Grand Voyage : Surviving on a Ghost Ship-Chapter 243 - Trying to fish
“Are you trying to save up for the guaranteed pull on the large blind box?”
Yang Yi asked Shen Guanquan.
“Something like that. I’m planning to gather enough vouchers and points to take a shot at the guarantee,” Shen Guanquan replied.
He had tested the blind boxes himself and found that the large one had a time limited guarantee.
But unlike Yang Yi, he didn’t have that many points, so he gave up on this round and decided to stockpile vouchers. Once he had enough for a ten pull, plus the points, he would try again.
So far, he had collected three large blind box vouchers, all from members of the New World fleet under him.
Yang Yi also learned one more thing from Shen Guanquan: the blind box had a hidden mechanic. The more you pulled, the lower the chance of getting high tier blind box vouchers later.
But Shen still wasn’t sure whether this mechanic applied to individuals or entire fleets.
“Sorry, I’ve used all my vouchers already. I don’t have extras.”
Yang Yi replied, turning down the trade.
And that was true. He didn’t have spare vouchers.
Even if he did, he wouldn’t trade them. He was saving up for the guarantee as well — just the second round of it.
He checked the world channel and noticed that besides Shen Guanquan, several others were also buying vouchers. Their offers were high, and most of them were fleet leaders.
Clearly, they were all eyeing the rare items hidden inside the blind boxes.
Yang Yi suddenly remembered the portal voucher he had drawn.
Was it really just an ordinary portal voucher? Could it be hiding something? He felt the urge to test it, but the voucher was with Suna.
He glanced through the gap in the captain’s cabin door and saw her on the bed. He couldn’t tell if she was asleep.
“I should wait until Suna checks it. No need to rush.”
He changed his mind. With the little time he had left, he contacted Zhou Dai and bought twenty bottles of holy water from her.
These had been blessed by the Radiant Goddess, so they might work against the darkness.
Even if they didn’t, he could still use them to brew sleeping potions, so they wouldn’t go to waste. Each bottle cost fifteen hundred Shell Coins.
Next, he tried to buy weapons or equipment related to the Radiant Holy Order. Even a single item might dispel the darkness.
Zhou Dai had a Radiant Holy Order knight sword, a Rare item. Yang Yi had seen the details of it before, so he tried to buy it.
But she refused immediately.
She said that according to the teachings of the Radiant Holy Order, believers were forbidden to privately sell holy weapons or armor, since they were divine gifts.
She hadn’t understood the doctrine before and had almost made a serious mistake…
Yang Yi was left speechless.
He gave up and searched the chat channels again, leaving purchase requests until midnight.
As soon as the clock struck zero, the world chat channel went silent as if someone had cut the signal. All messages froze at the last second.
Yang Yi sat on the bed in silence for a few moments, then left the captain’s cabin to check the vending machine.
Unlike before, the machine had not produced anything. It seemed the transaction delay was real.
He didn’t know how long the delay would last. It might be a day, or a week.
Yang Yi prepared for the worst. He might really be the player with the most remote starting position.
He walked to the ship’s railing and looked down at the sea.
Although the Nightmare Star was moving, it still couldn’t shake off the darkness clinging to its hull.
Yang Yi wasn’t sure if it was just his imagination, but the black mist looked more and more like a thick, viscous liquid. Its colour was much darker than before.
“Am I going in the wrong direction?”
He opened the world map and checked his route.
He had set the zero coordinate at the Nightmare Star’s starting point. That made it easy to track direction and distance.
Nearly twenty four hours had passed, and the Nightmare Star had traveled a long way to the right.
He hadn’t found anything along the way. It felt like his ship was the only one in this entire sea.
After struggling with the thought for a bit, Yang Yi decided to stick to his current heading.
Without a clear destination, changing direction constantly would only make things worse.
He went to the bow and stared at the silent sea swallowed by darkness, took the wheel himself, and pushed straight ahead…
…
The next day.
Yang Yi woke up after only four hours. The sense of urgency cut his sleep short.
Luckily, his body was unusual now. Good food restored his energy much faster than before, and nightmares hardly affected him anymore.
On top of that, Vitality Coconut Juice gave him a direct boost.
As for the Appetite Potion, he wouldn’t drink it again. It was too dangerous, especially for the mouth on his stomach.
He checked his status panel and saw that his energy had recovered to ninety.
He sent Suna a private message saying he was awake, then took out his fishing rod.
Fishing in the Lightless Sea was risky, as eternal night meant danger in the water.
But if he gave up fishing, he would lose his last source of supplies. Everything would have to be bought, which would be a disaster in the long run.
So despite the risk, Yang Yi decided to try.
He handed the barnacle covered fishing rod to the old captain and found a spot at the bow for himself.
He cast the line and waited.
This time took unexpectedly long. An entire hour passed before he felt something tug at the other end.
He pulled hard. Whatever was hooked wasn’t very strong.
“A bone fish?”
He saw the thing rising out of the water. A skull shaped fish head, with the rest of its body still submerged.
He hauled it out. The fish was very light and landed on the deck.
Thump, thump!
Even though it was all bone, it jumped like a normal fish. A faint soul fire flickered inside its skull.
He didn’t have to do anything. Several ancient skeletal arms moved on their own, dismantling it.
Yang Yi received its information at the same time.
【Name: Skeletal Mackerel】
【Description: A mackerel swallowed by darkness and sunk to the seafloor. Influenced by the abyss, it eventually forgot that it had died and came back to life.】
Unlike the puppets controlled by black thread maggots, this one was a genuine undead fish.
Too bad it couldn’t be used in the vending machine.
It had almost no value. Even its hunting effect was worse than the long legged sardine, only increasing ship capacity by five.
Yang Yi had the skeletal arms bring it to Suna in case it had hidden value, then continued fishing.
…
Two hours passed.
Yang Yi caught nothing, but the old captain hooked something. He reeled up an elder long legged sardine, but it was dead.
It must have still been alive when it bit the hook, but once pulled out and exposed to the darkness, it died instantly.
“So most of what we catch will probably be dead, or undead fish like the skeletal ones?” He guessed. 𝐟𝐫𝕖𝗲𝘄𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝕧𝐞𝚕.𝕔𝕠𝐦
If that was true, then fishing wasn’t as risky as he feared.
Another hour went by, and Yang Yi suddenly felt a heavy weight on his line: a big one this time, solid and unmoving.
