Chapter 683: Filthy Cultist

For Magi, spiritual energy was only used to create spell models—the model component of the spell. It was never meant to be used as the fuel for spells.

The only beings who could freely utilize spiritual energy were naturally creatures of the spirit world. However, it was nigh-impossible for the denizens of the material world to use spiritual energy so fluidly.

Now that Adam was seemingly out of mana, he had to do anything he could to survive. Therefore, as a last ditch attempt, he had to resort to using his spiritual energy.

Thanks to him possessing the white lotus, he was able to gain mastery over this energy in a very short amount of time.

The only other beings in the material world that could achieve this feat were naturally Magi who stood at the zenith of their respective schools of magic!

That is why Olin Barrett was so shocked to witness Adam wield spiritual energy so effortlessly. Furthermore, there was another reason.

Necromancers were known to deal with the souls. They would enslave others' souls and make them do their bidding. But apart from others' soul, they also placed a great emphasis on their own souls.

After all, in order to be able to control others' souls, their own souls needed to be very strong. Otherwise they would not be able to subdue the souls of others.

One way to strengthen their souls was naturally to advance in their Magus path. Every advancement increased their mana reserves as well as their spiritual energy—the force produced by thier soul.

However, there was another way a necromancer could strengthen their soul, albeit it was a very crude and dangerous method.

To devour the souls of others!

This wasn't without its drawbacks, however. The more foreign souls a necromancer devoured, the more tainted their own souls became. Moreover, there was also the risk of having their personality greatly altered.

Thus, over time, necromancers developed techniques that could deal with these drawbacks. It wasn't perfect by any chance, but it allowed them to devour others' souls with minimal effects to their own souls. However, the drawbacks remained, nonetheless.

Furthermore, there were countless mystical places, herbs, minerals, and even artifacts throughout the universe that allowed one to cleanse their soul.

So a necromancer could naturally use such resources after having devoured the souls of others.

The Cult of Bones, an organization as old as the Twilight Brotherhood, had naturally developed techniques to devour others' souls and strengthen their own.

Moreover, they also had in possession certain magical resources that allowed the Magus to cleanse their soul of impurities, albeit very slightly.

But something was still better than nothing.

So when Olin Barrett witnessed the shocking scene of Adam coating his fists with spiritual energy, he immediately realized that the youth's soul must be very strong and pure for it to be able to produce such a phenomenon.

Moreover, the youth's mastery over his spiritual energy must also be on par with his mastery over mana. Otherwise such a feat would never have been possible.

In that moment, Olin immediately decided to devour Adam's soul instead of turning him into his undead servant.

If I can devour his soul and strengthen my own, I will be able to control even more undead creatures! The possibilities are endless!

His eyes flashed with a greedy light and he couldn't avert his gaze from the ethereal energy coating Adam's fist.

"Who would have thought I'd come across such a fortuitous encounter," he said, his lips curling into a wide grin.

"Bring it on, you filthy cultist!" Adam roared, increasing the output of spiritual energy to his fists.

This caused Olin Barrett's eyes to shine brighter than before. His body involuntarily trembled in excitement as he thought of how powerful his soul would become after devouring Adam's.

He cast a series of complex hand seals and summoned even more undead, ordering them to drown Adam in a barrage of relentless suicidal attacks.

Adam continued to punch, claw, and kick his way through the horde of skeleton soldiers. After the skeleton soldiers came the zombies, and after the zombies came the wraiths.

Corpses of undead creatures lay strewn around him. His manor was now completely destroyed. However, he had caused enough commotion to draw the attention of the Councilors who were in Downtown Quarter, the nearest district to Uptown Quarter.

"Damn it…" he spoke weakly. "Just where the hell are they?"

"Let me vanquish all your hopes and dreams!" Olin spoke with a maniacal grin as he conjured his final undead creature.

Black miasma rose from the ground behind Adam. Before he knew it, a grotesque humanoid monster suddenly emerged from the miasma.

It appeared to be made up of dozens of naked human women. All the bodies had gruesomely been stitched and glued together to form a horrifying creature of dread.

Adam's heart sank when he laid eyes on this creature. "Flesh golem!"

He knew exactly what a flesh golem was capable of. Thus, without wasting another moment, he tried to escape. However, right at that moment, skeletal hands emerged from the ground, tightly latching onto his feet and pinning him to the ground.

"Damn it!" The youth cursed out loud.

However, it was too late. The flesh golem behind him bent over and embraced him in a deadly hold.

BOOOOM!!!

With a simple command from Olin, the flesh golem exploded into blood, bones, and, of course, flesh.

In the aftermath of the bloody explosion, Adam was found bloodied and bruised, his clothes completely tattered, revealing the ghastly injuries he suffered. He lay unconscious amidst the rubble.

Olin Barrett walked toward him with hurried footsteps. He knew that he didn't have much time before the Councilors of Ravenfell arrived. If the commotion from before hadn't drawn their attention yet, the explosion would certainly have.

His eyes flashed with excitement and anticipation as he crouched before the unmoving body of Adam. He viciously grabbed his head and forcefully made him sit on his knees.

Olin looked at the bloodied face of the youth and viciously mocked, "I told you, boy. You are trapped in a mortal cage. Only when you strip away the flesh are you truly free. Until then, you are full of limitations!"

His hand glowed with a deathly black light and he ruthlessly grabbed Adam's head, his fingers almost digging into his skull. Olin's eyes turned white as he utilized the Cult of Bones' secret technique.

A technique that allowed him to invade the target's spirit sea and devour their soul!

Olin Barrett slowly opened his eyes and looked around. He found himself standing on the surface of an ocean. The waterbody seemed to stretch in all directions, seemingly endless.

The skies above the ocean were a clear blue. Lazy clouds were drifting across it, and warm rays of ethereal light shone past these clouds, illuminating this mystical place.

"I was right! I was right!" Olin's expression turned euphoric as he observed the spirit sea. "The boy's soul is so pure… It's unlike anything I've ever seen. He must have consumed something extremely valuable for his soul to be so—"

His voice abruptly came to a stop when he laid eyes on a figure standing in the near distance. This figure seemed to have appeared out of nowhere, catching him by surprise.

The figure wore ethereal white robes and was standing calmly with his hands clasped behind his back. His raven hair was long and wavy like the tranquil night sky, and his eyes… they were darker than the darkest ink in existence.

Adam's lips curled up into a faint smile as met Olin Barrett's gaze. When he spoke, his words reverberated through every corner of his spirit sea, resounding like the decree of a god.

"Right where I wanted you."
