Chapter 42: Lies In Righteousness!

Unlike my words and the carefree demeanor I was portraying, Yue Linxi and I were alert, sensing the hidden dangers beneath the surface of the seemingly clumsy display. As the group proceeded forward, I signaled to Yue Linxi, who nodded in silent agreement before moving ahead with the others.

I crouched down at one of the battered bodies, specifically the one Long Zhen had effortlessly killed as if squashing a mere bug.

I studied the gruesome corpse carefully, my brow furrowing deeper with every detail I noticed.

"So this is how they were able to do it..." I muttered, the final piece of the puzzle clicking into place in my mind. These weren’t just ordinary cultivators gone rogue; there was something more sinister at work.

Hovering my qi over the body, I reached out and slowly pulled upward. A gooey, writhing insect emerged from the corpse, twisting in a desperate attempt to escape my grasp, but it couldn’t resist.

I sneered in disgust before instantly snuffing out its life with a flicker of my energy.

Without hesitation, I waved my hand, summoning the familiar sight of my white flames.

They erupted from my palm in a deceptively gentle manner, their soft glow hiding the fierce power they contained. These flames, third among the seven most powerful in existence, consumed the corpse entirely, leaving no trace of dust as they flickered out with a thought.

I dispatched the remaining insects, these parasitic creatures that had been implanted in the mortals, transforming them into mockeries of demonic cultivators. Spirit Wyrms, I decided to call them-a fitting name for the tiny, wriggling pests that twisted lives and turned men into soulless puppets.

Satisfied with the cleansing, my senses swept the rocky terrain ahead. It didn’t take long before my eyes settled on something unusual a hidden cave deep in the cliffs. Inside, I felt a presence, several of them, waiting silently for us, no doubt planning an ambush.

But it was the man at their lead who caught my full attention.

Clad in black robes, his face hidden behind a mask, he stood out not just because of his aura but because of the odd item he carried-a peculiar umbrella, extended before him as if he were shielding himself from the rain or... the sun? Yet we were in a cave. Surely he wasn’t afraid of the dark?

A smirk crept onto my face at the absurdity of it, but it faded quickly. Beyond his strange appearance, the man was strong- far stronger than any of the enemies we had faced so far. My instincts flared, immediately putting me on high alert.

"Interesting," I whispered under my breath, my hand still hovering over where the last corpse had been reduced to ash. "This is going to be a challenge."

As Yue Linxi continued ahead with the others, I motioned for the group to halt just before the entrance to the cave. "Stay sharp," I said, keeping my voice low but firm. "We’ve found the real target."

I exchanged a glance with Yue Linxi. She, too, sensed the danger ahead, her sharp eyes narrowing as she readied herself.

Long Zhen, ever the brash one, cracked his knuckles, clearly eager for another fight. "About time we got something interesting," he muttered.

Ling Xueying, not one to be left behind, threw him a teasing look. "Just don’t mess up and let me show you how it’s done, Long Zhen."

He scoffed, but before he could fire back, Bai Lifen, the ever-composed strategist, stepped between them. "Focus," he said, his tone serious. "This isn’t a competition. We don’t know what’s waiting inside."

Ling Xuiying nodded, her hands already glowing with energy. "Let’s handle this quickly and efficiently," she said, always the pragmatic one.

As we walked on the uneven terrain, the rocky ground did nothing to slow our advance.

I couldn’t help but wonder about the enmity between the Demon Sect and the Sky Above Realm.

I knew more than the others with me—the so-called Demon Sect were simply cultivators like me, able to tap into the wells of the darkness affinity. Only a few of us could.

These cultivators hadn’t always been at odds with the "righteous" cultivators.

That is, until the latter declared war on them, forcing the Demon Sect to embrace the dark side of their power, calling upon creatures from beyond to aid them. The war that followed was massive, and though they fought valiantly, they were ultimately driven into the Abyss of Desolation. I couldn’t help but chuckle. Was I, too, destined to be labeled a dark cultivator?

Because, unlike the Demon Sect, my darkness was far more powerful—and that wasn’t even mentioning my other abilities, especially my Limitless technique.

The irony of it all was striking. I, the young master of the most powerful sect in the Sky Above Realm, which despised the Demon Sect to its core, wielding a darker power than they could imagine. If anyone knew... hell would break loose.

But my reasons for being here were simple. I wanted to see how strong their darkness was.

I craved a challenge. However, there was one matter I couldn’t ignore—their leader had dared to kill my sister. Unless that debt was settled, he was my only true enemy within the Demon Sect. As long as my family remained untouched, especially the women I had claimed, I couldn’t care less about their other activities.

One might wonder, what about the other realms? Were they enemies with the Demon Sect as well? A question for another time.

"Sister," I said as I caught up with Yue Linxi, tugging on her sleeve to signal her to slow down. We were close now. Close to the ambush.

I narrowed my eyes. "Long Zhen, Bai Lifen, and Ling Xueying, stay close to Chu Fengxian. Shi Wenyan, stay right beside me. Sister, take care of the other disciples." My voice was authoritative, and my orders were followed without hesitation.

Shi Wenyan and I led the way, the first to enter the cave. As soon as we stepped inside, I felt it. The air buzzed with malicious intent.

Before I could say anything, thousands of small swords, as thin as needles, materialized and shot toward me, moving faster than the eye could follow. Each one glimmered with lethal qi, a deadly aura that could have erased everything in its path.
