Grand Voyage : Surviving on a Ghost Ship-Chapter 221 - Seed of Bounty
Yang Yi held in his hand an egg-shaped object, emerald green and shining like a gemstone. As he grasped it, information appeared before his eyes:
【Name: Seed of Bounty】
【Description: A special variant of the Fruit of Bounty, born from a forest fairy (Fruit of Bounty) that refused to be digested. Its shell is extremely tough and secretes a layer of bitter mucus to protect itself from digestive fluids. If placed in a suitable environment or given sufficient nutrients, it will sprout again, growing into an entire forest. Because of its incredible regenerative power, it can be used as endlessly regenerating organic material and is considered a highly rare crafting resource. Can be inserted into a Monster Vending Machine for a summon draw.】
“A special type of Fruit of Bounty…”
Yang Yi glanced at the custom container in the corner, then back at the Seed of Bounty in his hand, torn between two choices.
He had to pick one of the two trophies to use for a capsule draw, while the other would be used to upgrade the Nightmare Star.
Long-term storage of a Fruit of Bounty was out of the question.
That thing was highly unstable; if it ever lost control and regenerated, it would be a disaster, possibly enough to destroy the Nightmare Star.
After some thought, Yang Yi decided to use the Seed of Bounty for the upgrade.
It was rarer, after all.
Using rare materials to upgrade a ship could trigger unique changes. That was his guess. If he guessed wrong, well, that was just the price of experience. If he guessed right, it’d be a huge win, a blood profit.
At sea, one’s ship was one’s foundation of survival; he couldn’t afford to miss any chance to strengthen it.
As for planting the Seed of Bounty and trying to control it, Yang Yi thought that was impossible, and far too dangerous.
Shen Guanquan had once tried to hatch and tame a forest fairy. The result… he lost the Farmer ship altogether.
Those forest fairies were deadly and decidedly unfriendly to humans!
Yang Yi opened his mouth and swallowed the faintly trembling Seed of Bounty back down.
That thing was safest stored in the Gluttonous Maw!
He then stowed the Penitent’s Armour displayed beside him into his ring, rubbed his belly, and left the laboratory, heading toward the Nightmare Star’s deck.
On the way, he checked his status panel, it had changed.
His Corruption Depth had risen again, now reaching 35%.
Height: 193 cm
Weight: 378.5 kgNegative status: Bloated Man, Agility -3, stamina consumption increased.
“Am I really that heavy?”
Yang Yi looked down at his stomach.
It didn’t seem much different from when he’d eaten the Fruit of Bounty, yet he weighed far more.
Maybe his body density had increased, his flesh becoming sturdier.
If he transformed into his wolf form… the Nightmare Star’s doors wouldn’t survive it. He already had to squeeze sideways just to get through.
“This ship’s too small. Hopefully, the upgrade makes it bigger, and roomier,” he muttered.
Still, there was good news. His Perception and Strength stats had both increased, and his Constitution experience had risen significantly.
Adding that to the Agility breakthrough he’d achieved earlier, his attributes had seen all-around growth.
His Mind stat was now the highest, base 9, with enough experience to soon reach 10.
And being fat wasn’t all bad, it meant his training experience gain would skyrocket. Once he slimmed down, he’d be even stronger!
Though… it also meant another long round of dieting was coming.
“Looks like I didn’t learn that spell properly. I probably need to wear the armor to use Oathbreaker Severance...”
Yang Yi checked his spell list, Oathbreaker Severance wasn’t there.
He squeezed through the cabin door with some effort and stepped onto the deck.
It was early dawn, the deck lit with drifting will-o’-wisps. The air was noisy, filled with chopping sounds.
Suna was directing skeletal arms and stitched abominations to clear away the remaining branches.
She had made several simple iron axes and handed them to the skeleton arms, ordering them to use sea salt and the axes to remove the rooted branches.
The deck was almost clean, only a few embedded roots remained to be dug out.
Yang Yi opened the ship interface: the vessel’s durability hadn’t increased much, still around 1400. Unless they cleared all those embedded roots, it would be difficult to start proper repairs.
