Chapter 61: High elves (4)

The reason for that was because we were all elves.

Or at least in the eyes of the normal passerby, they would think that we were all elves.

For those that knew more about elves and the difference that we had from normal elves, they would know that we were not just normal elves. All three of us were actually high elves.

"I never thought that I would meet one of my kind here. What were the two of you doing with this caravan?" I asked while they were still looking at me in a daze.

"Thank you for saving us." The feisty elf said without answering my question.

After that, she raised her hand to make the other shy elf bow her head as well.

However, I could see that the shy elf was peeking at me from time to time.

Shaking my head with a smile, I waved my hand and said, "There’s no need to thank me. I was just doing what I should do. But you still haven’t answered my questions about what you were doing here."

When she heard this, the feisty elf looked at me with a strange look.

It wasn’t just her that was looking at me like this, the shy elf also slowly looked up at me with the same look on her face.

It seemed that both of them were trying to figure out if I was being serious or not.

So I just looked at them with a calm look on my face as I waited for their answers.

After a long silence, the feisty elf asked, "Were you really not sent here to protect us by the elders? I thought that you were our guardian for this journey, which is why you helped us."

"Elders?" I asked in a confused voice.

The two elves looked at each other before turning back to say, "You really aren’t related to the Verdant Forest at all? I thought that was the reason why you weren’t scared of that woman. After all, her father was in charge of quite the large company among the humans and if she wanted to get back at you..."

She didn’t finish what she was saying, but it was clear what she was implying.

I looked at the two of them with a calm look before saying, "I really don’t know anything about any Verdant Forest. I’m a mercenary that was just passing by when I saw the two of you in this caravan. I guess you can say that I’m unlucky enough to be caught up in this bandit attack as well. My name’s Aragon."

The two elves looked at me with shocked and amazed looks on their faces.

After another long silence, the feisty elf finally said, "You really are a wandering high elf. I thought that they didn’t exist anymore..."

Once she said this, the two of them looked at me with even more amazed looks.

I couldn’t help shaking my head with a bitter smile seeing them like this.

When they saw me shake my head, the feisty elf cleared her throat before saying, "My name is Nimue and this is Rania. The two of us were found by the elders of the Verdant Forest after we were born in our elven village. Now that we’ve turned sixteen, we’ve been summoned to the Verdant Forest to start learning the ways of the high elves."

Then as if she realized that she had made a mistake, Nimue started explaining, "The Verdant Forest is a gathering of elves. It’s one of the largest gatherings of elves in the entire world, a place where many high elves gather."

She continued to explain what the Verdant Forest was and I just nodded along to show that I understood.

When she was done, it seemed like she was hesitating over something.

But it was at this time that Rania who had been silently staring at me the entire time suddenly said, "Do you want to come with us? I’m sure that the elders would be happy to see a wandering high elf like you."

It seemed that this had taken all of the courage out of her as she suddenly lowered her head again as if she was afraid of receiving an answer.

I couldn’t help revealing a smile when I saw her like this.

But I didn’t agree to her request right away.

Instead, I stroked my chin and said to myself in a mumble, "Well, it’s not as if I would mind meeting some other elves after all this time. It’s just that if I were to go with them, there’s no doubt that they would try to keep me there and I quite like the freedom that I have now."

"We’ll make sure that they let you go. Elves are all about freedom, I’m sure that the elders would never try to keep you there against your will." Nimue suddenly said this.

At the same time, Rania said, "I’ll even personally guarantee that you’ll be able to leave when the time comes."

Seeing the two of them like this, I couldn’t help shaking my head while revealing another smile.

Only I didn’t answer them right away as I just looked at them with a conflicted look in my eyes.

In the end, I said with a sigh, "Alright, I’ll come with you then. It’s not right to leave two young ladies like yourselves alone. At the very least, I should be responsible for bringing you to the Verdant Forest."

The two of them revealed looks of joy when they heard this and it seemed like Nimue couldn’t hold herself back as she jumped forward to hug me, catching me off guard.

Rania seemed to hesitate a bit, but she still did the same as Nimue.

So in the end, I had no choice but to hold the two of them in my arms.

But because of this, they didn’t notice the change in expression in my eyes.

"It seems like I was able to fool them after all."
