Hero Regresses with Villain System-Chapter 30: Anger (2)
The 5 remaining were completely shaken to their core. After all, Troy had just returned to his unconscious wife. Cynthia had just witnessed her brother and his best friend kill in cold blood.
It was a chilling, deadly reminder of what the world was becoming. That there wasn’t any more light or good. That there was simply the living and the dead.
Turning to his sister, Adam hugged her tightly as he asked, "Are you OK? They- they didn’t do anything, right?"
Shrugging, she said, "Well, they did a lot actually. That’s why they’re dead, idiot brother."
’That’s cold...’ Adam thought, but laughed all the same. If her snarky self was returning, maybe it would all be ok.
Turning to Faye, he offered a smile as he said, "Thanks."
She flashed a smile of her own before replying, "For what? You think I’d let this asshole die?"
For a moment, they forgot about the apocalypse.
Click. Click.
Then Adam heard 5 guns click from behind him.
Knowing that turning would be too slow, Adam tackled Cynthia to the ground as he reached to pull Faye as well, narrowly missing her. He screamed, "DOWN!!!" but it was too late.
Shots fired through the air. Although he could tank them just fine...
Squelch. Squelch. Squelch.
Plunk.
As he held himself over his sister, Adam heard every bullet as they tore through his best friend. Every shot was a piece of his humanity melting away, a piece of love turning to anger.
Now that the memory was reaching its climax, the wall between present and past were shattering for Adam. It was like he knew exactly what was going to happen because he was in the Temple, but also that the surprise was too much for him because he was a scared kid in an apocalypse.
However, in this land of extreme confusion there was one simple thing that was commonplace.
Anger.
Anger.
The need to kill.
Slowly rising from his sister, knowing that the assholes were reloading, Adam stood still for a moment. The he turned and glared at them.
This evil, malicious red glare was enough to strike complete fear into each of these men. After they had found the rest of their gang dead, they decided it was best to end the threat now.
Looking into Adam’s cold eyes, they knew that was impossible. That the being in front of them operated on some otherworldly energy just like the Kaiju.
As the demon ripped out their intestines, fueled by nothing more than rage, the men noted only one thing. That people were as savage, brutal, and murderous as the wildest beasts.
Within seconds, the 5 men were nothing more than a mangled mess of bones and muscle. No part of their body was identifiable, even to the most advanced computers.
Yet Faye was still dead.
"Hih... ugh..." A soft, nearly imperceptible groan attacked Adam’s sensitive ears.
Faye.
She was alive?
Turning around, he saw a bullet riddled, bloody Faye laying on top of some rocks. She was alive, her belly barely rising and falling asleep she took strained breaths.
However, soon...
"FUCK!!! FUCK!!! FUCK!!!"
Adam screamed as rage tore every part of his body and grief annihilated his soul. Watching his best friend, the one he wanted to spend forever with, die because of some asshole humans...
Throughout each lifetime, a pure rage filled Adam. A rage that shook away every other emotion, every other resolve and only left one solution.
Kill them all! Kill them all!
Everyone!!!
Everyone who made themself an enemy, everyone who made themself dangerous.
Kill them.
Every last fucking one—
"A-adam..." Faye moaned with great effort. It was evident that every breath was labored, but she held on because she had something to tell him.
Something she needed to.
Although the loss tore him apart, Adam walked forward all the same. Then, he collapsed next to her dying frame.
The truth was evident, no matter how much he wanted it to be different. She was dead. She was riddled with bullet holes, to the point that it looked as though her body was covered in red paint.
It was a miracle she was even alive. No, it was a testament to her strength.
Because, as he looked into her eyes, Adam realized he didn’t see any pain, rage, or grief. All she had was simple resolve.
Reaching to grasp his hand, her grip was feeble and yet held him fast all the same. Smiling with that bright twinkle in her eyes, she whispered, "Adam... Adam... survive. Please."
Then, that bright twinkle faded. She had said all she could.
For a while, Adam sat there cold and unmoving. As time passed, he learned what the adrenaline was.
Qi.
Ultimately, a Wasted energy. Meaningless.
What never went away, what never failed him, was the anger he felt. An anger that he had tried to push aside for Cynthia but ultimately failed to do so.
Because, everytime he did someone would try to push him down. Civilians, Exalted, Inheritors.
If they were people, he knew they were greedy. He knew that there was a very real chance they would kill what he had left.
As the vision faded, Adam found himself back in the Temple. Back in the Gentle Dark. He found himself staring into some eldritch horrors eyes.
’The wilting lady,’ he thought as his anger rose even more.
The Kaiju killed Faye just as much as people did. Same with Cynthia. Whatever the fuck this piece of shit in front of him was...
He knew it was an enemy too. He knew it wanted him to relive the deaths of his loved ones.
In the end, it just wanted to kill for its frivolous reasons. Like everything, it just wanted to kill and hurt and torture.
Therefore, Adam knew he had to kill it.
Staring into its 8 eyes, Adam said, "I don’t know what the fuck you were planning by showing me Faye’s death. All I know is... I’m going to kill you. I’m going to kill every Kaiju. I’m going to kill every human I need to. These ancient people you feed on... if I need to kill them, I will. I won’t stop killing until every single fucking thing trying to hurt my family is dead."
The 8 eyes simply continued staring at him, seemingly entirely unmoved by his anger.
No, that wasn’t the right word.
It wasn’t unmoved, but rather enticed.
As if it enjoyed this anger.
