Yang Yi seized the perfect moment and pulled the trigger.

A projectile, swelling as it flew, burst out of the barrel, which immediately exploded into the shape of a trumpet.

After several uses, Yang Yi had already grasped the characteristics of the Roaring Mode: the shells fired would grow larger during flight.

At about twenty meters, the shell would expand to one metre; at fifty metres, it would swell to ten, just like now!

A shell ten metres wide slammed squarely into the monstrous, deformed bird bound above, piercing its chest and blasting open an even larger hole in its back.

For Suna, this was the first time she had felt the terrifying might of the Roaring Flintlock at such close range. She was stunned, her eardrums stinging from the impact.

Yang Yi, however, was already used to it. His left arm had gone numb from the weapon’s recoil.

But he dared not rest for even a moment, for that shot had not driven the giant bird away. It only caused the beast’s body to stall, pausing briefly in midair.

Perhaps it had wanted to escape, but the vines entwining it would not allow it.

Yang Yi immediately grabbed Suna, slung her over his shoulder, and sprinted straight towards the ship’s cabin.

The hundred-odd kg of weight barely affected him.

Like lightning, Yang Yi rushed into the cabin before the giant bird could fall, slamming the cabin door shut behind them.

Boom!!!

The massive bird, tightly bound by vines, crashed onto the deck of the Nightmare Star, pressing the skeletal ship deep into the sea.

White seawater surged in through the unsealed cannon ports and windows. Combined with the violent impact, the cabin descended into chaos.

The force of the collision was not quite a tsunami, but since the Nightmare Star’s hull wasn’t watertight, too much flooding could easily sink it!

Yang Yi clung to a corner of the ceiling, his toes and claws digging into the wall to steady himself, one arm holding Suna close.

She had already regained her senses, staring anxiously at the white seawater pouring in below.

Before either of them could react, another shockwave struck, this one from below, lifting the ship that had just begun to sink.

The blow came so suddenly that Yang Yi was unprepared. He lost his grip and fell.

Fortunately, in the instant he lost balance, he twisted his body, crashing down on his back and shattering two barrels, sending up a spray of briny white water.

Seconds later, Yang Yi and Suna staggered to their feet, soaked to the skin.

Thankfully, neither was hurt; the werewolf’s thick hide had absorbed the impact.

“Something’s coming up from below!” Suna exclaimed her first words since regaining her voice.

“It’s probably the Farmer! “

Yang Yi nodded, staying alert.

From above came a massive commotion; the ship continued to sway.

He knew exactly what was happening outside, thanks to the Penitent’s Armour, which granted him vision beyond the cabin.

Earlier, when things had been critical, he couldn’t afford to split his focus, leaving the armour stranded on deck.

When the bird fell and struck the Nightmare Star, the armour had plunged into the sea as well.

But it hadn’t sunk, because the forest below had pushed it back up, leaving it tangled among branches.

Through its eyes, Yang Yi could see the battlefield outside.

The giant bird was in a pitiful state: one wing pierced by the ship’s mast, its body riddled with a gaping wound, entangled by countless vines, some burrowing directly into its flesh to drain its blood and meat.

Visually, the bird was at an absolute disadvantage. Its frantic thrashing was useless, it only tightened the vines further.

“The Farmer is hiding underwater, it must have been waiting to ambush this bird. We stepped in, and ended up serving as bait.”

Yang Yi quickly assessed the situation, sending Suna a snapshot of what he saw to keep her informed.

The bird still hadn’t given up. Even if it meant sacrificing chunks of flesh, it struggled desperately to break free.

The deck had been completely wrecked.

Most of the salt scattered across it had been washed away by seawater, though a little still clung to the bird’s body, causing parts of its flesh to wither.

The stitched monster had also suffered grievously, half its body crushed beneath the bird, its flesh impaled by multiple vines.

Without a commander, the stitched abomination fought like the skeletal arms, driven only by instinct, lashing out wildly without strategy.

“Why is the Farmer after this bird?”

Suna, seeing the images Yang Yi sent, the Farmer was lying in wait for it. But delicious prey was abundant across the sea, why target this one so persistently?

“No idea. Maybe it just tastes especially good.”

Yang Yi didn’t dwell on the question. Instead, he urged Suna to move, because their situation was anything but safe.

Although the Nightmare Star was spared from sinking, it was surrounded by the forest. Several tree trunks had propped it up, their branches visibly piercing into the hull.

The Farmer was not only corroding the giant bird, it was also corroding the Nightmare Star!

Fortunately, the bony hull was tough enough that the branches had not yet penetrated the cabin.

Yang Yi made use of his stomach’s unique ability, letting it drink up all the standing white seawater inside the cabin, leaving behind only clumps of soggy salt.

His stomach’s capacity instantly surged to 33 cubic metres, but perhaps because it had once swallowed bullets, it showed no signs of rioting.

Afterwards, the two of them opened all the salt barrels in the cabin for easy access, pouring heaps of it onto the floor until it piled half a metre deep.

That way, even if branches invaded from below, they would quickly wither under the salt’s influence.

But other areas still required vigilance.

The branches eroded the hull like sprouting plants, buds would emerge in random spots, rapidly growing.

Only by sprinkling salt in time could further invasion be prevented.

The two of them commanded the skeletal arms to fend off the forest’s assault with vast amounts of sea salt.

Yang Yi took the opportunity to inspect the Nightmare Star’s damage.

Durability had already dropped by a thousand points.

The two collisions had only cost 600 points of durability. The rest of the damage came from the Farmer’s corrosion, which was still intensifying!

If this continued, the Nightmare Star would certainly fall apart!

They had to take the initiative!

Yang Yi prepared to control the Penitent’s Armour outside, to sever the branches clinging to the hull.

But then, the giant bird on the deck suddenly began to change. Its body started swelling.

Lotus-seed-like pods bulged from its surface, and from their vents spewed great clouds of yellow dust.

“This is…”

Yang Yi froze, his attention fixed on the powder.

The instant the dust touched the Farmer’s branches, colourful bumps resembling tiny mushrooms sprouted across their surfaces.

At the same time, the powder began to settle over the Nightmare Star.

“Damn!”

Yang Yi reacted instantly.

He grabbed a few planks of suitable size from the cabin and sealed off the remaining cannon ports and windows.

So, the bird’s weapon wasn’t hurling lumps of flesh but spraying corrosive mushroom spores!

Luckily, the spores spread slowly. Yang Yi sealed the cabin in time, preventing them from drifting inside.

Meanwhile, the Farmer’s erosion of the Nightmare Star came to a halt, perhaps pressured by the spores.

More and more branches from the dense surrounding forest turned their focus towards fighting the bird.

But the bird was far too small compared to the forest.

Without the advantage of flight, it was nothing more than meat on the chopping block.

No matter how it spewed spores, it could not compete with the forest.

Rip! 𝐟𝗿𝐞𝚎𝚠𝐞𝚋𝕟𝐨𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝕔𝕠𝚖

A tearing sound echoed from above, and suddenly the bird fell silent.

Yang Yi saw everything clearly.

The giant bird, its body already riddled by the flintlock’s earlier blast, was torn apart by countless vines, split clean in two.

From the cross-section spilled a white, peach-shaped orb: the Fruit of Bounty!

Dozens of vines shot forwards, their tips sprouting fine needles that pierced the fruit, sucking greedily at its juices.

The bird’s body, meanwhile, was discarded like worthless rags.

Almost every branch now vied to feast on the Fruit of Bounty, skewering it until it looked like a hedgehog.
