Chapter 10: INFINITY

He landed softly on bent knees from the second floor, the tree right below cushioning the impact.

Hearing no sound, Kairos dropped the last few feet to the ground, then sprinted toward the wall where a few bricks were placed.

’Little bit more’

With the momentum, using the bricks as leverage, he jumped high towards the wall.

The jump wasn’t that high to cross the wall like that, but that was not what he was aiming for.

His hands clutched, grabbing the top of the wall. Gritting his teeth, he pulled himself up.

The other side opened up. Kairos dropped down, walked out of the alley, and blended into the crowd.

The city was still lovely and full of light despite it being almost midnight. Kairos slowly passed through the crowd and finally exited the city. From his time with Garren earlier, he already knew where to head and which path had fewer people.

The city was well protected by thick walls, but even the most impenetrable fortress has openings. Kairos arrived at another wall, one he’d noticed on his way to the blacksmith.

Beyond the wall, he could already see the endless trees. That’s his destination. The endlessly vast Hundred Thousand Mountains.

As its name implies, it consists of an unimaginable number of mountains, spread across a vast land, bordering not just one or two but four major powers. That’s how massive this place was. He wasn’t planning to go too deep into the woods.

Just deep enough for him to try out some experiments.

Kairos climbed up the wall when no one was seeing and jumped down.

Kairos immediately put up his guard. Edge or not, he knew it could be dangerous. He clutched his sword and started walking forward.

As Kairos walked cautiously, the quiet rustling of leaves beneath his boots and the soft night breeze were the only sounds around him. But of course it didn’t last long.

Suddenly, a sharp crack came from the bushes nearby.

Kairos froze. His hand tightened around the hilt of his sword.

Is it a beast? Or a monster? The chances of it being a monster aren’t high, but it’s not impossible.

A pair of glowing eyes blinked into view, followed by its actual body with dark fur.

Kairos recognized it at a glance. Also relieved... his worst-case scenario didn’t happen. It’s a beast.

Those who can manipulate mana are considered monsters, while those who still can’t are considered beasts. Beasts are also less intelligent than real monsters, who, given enough time, can learn tactics.

But still, Kairos gazed at it sternly... meeting such beasts is within his expectations, but he wasn’t planning to face one yet.

Grrr

It slowly started to step forward, saliva dropping down from its jagged mouth.

Then... it pounced on him.

But Kairos was faster.

He sidestepped, the beast soaring past him just barely missing. In the same motion, he twisted his body and thrust his sword forward.

The blade plunged deep into its neck with a wet crunch, poking out from the other side.

A choked roar came out from its throat as it landed heavily on the ground with a loud thud, twitching once, then going still.

Swing

Kairos swung his sword, removing the blood from it. Making sure it’s dead, he quickly left the place.

"Jagged wolves move in large packs... I can’t afford to get cornered by them."

Kairos pushed through the trees and emerged into a quiet clearing tucked against a massive cliff wall.

The stone wall rose high above. The clearing itself was just large enough to move freely.

’Perfect’

"This is good," he murmured. "No wind from behind, easy to watch all angles. If beasts come, I’ll hear them before they get close."

He concentrated on his mind. He could feel it, his mana running slowly within his body. The body purification he had this morning made his mana flow more smoothly.

He focused more within his heart. Mana started to pulse, gathering on his heart.

"A little bit more push."

Kairos gritted his teeth, focusing everything on the odd pulse within his chest. The mana inside him responded, coiling tighter, faster.

And then, right before him, the air twisted.

It wasn’t light. It wasn’t wind. It was space itself.

A faint shimmer expanded barely visible as the air around it warped. Reality twisted, like a tunnel being forced open, then slowly calmed down.

The space looked like warped glass. Transparent, fluttering like gentle waves. Almost like a cube where air and space bent unnaturally. He thought of pushing it to its side, it moved as he did. He thought of making it sphere, it deformed and changed into a ball, although the ball wasn’t perfect.

A smile tugged at his lips.

He’d done it.

The shape was small, smaller than expected. Maybe a sign of natural affinity. Maybe not. Either way, it didn’t matter. It was his spell zone, where magicians use their sigils!.

He could finally use magic.

He raised his hand. Red lightning essence crackled from his palm, drawn into the shifting space.

He focused. The essence began to spin, forming a vortex within it.

’So far, so good.’ He thought.

Now for the next step.

Sigil.

He closed his eyes, already memorizing the sigils he had, which were complete.

Within his mind, an image of a sigil formed.

He focused, then opened his eyes.

Mana surged out, drawn instantly into the essence. Just in front of it, a glowing pattern appeared. Before disappearing, causing the rich color of red more vibrant. It was the Sigil of Solidity.

The one from the unfinished sigil, Old man Kaelen found out. Kairos stared at it in awe.

He’d seen countless mages cast spells watched great arcs of flame and ice roar across battlefields.

But this?

This small, glowing sigil, It was his. It felt more magnificent than any of them. What mattered to him was,It was his magic!.

He could feel his mana exhausting itself at a steady rate, but that’s ok. When he finishes his zeroth circle, the mana capacity will increase by three to four times.

He focused his mind, and the calm essence started spinning. Such a motion could be done with just the first circle sigil, but now he had to do it on his own.

Threads of red lightning swirled like a spinning coil, sending small racks of lightning.

