Grand Voyage : Surviving on a Ghost Ship-Chapter 224 - Departure and preparation for the upgrade
Yang Yi returned to the Nightmare Star. About four hours had passed.
During that time, the skeletal arms had been steadily repairing the ship, while Yang Yi himself had been fishing. In full view of the others… he caught nothing.
The pressure was getting to him. Other than a long-legged sardine on his first cast, he had spent the next four hours pulling up empty lines.
“Must be this damn forest,” he muttered.
“It ate all the meat nearby.”
He could feel eyes on him, many of them, like thousands of ants crawling over his skin.
Finally, a private message from Zhao popped up.
“I’ve reached the area below the Farmer. Cleared enough space. Next part’s up to you, One-Eye.”
Yang Yi exhaled in relief. He stood up, put away his fishing rod, and went to the bow. The Nightmare Star accelerated towards the forest as if something urgent had happened.
…
“Guess One-Eye isn’t much of a fisherman,” someone said.
“Feels like I could do better.”
“Then why don’t you?” another asked.
“Forgot my rod.”
“I can lend you mine.”
“Ha… great weather today,” he said, looking up and whistling, pretending he hadn’t heard.
…
Before long, the Nightmare Star met up with the Ironhead deep inside the forest. The light was dim, as dark as night.
The Nightmare Star’s deck lit up with ghostly flames that drifted through the air, nearly spooking Ironhead’s crew into thinking it was an enemy.
Fortunately, Yang Yi’s unmistakable silhouette was easy to spot, and a friendly-fire incident was avoided.
“Those lights on your ship are something else,” Zhao said through the comms.
His own ship, the Ironhead, had its lamps inside the hull and a single large spotlight at the bow.
“Back off from the Farmer,” Yang Yi replied.
“If it drops, you’ll be the first one crushed.”
He checked his stats. His energy had recovered to 97. With the nutrients stored in his body, his recovery rate had gotten faster.
Once Ironhead was clear, Yang Yi’s body swelled again. In moments, he had turned into a massive, wolfish beast.
“Holy shit, he can transform???” someone shouted from Ironhead.
Yang Yi ignored the commotion.
He leapt into the trees and vanished into the forest canopy. Leaves and broken branches fell, splashing into shallow water below.
He climbed fast, unhindered by vines or branches, and soon reached the Farmer.
“Phew…”
He took a breath and checked his energy again, down to 57. The transformation burned through stamina.
Good thing his berserk state kept him conscious even if his energy fell below 30.
Standing on a thick trunk in his penitent armor boots, he examined the ship.
The Farmer looked almost the same as before, wrapped tight in layers of vines that formed a massive cocoon. But these vines no longer pulsed or regenerated. Their core, the forest sprite, was already in Yang Yi’s stomach.
He activated his third eye and scanned the area, figuring out which points to cut.
Once he severed the cocoon’s main attachments to the surrounding trees, the ship would lose support and begin to fall. The lower branches would break its descent, preventing the hull from shattering on impact.
After running the plan through in his head, he drew the Ironbreaker greatsword, held it at his side, and decided to practice some swordsmanship.
Without the Penitent’s Armour, he no longer had access to sword techniques or holy magic, so he’d have to rely on instinct.
Swish. Swish.
Yang Yi moved through the trees, slashing the connecting vines one by one. The first two swings almost looked proper; after that, it devolved into his usual wild hacking.
He didn’t care. Soon the last of the vines snapped.
The cocoon holding the Farmer began to drop, smashing through several trunks before getting stuck on a thicker one.
Yang Yi jumped down after it and started chopping at the remaining supports.
The Farmer broke free again and continued to fall.
After several rounds of cutting and crashing, the Farmer finally plunged into the sea. The impact sent up massive waves before the ship settled, floating on the surface.
Thankfully, the Ironhead had cleared enough space beneath the forest, digging through like an excavator. Otherwise, the fallen branches and trunks Yang Yi had chopped down would have become the last obstacle keeping the Farmer from the water.
Yang Yi jumped down, exchanged a quick word with Captain Zhao, then turned back towards the Nightmare Star. His job was done.
He had only agreed to free the Farmer. The rest, clearing the vines, killing the corpse creepers, and burning the spitting sunflowers, was the New World Fleet’s responsibility.
He drank a bottle of Vital Coconut Refresh, checked his status, and saw his energy at 17, dangerously low, almost to the point of health loss.
Still, the mission had paid off. He’d gained plenty of experience and earned ten tons of sea salt.
The Nightmare Star left the forest first.
Outside, more than a dozen ships were already lined up, ready to move in and reclaim the Farmer.
Their gear looked solid, each crew member wore light metal armor and carried an ironwood shield, protecting the vital spots without limiting movement.
The leaders were better equipped: firearms, belts and chest straps loaded with salt grenades. With that setup, dealing with the mutated plants on the Farmer should be manageable as long as they didn’t rush in blindly.
“Those two look off,” Suna said from the deck, pointing at one of the approaching ships.
That vessel carried only three people. Aside from the helmsman, there were two unusually tall figures. They were fully clad in heavy armour and steel helmets, with not a patch of skin showing.
Yang Yi studied them for a while but saw nothing strange.
“What do you mean? They look fine to me.”
He had already undone his werewolf form. Though not as tall as the armoured men, he was confident he outweighed them even in full gear.
“Their proportions are wrong,” Suna said, frowning.
“Their arms hang past their knees. And… they’re not symmetrical.”
After she said it, Yang Yi noticed it too. But after seeing so many abnormal things, his instincts didn’t sound any alarm. To him, “weird” had become normal.
They watched the ships enter the forest.
Then Yang Yi steered the Nightmare Star towards the Hope, waved at Shen Guanquan from afar, and turned around to leave.
The one million Shell Coins had already arrived, along with ten more tons of sea salt. He stored it all in his stomach space, planning to move it to the cargo hold later.
Itwas time to leave these waters.
Once the Nightmare Star’s durability fully recovered, he could finally use the Seed of Bounty to upgrade it to level four.
