Hero Regresses with Villain System-Chapter 29: Anger
"How’s the supply plan coming along?"
The leader called, finally back from one of his scouting trips.
Just like Adam had figured, their best bet for survival right now was to hole up in the subway, only returning to the surface to scavenge for food. So far, he and the leader were the only ones who had traveled above ground, and they had yet to see any of those beasts.
However, one could never be too safe.
"Well, based on our scouting we should be fine for now," Adam said as he drew an imaginary map in his mind. Above the subway there was an array of abandoned restaurants, snack shops, and stuff like that.
He had assumed there would be other survivors trying to get food, but so far... neither of them had found anyone.
Continuing, Adam said, "For some reason, it seems like those beasts don’t come this way. At least, not yet. Also, I haven’t seen anyone else."
The leader nodded his agreement, as his report was basically the same.
Encouraged by this acknowledgement, Adam continued. "So basically, I think it should be safe if we start with the closest shops first. There’s a few basically right across the road. I-I probably could’ve gotten some supplies if I’m being honest."
Adam’s expression fell, because it was the truth. Up until now, none of his scouting endeavors had attracted any of those beasts or other survivors. He was almost certain that he could’ve went and gotten at least some supplies.
"Hey." The leader said as he placed a weathered but gentle hand on Adam’s shoulder.
"You did good. Don’t beat yourself up too much, ok?" At these words, Adam straightened himself a little. A soft smile crept on the leader’s face before he continued.
"If you did go out to get supplies, who knows what would’ve happened. Maybe you live and we’re all happy. But if you died? Ignoring the emotional turmoil, all the information you gained would’ve been lost at all. We were doing right sticking to the shadows, only venturing as far as needed."
The words made sense to Adam. Although he would’ve liked to have gotten Cynthia something, he was correct. If he had gotten information just for it to die with him, he would’ve put both his sister and Faye in a horrible spot.
Looking over at her, still somehow sleeping, he finally let a small smile creep on his face. Everything was going to be ok. After Adam and the leader had scouted the entire area, taking turns so the other could rest, they had a plan now.
Come tomorrow, they would have a way to get food and water. Then, they would bunker in here until the beasts got bored or dead or whatever was needed.
The leader turned to the sleeping crew, where everyone but Ryka was asleep. She simply stared into the darkness, ruffling her husband’s hair.
Turning back to Adam, the leader said, "At first light, we’ll perform our plan."
...
The plan was simple. 2 people stayed near the entrance of the subway, so that they could warn the others if any of those beasts were coming.
’Or scavengers,’ Adam thought, thinking the quiet part out loud.
There was no guarantee people would be kind. Although Adam couldn’t see people turning so evil in just the second day, he had watched enough apocalypse movies to know otherwise.
The other 4 would go in separate directions in pairs of 2, carrying large trash bags they had found. They told each other this was to ’cover more ground,’ but even the slightest bit of scrutiny showed that to be dumb.
Wouldn’t it be better to pick one place dry, so that they’d have the rest for later? It was quite obvious the real reason.
If they all went as one group and the beasts showed up...
Well, there was a reason Adam insisted Cynthia was to stay behind. He wanted to insist that Faye stayed behind as well, but couldn’t bring up the selfishness required. Besides, Faye had practically jumped at the opportunity to return to the real world, even if for a little bit.
Therefore, it was Ryka and Cynthia who stayed behind. Faye had went with Troy, and Adam the leader. It didn’t make much sense to Adam, who thought it would be better if the scouts each led a team.
However, there was apparently something the leader wanted to talk to him about. Which, now that they were clearing out a restaurant, it appeared this was the time.
They were halfway through filling their bag when he said, "Your sister. I feel awfully bad for her."
Adam turned in shock, wondering why he said that. Shouldn’t he just feel bad for everyone?
Offering a slight chuckle, Adam responded, "So, what about the rest of us? Just, go fuck ourselves?"
The leader returned a chuckle of his own before saying, "No. That’s not what I mean. It’s just..."
His voice trailed off for a second as he stared straight ahead, his expression unreadable. Growing uncomfortable from the silence, Adam shifted as he wondered what to say.
That it’s all right? He knew the leader didn’t mean that?
He didn’t know exactly what to say to alleviate the pressure. Also, it didn’t help that the sudden silence unnerved him as well.