Kairos inhaled sharply, his fingers steady.

"Now."

He pushed his palm forward.

The vortex lurched, responding instantly. It shot out in a straight line, hitting right where he pointed, although it was a little off.

CRACK—!

It slammed into the tree with quite a bit of force, causing the tree to shudder. Leaving

The outer bark splintered in a circle, charred like it had been struck by a bolt of lightning.

Kairos stared.

"...It worked..."

He got closer to inspect, putting his finger on it, feeling the depth of the attack. The wood was moist from the rain, despite the impacted area still felt hot.

"So this is red lightning," Kairos mumbled.

"Let’s try the next one."

He unsheathed his sword and focused. The spell zone reappeared before him and started deforming upon his command, enveloping his sword. He imagined the sigil’s image. As for elemental essence, there’s no need for that, as it doesn’t require essence.

"Sigil of Nullification!"

Right away, within the coated spell zone, something ribbon-like started forming, warping itself on its own along the sword till the tip, leaving no space.

As soon as it finished warping on, the sigil glowed for a moment before disappearing, leaving a purple glow on the sword.

It wasn’t that bright. Still, within the night, where only the moon was the light source, it stood out a lot more than Kairos had expected.

Kairos swung it down in the air. As he did... a strange beam-like sound echoed.

Swing~

Swing~

Swing~

"Not bad. It decreased the air resistance too, making it little lighter," Kairos mumbled, giving it a last swing, then stopped injecting mana.

Right away, the purple shimmer of the sword slowly started to fade, and within a few seconds, it disappeared completely.

Kairos nodded. This would be the most useful thing, as it can easily slice apart spells and related things along with nullification attributes.

"Next, Sigil of Tether."

Upon thought, it appeared on the spellzone, but nothing happened, even after inputting mana onto it.

It was within his expectation, as it wasn’t working because it’s not in its correct environment. It basically establishes greater connection from caster to caster or artifact to artifact for greater mana flow and control.

He doesn’t know when it will come in handy. But still, it’s better to have it than not to have nothing.

Kairos sighed, clutching onto his knees. The consumption of each sigil was rather high, especially that nullification sigil, far greater than he expected.

"Hopefully the last one doesn’t require that much."

Now for the unknown one. Originally he was able to draw three sigils in total, them being complete.

One was the sigil of Nullification second was the sigil of Tether, and the last one was he had no idea about, and even Master Kaelen couldn’t figure out what it was.

Using an unknown sigil isn’t wise and has led to many incidents. But Kairos knew he had to. The quicker he understood his mana signature, the farther he would be able to grow.

With firmness... he imagined the sigil. It right away appeared on the spellzone as he did so. But as soon as his eyes fall onto it. He frowned and was also confused.

"What is this?"

"Not worthy? What does that mean... no, wait, do sigils ever contain actual words?" He uttered and looked at it.

Yes, just above the spell zone and the sigil, there were two words.

[Not worthy]

As he looked closely, he realized there was some kind of thin white essence of some kind enclosing the sigil.

Kairos looked at it for a few moments. He has never heard of such phenomen. And still thought of giving it a try.

"Here goes nothing."

He started injecting his mana. But as he was expecting, something was different for sure. It wasn’t taking any mana. That thin white layer was protecting it somehow.

Kairos frowned. He tried again... this time with elemental essence, but still the same reaction.

Then he tried injecting both the mana and esseces still nothing happened. Seeing it all, he sighed and could only give up.

Wasting time like this won’t change the things. He focused on his main goal.

After the experiment with the odd element. And how it worked, he thought of something.

"How would it actually react with magic?"

Yes, to put it in specific terms. With sigils. Sigils are things that react with elemental essence, with a variety of reactions depending on the element.

Right away the sigil of solidness appeared in the spell zone. He focused, and the purple mist reappeared.

He slowly covered the sigil with the purple mist. And took a deep breath, he was hopeful. If it works, he will defy the very logic of magic.

He tried pulling it towards him. And just as had thought, the extragrated situation happened no it far surpassed it.

Like a paperweight, the sigil itself was copied. But that wasn’t the only thing. It got copied outside his spell zone. That was the most shocking thing, as sigils can’t be sustained without a spell zone, that’s the basic knowledge of magic.

But it was already defied. But on second thought, he realized if those don’t activate, it all will be useless.

He slowly reduced the number by three, causing the mana consumption rate to decrease a little bit.

And slowly started injecting red lightning essence. The essence spread through the first one, and with his shocked gaze, it also spread evenly to the other two sigils despite them being out of the spell zone.

He calmed himself down, no he can’t get excited about what if those don’t get activated.

With another deep breath, he injected the mana in one go, spinning them was much harder as there were three. And with a sudden thought, he let them go!.

With shocking eyes, all three balls of red launched off towards the boulder. Hitting simultaneously.

Causing three small dots to appear where each of them struck. Kairos was shocked and gazed at his hands, covered by the purple mist.

He couldn’t help but rejoice. This was it! This will be the power that will help him achieve his goal.

He inspected the damage. It was clear the damage is low, considering the mana and essences he put into it. But that didn’t matter, With this power he will have the strength to protect those he needs to. Though he needs to practice a lot to master this as fast as he can.

Gazing towards the blue moon. "I see, I do have to come to the forest more than I have expected."
