Final Life Online-Chapter 264: Star Island X
The orb slowly moved aside, and a stone passage opened behind it. The walls shifted with a low grinding sound. The light inside the chamber dimmed, but the path ahead stayed visible.
Rhys raised his hand. "Stop. Everyone take a moment."
The team paused. Breathing steadied. No one rushed forward.
Sophia focused again. "The pressure is stronger ahead. The magic feels more direct. Less puzzle, more judgment."
Lyra glanced down the passage. "So the temple stops teaching... and starts checking if we deserve to go further."
Caria rolled her shoulders and adjusted her grip on her sword. "If something attacks, I’ll hold the front. Just say the word."
Rhys nodded. "Only defend if needed. This place reacts to intent. We don’t want to look aggressive."
Puddle floated forward a little, light steady and calm. "Path safe... for now."
They stepped into the passage.
After a short walk, the corridor opened into another room. This one was smaller and simpler. Four stone platforms stood in a circle. Symbols glowed faintly on each one.
Aria crouched near the nearest platform. "Each symbol is different. I think these are meant for individuals, not the group."
Sophia frowned. "Separate trials?"
"Not fully," Aria replied. "More like personal checks. The symbols react to who stands on them."
Rhys looked around. "Everyone choose one. Don’t force it. Trust your instincts."
One by one, they stepped onto separate platforms.
The room reacted instantly.
Light rose around each person, forming thin barriers between them. They could still see each other, but the sound was muted.
Caria’s platform formed a stone figure in front of her, holding a blade. It raised its weapon slowly, waiting.
Lyra’s shadows moved, forming moving shapes that tested her balance and awareness.
Sophia’s platform filled with unstable magic waves that shifted with her focus.
Aria’s symbols rearranged themselves, changing patterns rapidly.
Rhys felt pressure, not physical, but mental. The platform responded to his breathing and posture.
Puddle hovered between the platforms, glowing brighter. "Friends not alone! Puddle here!"
The barriers did not push Puddle away.
Rhys focused. "Puddle, help where you can. Don’t break the trials. Just support."
Puddle nodded and split its light carefully, sending gentle energy to each platform.
Caria blocked the stone blade cleanly, not attacking back, only defending. The stone figure slowed.
Lyra stepped lightly, matching the movement of the shadows instead of fighting them.
Sophia controlled her breathing and shaped the magic instead of resisting it.
Aria stopped trying to solve everything at once and followed the simplest pattern. The symbols settled.
Rhys stayed calm, steady, letting the pressure pass instead of pushing back.
One by one, the platforms dimmed.
The barriers dropped.
The room went quiet.
A deep voice echoed again, calmer than before.
"You do not force. You do not rush. You adapt. You may continue."
A final door opened ahead.
Rhys looked at the team. "Good work. No injuries. No panic. That’s how we survive this place."
Puddle floated proudly. "Friends strong! Friends smart!"
They moved forward together, knowing the trials ahead would only grow harder—but also knowing they were ready to face them as a team.
The new door opened slowly. Cool air flowed out from inside. The sound of the temple changed. It was quieter now, but heavier.
Rhys stepped forward first. "Stay close. This next area feels different."
They entered a long hall. The floor was flat and solid. No moving tiles. No glowing traps. Just stone walls and faint light coming from crystals in the ceiling.
Lyra frowned. "This feels... too normal."
Sophia nodded. "Yes. That worries me more than traps."
They walked carefully. After a few steps, the door behind them closed on its own with a loud thud.
Caria turned. "No turning back."
Ahead, the hall opened into a wide room. In the center stood a large stone statue. It looked humanoid, tall and broad, holding no weapon. Runes covered its body.
Puddle hovered higher. "Big guardian. Not moving... yet." 𝙛𝒓𝒆𝙚𝒘𝒆𝓫𝙣𝓸𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝒄𝒐𝓶
Rhys raised his hand again. "Stop. No attacks."
The statue’s eyes lit up.
A voice echoed in the room, deep and firm.
"Those who pass must show unity. Power alone is failure."
The statue stepped forward. The floor shook once, then settled.
Caria shifted her stance. "It’s not rushing us."
Sophia watched closely. "It’s waiting. Like before."
The guardian raised one arm. Energy spread across the floor, forming glowing lines that connected the team members.
Aria looked down. "We’re linked. If one of us acts alone, the others will feel it."
The guardian moved again, slow but heavy. It did not attack. Instead, it pushed forward, testing their formation.
Rhys spoke calmly. "Stay together. No one charges. Caria, front. Lyra, watch the sides. Sophia and Aria, support only. Puddle, stay in the center."
Puddle nodded. "Puddle stay!"
The guardian swung its arm—not to hit, but to force them to move.
Caria blocked, stepping back instead of forward.
Lyra adjusted position, keeping the line tight.
Sophia reinforced Caria with light magic, careful not to overload.
Aria called timing. "Now—step left. Together."
They moved as one.
The glowing lines between them stayed stable.
The guardian paused.
It stepped back.
The runes on its body dimmed.
The voice spoke again.
"Unity confirmed. Control confirmed. You may proceed."
The statue returned to its place and became still.
A new passage opened behind it.
Rhys let out a slow breath. "That was not a fight. That was a check."
Caria nodded. "And it would’ve crushed us if we rushed."
Puddle spun happily. "Friends worked together!"
They walked forward again, deeper into the temple, aware now of the rule that mattered most:
Strength alone was not enough here.
Only teamwork would let them reach the end.
The new passage was narrower and darker. The walls were smooth, and the air felt warmer. Their footsteps echoed as they moved.
Rhys kept his voice low. "Stay alert. The temple won’t repeat the same test."
After a short walk, the passage opened into another chamber. This one had no statues, no symbols on the floor, and no visible traps.
Instead, there were five stone pedestals. Each pedestal held a crystal. All five crystals were cracked and dull.
Aria stepped closer. "These crystals are connected. I can feel it. If one changes, the others will react."
Sophia frowned. "That means we can’t act alone again."
Lyra checked the room. "No enemies. No movement. This is another test."
Puddle floated near one crystal. "Crystals tired. Need help."
