First Demonic Dragon-Chapter 1003: Why Do You Need It?
Chapter 1003: Why Do You Need It?
If you were to ask which siblings spent the most time together, everyone would undoubtedly say the twins.
But close behind them, Bashenga and Thea were a very tight-knit duo.
Similar to how Valerie was the first mother Bashenga opened up to, Thea was the first of his siblings with whom he formed a genuine bond.
Thea was a special existence to Bashenga. She was always amusing, and was one of the few who didn’t make him feel like a family oddity.
With Thea, Bashenga didn’t feel the pressure to be something other than himself. He found himself coming out of his shell all on his own. Sometimes even making jokes.
He babysat the twins a lot. Most people in the house might’ve been wary of letting him watch children all by himself without supervision, but Thea never saw a problem with it.
I think you like kids a lot more than you’re willing to admit, huh? Don’t worry, I won’t tell anyone as long as you babysit whenever I ask! She used to say.
Bashenga looked up to her. He loved her. She was his one friend. His sister.
And now she was gone.
Bashenga could barely see straight. His vision was filled with red. Everything hurt.
But his mind was sharp.
He knew exactly how someone could have summoned Thea, because it was one of the first stories about her life that she ever told him.
The others would probably put together where he had gone quickly enough. So he had to move before they could show up to stop him.
Bashenga had lost his parents and his eldest sister too close together. He was tired of grieving. He was tired of being patient.
He would take matters into his own hands. Consequences of the matter be damned.
- Asgard
"...I’ve got a bad feeling."
The goddess Frigg looked up from a golden chalice and tilted her head towards her husband. "You’re not usually one for paranoia... Should I be concerned?"
Odin thumbed the pommel of a silver cane. Today, he was dressed in a more modern fashion with a dark grey suit and neatly combed hair.
His lips were set in a thin line as he tried to understand the reason behind why he felt like this.
He looked around, and the sky was bright and sunny. Puffy white clouds dotted Asgard’s skies, as the occasional dragon flew through the sky overhead.
It was a beautiful day. And as he utilized his exemplary vision, he couldn’t find any instances of unusual strife within the realm either.
But maybe that didn’t mean anything. Odin is hardly the type of man to get these feelings for no reason.
"...I believe we might need to move our lunch inside, my dear. Better not to take any-"
"Odin, Son of Borr."
"Shit..."
Odin looked over his shoulder at the large tear ripping through the fabric of his realm.
From out of the gap, a single figure stepped into view.
Odin was already regretting the fact that he didn’t bolt when he had the chance.
Though it likely would have been a useless effort..
"Every time that you Nevi’im arrive within my lands, you come bearing trouble. I hope this time is a change of routine..."
Odin wiped his mouth with a napkin and stood up to meet his new visitor.
He didn’t recognize Bashenga exactly, but with the dark skin and elaborate cornrows, he could wager a guess as to his identity.
It helped that he was infuriatingly beautiful. Like a certain horned throuple he knew.
"One of theirs, I assume? You’re-"
"The prison. Where is it?"
Odin’s brow furrowed. "... That’s not something I’m required to tell you."
"Nor are you required to keep drawing breath."
Odin tightened his grip on his cane. "...Does your father know that you are here?"
The ground cracked underneath Bashenga’s feet.
Odin and Frigg warily took a step back.
"I’m... running dangerously low on patience today." Bashenga held up his hand. "For the sake of time, I suggest you answer my question honestly without deviating from the answer I want to know."
"Your parentage doesn’t give you the right to overstep, boy! I strongly recommend that you-"
"AAAGGGHHHH!"
Odin heard a shrill screech play at his side.
His mouth dropped in horror when he saw his wife’s form spontaneously combust.
But instead of staining the grass with her blood and entrails, she remained stuck in a perpetual state of destruction. And in an agony that was nothing short of biblical.
"How long she stays like that is up to you. Whether I fix her is up to you. Where. Is. The. Prison?"
Odin tightened his grip on his cane and spoke through gritted teeth. "I will see you hounded to the ends of the heavens for this..!"
"There will be no need. The likes of you could never force me to run. Now tell me what I want to know before I decide to visit your sons."
- An Unspecified Location
Bashenga stepped out of Odin’s portal and narrowed his eyes.