Luckily, Adam didn’t have to respond. The leader continued his speech in a low, controlled manner.
"It’s just... kids grow up so fast. My son, he wanted to be an E-sports gamer. Heh, you believe that shit?" His eyes grew wide at the memory, seemingly still finding it incredulous.
"I should’ve just let it be. Instead... well, I said it wasn’t an actual career path. However, I probably said it too late."
"He joined the army instead. At the time, the great war hadn’t even started. Yaknow, it was supposed to be some simple recon team he joined."
The leader’s eyes closed in pain as the last bit of his revelation spilled, "Instead, he found himself in the frontlines of the first advance. The funny thing about Reapers? Those fucking robots don’t even leave behind bones."
The words struck Adam so deeply that he shut down, only able to mindlessly put cans into the bag.
However, he wasn’t completely finished. "Kid... don’t fuck up like me. Whatever it takes, whoever has to die in this world... Just let her be safe!"
The leader grabbed Adam’s body with ernest, forcing him to look up into his eyes. They were grave but filled with determination.
Just the same as Adam’s. Of course, he wasn’t going to let his sister fucking die. Of course he’d do whatever it takes to protect her.
...
"Hey, let go of me!" Cynthia screamed as a man held her back. Ryka laid beside her, knocked unconscious.
Looking through the 3 men in front of her, each armed with a modern assault rifle, Adam sent a death glare to the man holding Cynthia. At the same time he dropped his bag, Adam felt that strange adrenaline creeping up again.
The same one that let him stop the man from earlier.
"Hey, kid. That food you got there, give it to us." One of the men said to Adam, bringing up their assault rifle to aim it right at him.
Adam stood in silence, surveying them and wondering what to do. Even if he was able to stop someone 3x stronger than him with this adrenaline, guns were a whole other story. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝙚𝔀𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝒐𝒎
However, they had his fucking sister.
The man stepped forward, this time more forceful with his demand.
"Motherfucker, I said give me the food!"
Adam was about to speak when an arm reached across his chest and pushed him back. The leader was moving ahead of him? Why?
"W-we got you the food. N-now it’s time for you to hold up your end of the bargain."
’Bargain?’ Adam thought, the situation now painfully obvious to him.
The leader knew about these men. He knew to get this food for them. More than that, despite his fancy words...
’He knew my fucking sister was in danger! After that bullshit spee—’
Szzt!
In the middle of his thoughts, the leader’s brain splattered onto Adam’s shirt as Cynthia’s scream grew outrageously louder.
"Yeah, I know. You get food, we keep the girls safe and tell yall to fuck off. Well," the man laughed as he waved the gun in the air for a second before settling it on Adam, "This is me telling you to fuck off."
Shortly after saying this, the man let loose his entire barrel on Adam. He shot so many bullets that it would’ve been enough to kill someone 10 times over.
Of course, this wasn’t because he needed this many bullets for some teenager. No, the reason was much simpler.
He was a human—a greedy, evil human. This mouth breather found the most pleasure in life when he turned others into a red mist.
Unfortunately for him, it appeared Adam’s ’adrenaline’ was quite strong.
Shhng!!!
The man watched in utter horror as all of the bullets simply fell as they hit Adam. Then, his 2 comrades joined with their own fire. Once again, they did absolutely nothing to him.
Although his mind was racing a mile a minute, he knew better than to continue standing there. Instead, he ran forward and grabbed 2 of their skulls before promptly thrusting them together.
Instantly, the skulls exploded into red goo. Cynthia’s scream became far louder, but Adam didn’t have time to worry about that just yet.
First, he had to shove his hand through the last man’s heart.
"Ge-guh." The man sputtered as blood flowed out of his mouth and he took his final breath.
The deed done, Adam threw the man to the side and then turned to the one holding his sister. Tears fell from the fear stricken man as he threw Cynthia to him, pleading, "P-please le-let—"
The man was too focused on the demon in front of him that he never noticed the girl behind him until Faye slit his throat. It appeared that the convenience store they had raided had some kind of pocket knife.
As the blood flowed from the man, Adam found that he didn’t feel any remorse. Instead, all he felt was anger.
These people tried to kidnap his sister! They killed the leader...
’Who bargained with them anyway.’ Adam thought. It was painful but true. For some reason, the leader had betrayed him. He had tried to take his sister away from him.
Therefore, he wasn’t mad at his death at all.