The ship’s sides and hull were the biggest challenges; roots had penetrated into the cabins, blocking windows and gun ports. Clearing them all would be an enormous task for ordinary people.
And since the Nightmare Star had been lifted up by the forest, surrounded by dense trees and vegetation, returning to the sea would be another ordeal entirely.
“Suna.”
Yang Yi called out, striding forwards.
She turned her head and looked over.
“You’re awake. How do you feel?”
“No abnormalities,” Yang Yi replied.
That uncontrollable hunger he’d suffered earlier had vanished after waking. His Sanity was 92, and both Vitality and Stamina were almost full.
“What about your corruption level?” Suna asked again.
“It went up a little.”
“How much?”
“Seven percent,” Yang Yi answered.
Suna frowned slightly.
Yang Yi then shared with her the news that the New World Fleet was on its way.
With their help, escaping from the forest would be much easier, after all, they had hundreds of ships.
They were still over 200 nautical miles away from the Farmer and would arrive in about five hours, just around dawn.
Before that, Yang Yi planned to get the Nightmare Star back to sea. He walked to the ship’s edge and looked down.
The forest below was thick and tangled; he had to switch to his Three Eyes vision to find the sea surface.
The ship was about twenty-three metres above the water, with seven or eight large interwoven tree trunks and several thick roots clutching the hull.
“Shouldn’t be too hard…”
Yang Yi muttered, then jogged back into the cabin.
He sent Suna the information about the Seed of Bounty and explained his plan: first use the capsule machine, then work on freeing and repairing the ship.
When he came back out, he was carrying the special container that held the Fruit of Bounty. He approached the Octopus Vending Machine at the bow and tilted the container towards its tentacled mouth.
It sucked everything in like a violent whirlwind.
The Fruit of Bounty, along with a good deal of digested residue, was completely devoured in an instant.
“Burp~”
The machine let out a faint belching sound, so soft that Yang Yi wasn’t sure he’d actually heard it.
Then every tentacle of the capsule machine lit up, and it spat out a sticky capsule.
Yang Yi picked it up, it was a gray, fuzzy sphere.
【Name: Wings of Parasitism】
【Type: Relic】【Quality: Supreme】【Description: When implanted into the back, it grows a pair of feathered wings that grant the host the ability to fly. The feathers are both hard and sharp, capable of being fired like blades. However, the longer it remains attached, the harder it is to remove. It will also drain nutrients from the host’s body, growing larger and larger, until it eventually withers its host to death. After parasitism: Agility +2, can exceed mortal limits.】
“An item that grants flight…?”
Yang Yi shared the information with Suna, then carefully stored the relic away.
It looked powerful, but dangerous; a living parasite.
After putting it away, he transformed into his werewolf form, his body expanding to three metres tall, round, and massive like an enormous rubber ball.
He drew his Ironbreaker Greatsword, ready to sever the roots and trunks anchoring the Nightmare Star so it could fall back to the sea.
For safety, he slipped on the boots from the Penitent’s Armour set, so the vampiric tree trunks beneath wouldn’t harm him.
Once ready, he grabbed Suna and slung her over his shoulder like luggage.
“What are you doing!?” she exclaimed.
“When the ship drops, it’s going to shake hard. Staying on board isn’t safe.”
Yang Yi replied matter-of-factly, ignoring her protest.
“Hold on tight!”
He leapt off the ship with surprising agility, his bulk didn’t seem to slow him down at all.
During the descent, Yang Yi swung the massive sword with one hand, slicing through the thick roots tethering the hull.
He circled the ship, using his body weight and sword to hack apart the remaining trees.
BOOM!!
The Nightmare Star lost its supports and dropped three meters, nearly tilting sideways.
Yang Yi jumped down again, repeating the process to continue cutting it free.
Suna could only sigh helplessly; she had no words for him anymore. Thanks to his thick layer of fat cushioning her, she didn’t feel any discomfort.
After about fifteen minutes, the Nightmare Star finally touched the sea surface again.
Yang Yi climbed aboard, panting, and set Suna down.
He checked his stamina, seeing it was down by more than forty points.
Being heavier took a serious toll on his endurance; if his Constitution hadn’t improved so much, he would’ve needed two or three rounds to finish the job.