They had appeared at the bottom of a rocky canyon where not a single soul could be felt or seen.
Bashenga felt the ground rumble underneath his sandals. It was accompanied by a distant screaming and the noxious smell of poison.
"Open the way."
Odin ground his teeth together as he considered refusal.
He didn’t know why Bashenga was coming here so brazenly like this. But he recognized the eyes of a man who was on the path of scorched earth.
Over time, he was becoming increasingly sure that Abaddon could not have known that his son was here. He had to be indisposed in some manner or another.
Even if he didn’t care for the dragon, he knew that Abaddon didn’t let those under his banner run wild as they pleased.
"Are you going to make me ask you a second time?"
Bashenga’s impatient voice was all Odin needed to stop considering the things that didn’t serve him. For now, moving quickly was the only way to get by.
Odin twisted the handle on his cane, and it transformed into a long silver staff.
He struck the butt of the pole against the ground, and the entire earth rumbled loudly in response.
A bright blue walkway appeared in front of Odin’s feet. Shapeless and without form, yet strong enough to hold up even the largest nevi’im.
Bashenga and Odin stepped onto the bridge, and they immediately appeared before a large gaping archway.
Beyond the stone gate, three stone pillars were erected in a circle.
Each of the pillars was intertwined with ominous chains that seemed to be made of flesh and metal at the same time.
They held a suspended man in chains whose face was burned beyond recognition.
Looming above the man was a giant serpent too horrific to be mortal.
It’s mouth hung open constantly, and stark green venom dripped from two large white fangs and spilled onto the man’s face.
As the venom splashed onto his already burned skin, the man let loose a hellish scream. When venom landed on the rocky ground, a mild earthquake ensued that lightly shook the entire terrain.
"I’m here, I’m here..!"
A woman in a white dress rushed back towards the man from another entrance. In her hands, she carried an ancient bowl that might’ve even been older than Bashenga.
When she saw Odin, and the large, looming Bashenga standing behind him, she became afflicted with dread and terror.
"No...!"
Odin waved his hand dismissively. "Back away and be calm, Sigyn. We’ll conduct our business and be gone shortly after-"
"You blundering idiot...!" Bashenga suddenly cursed. "Decrepit piece of mongrel trash..!"
Odin witnessed the sky overhead turn pitch black.
The serpent that Skadi had placed within the prison suddenly shrank back in fear and covered it’s head with it’s body.
Odin struggled to maintain his bearings as the entire canyon trembled so terribly that it all seemed like it was going to come crashing down.
"What is the matter with you!? Quell yourself this instant!" Odin roared.
Bashenga raised a finger and pointed at the man suspended in chains.
A destructive beam of energy left his fingertip, and tore through the man’s body like he was made of tissue paper.
Odin’s face dropped as he watched the man’s body fizzle instead of explode.
Suddenly, the sound of glass breaking could be heard, and Odin reached a horrifying revelation.
Right before his all-seeing eye, the man in chains was replaced with a plush brown bear holding a notecard.
Did you laugh?
Odin nearly snapped his staff in half from his grip.
"YOU!" He pointed at Sigyn. "How long has he been gone?! Where did he go?!"
With their act up, Sigyn dropped her empty bucket.
Her frightened expression changed into a cold, amused smirk.
"Honestly, All-Father... you didn’t think I’d let him suffer for all that time without doing anything about it, did you?"
Odin was so mad he could barely see straight.
He raised his staff to strike the woman down, but stopped when she screamed without being touched.
Odin went from angry to horrified when Belloc ripped the goddess’s soul out of her very body. A far more excruciating fate than even the one his dear Frigg had suffered.
"... Is this realm not your own..?"
Odin felt beads of sweat run down his brow as Bashenga’s voice became unrecognizable. "What do you mean..?"
"You are supposed to be the All-father. The pillar of this realm who lets nothing escape his sight. And yet, the one prisoner who means anything to this place has escaped right under your nose..."
With Sigyn’s soul in his hand, Bashenga slowly lifted his head and locked eyes with Odin.
His eyes were all but completely consumed with black holes burning with hate and resentment.
From his left eye, a single line of blood ran down his cheek and dropped to the ground.
"If you cannot properly watch your realm as you have been charged to do, then maybe you don’t actually need a realm at all."
