed down by something heavy. For a moment she frowned. Did she sleep for too long? That could be the reason for the heaviness.
But then, the harsh fluorescent light above her head made her wince, and the sterile scent of antiseptic filled her nose. Her head ached—no, pounded—with such force that she felt as if it would split open at any moment. She groaned softly, turning her head just enough to take in her surroundings. A hospital room. Again.
A soft rustling sound caught her attention, and her gaze drifted toward the couch against the far wall. There, slumped over in an uncomfortable-looking position, was a familiar figure. He was sleeping, his arms folded against his chest, and his head bent backward at an extremely odd angle.
As if sensing her gaze, he stirred. His brows furrowed slightly before his eyes fluttered open. The moment he caught sight of her awake, he shot up from the couch and strode toward her quickly. His hands found her face, his fingers skimmed along her jaw as he whispered,"You’re up."
The relief in his voice was unmistakable, as if he had been holding his breath for hours and Serena could only stare at him. "Stay still. I’ll call the doctor."
Hurriedly, he leaned toward the bedside table, to reach for the call button to alert the nursing staff. But before he could press it, he felt a soft tug on his tie. His body widened slightly, and he turned his gaze back to her.
Serena was looking at him with a heavy frown of confusion as she questioned him," Who are you?"
His eyes widened in shock. His throat tightened as he tried to process her words. "Serena..." he whispered, his heart hammering against his ribs. This couldn’t be happening. Not again. Aiden looked at her with searching eyes as he wondered if the shock of seeing Ella had done something to harm her memory. The doctor had warned them that they should not do anything to put pressure on her brain.
While Aiden was still cursing inhis mind, she turned her head slightly, his tie still clutched in her grip, and asked, "Are you my husband?"
Aiden nodded dazedly, his mind still spinning from the realization that Serena had likely lost her memory again.
But before he could fully collect himself, and think of something to say Serena tugged at his tie again. This time, he lost his balance slightly and nearly toppled over her. As he tried to not crush her under his wieght, she grinned up at him mischievously, wound her arms around his neck and whispered," Hello, husband. I am awake."
Aiden blinked, his mind still sluggishly trying to process the situation when he finally saw it—the slight quirk of Serena’s lips and the teasing glint in her eyes. His breath caught as realization dawned on him.
"You—" he started, but before he could finish, she pressed a quick, featherlight kiss against his cheek. His head jerked toward her in surprise, only to find her eyes shimmering with unshed tears.
Before he could say anything, she leaned in, her fingers gripped the lapels of his suit as she pressed her lips against his. It was soft, warm, and filled with unspoken emotions.
Aiden’s body tensed for half a second before instinct took over. His arms wrapped around her, pulling her closer, holding her as if she would slip away if he loosened his grip. He hugged her tightly to him, breathing a sigh of relief. Dam* it! She’d fooled him! But that was okay! She still had her memory, remembered him and that was enough.
And then, she hit him.
"Ow," he muttered, pulling back slightly as she smacked his arm again.
"Are you trying to suffocate me, you oaf?" Serena scolded, half laughing, half crying.
Aiden huffed out a small chuckle and loosened his hold and helped her sit up carefully. His fingers hovered near her, ready to steady her. Once she was upright, she reached out and cupped his face in both hands, tilting his head this way and that as if studying him.
"I think..." she murmured thoughtfully, her thumbs brushing along his cheekbones, "I need to get your face tattooed on me somewhere. That way, even if my brain decides to shut down again, I’ll at least know who to look for."
Aiden let out a breath of laughter, his eyes softening. "You don’t need to look. Even if you always keep losing your memory," he whispered, "I’ll always find you. Because I can’t live without you."
Serena’s lips wobbled, and before he could say anything else, she threw her arms around him again, burying her face in the crook of his neck. He felt her exhale shakily and shudder as her arms around him tightened.
"When I was lying there in a pool of blood... in the wedding dress... I was so scared," she admitted, her fingers clenching the fabric of his shirt, her words muffled against him. "Not just for myself. But for you. I kept thinking—what will you do if I leave this world without you?"
Aiden closed his eyes, swallowing against the ache in his throat. His grip on her tightened for a moment before he leaned back slightly, pressing a lingering kiss against the top of her head.
She sniffled, then pulled back just enough to give him a critical look. "You’ve lost weight. Your jawline is all sharper now, making you more handsome."
Aiden smirked then and caressed her face," As long as you like it. If you want I can become all chubby..."
She giggled as he filled air in his mouth, pretending to be all chubby and he could only smile at the sound, even as his mind worked in
Serena frowned, her fingers tracing the sharp angles of his face. Then, her expression turned serious. "Promise me something."
"Anything."
"If something happens to me again... you have to take care of yourself. No matter what."
His jaw tightened, and for a moment, he said nothing. Then, slowly, he exhaled and nodded. "I promise."
But deep down, they both knew it wasn’t a promise he could ever truly keep.
