Chapter 185: This Could Work

~Ambrose~

"Yeah, actually, I think I do." She felt pretty confident about her idea. Though I have no idea what it was.

"Well, go on, I don’t have all night." Artemasia could be so annoying with her sarcasm sometimes.

"Okay, listen, we know how my feeds work. She doesn’t have to touch you necessarily. Sometimes she can just be in the room and feed. And how when she feeds, she takes away pain and whatnot?"

She looked at me and then Artemasia and began again.

"Now consider my power growth. How when I fed, I made people sleep as a side effect, like I drained them, not traded with them. But now, since my inner goddess, I don’t know, awakened, my feeding is more like my mother’s. I don’t make people sleep; I make them feel peace."

That’s right, I forgot. She once made that guard faint. Onyx reminded me.

"Okay, I think I see where you’re going with this." Artemasia started pacing the room.

"Where?" I asked. I was trying to put the pieces together, but it was hard when I didn’t know what the picture looked like.

"If I learn to feed from a room and not just through touch, I can feed from Ezelreth. I can make him sleep. We can trap him and extract him, putting his soul in the stone, and then I burn the stone." She fidgeted a little with long fingernails. She looked a little more unsure than when she first started.

"I think we have the vampires acknowledge Cerberus after I end Ezelreth, I think... Maybe... It might help appease him enough... So, my goddess mother can reach him." She paused and then looked over to me.

"They were in love once, isn’t that cute? It’s like Ezelreth is my brother, and we hate each other ever since our parents’ divorce." She chuckled. Her twisted brain chuckled at that.

God damn it, I fucking love her. She was totally crazy.

"You need therapy." Artemasia rolled her eyes, turning toward her kitchen window, leaning against her sink. She stared out at the waking sun.

"If that doesn’t work, history will repeat itself. He will find his way back, he will corrupt another soul related to you, he will try and defeat the world again. But that other part about Cerberus, that’s actually pretty genius, I mean the siblings with an evil maniac part... is... a bit... much..." Artemasia cringed. I could see it from the back. I had to stifle a laugh.

"I know, I know, but I couldn’t help myself. It’s like some parent trap shit. But he’s evil... Cerberus, he’s just bitter. I felt her pain, her longing for him. He wasn’t always like this... He was once welcomed and loved, not just feared. If we can bring that back to him, make him a part of my court, our court too, maybe... things can change..." Her voice got lower almost as if she were afraid to say those words out loud, like if she did, it was doomed to fail.

"Death was once respected and longed for in certain circumstances. He was worshipped. They hoped he would help them in their next life. Mother wants him home and Ezelreth gone for good."

"I think your plan is pretty good. And you think you can do this without hurting your mother. Queen Violet?" I asked her.

"Yes, because I will put them both to sleep and extract him from her body. Leaving my mother behind. I think I can latch on to his pain and pull from that, leaving my own energy untouched." She paused and twisted her feet nervously. "I think I just need practice."

"You need practice for a lot of things. We can add soul draining to the list." Artemasia mocked. I could tell she was grouchy and tired.

"We should head back and rest. We can tell everyone else tomorrow evening." I looked at her with pleading eyes and took her hand in mine, stroking the top with my thumb.

"You’re right." She nodded. "Sorry for disturbing you."

Artemasia rolled her eyes. "It’s fine. The information was important and you needed to confirm it might work before further plotting. I get it. But now you’ve got the validation. So... Kindly... get out of my house."

Artemasia opened the door for us, and we left heading back for the palace.

People were awake and starting to do their workday.

It was like word had spread overnight; people glanced at us, more specifically Odette with awe, bowing in submission to her as we walked by.

She carried her head high and her shoulders straight. Showing no signs of the fact I marked her last night. I know the exhaustion will hit her as soon as her pretty little head hits the pillow.

"Damon, please handle my pack duties for the remainder of the day. Do not let anyone disturb us unless it’s an emergency related to Ezelreth." I spoke in channel to Damon.

"Understood, Alpha."

Take over Onyx, get Odette and me back quickly. I told my wolf.

I thought you’d never ask. Onyx took over, and I shifted.

My bones cracked and my muscles rippled as they changed, molding into a new shape.

Odette climbed up my back and sat up. My wolf form was massive compared to her small frame.

We raced home, my people bowing as I ran by. Odette was lying down, gripping my fur, holding on tight.

In minutes, we were back inside the palace. When we reached my wing, I shifted back and stood stark naked in front of her. She raised her eyebrow teasingly at me.

"Get in the room and go to bed, you pervert." I teased her.

"Ugh." She turned sharply away and stormed into the room, stopping at the door to look back at me and smile.

*CLICK*

No, she didn’t.

I approached my tall double doors, and I twisted the knob. It didn’t budge.

Yes, she did.

She locked me out. Naked.

"Odette, baby, open the door, please. I’m tired too. The bed is singing me sweet lullabies." I begged.

"Tell me I’m pretty." She yelled through the door.

"You are not just pretty; your beauty is eternal. You are my luna, my queen, my goddess. Please open the damn door."

She giggled, and the lock clicked. I swung open the door, ready to pounce on her, when I saw her curled up in our bed, her face looking cute, her eyes puffy from lack of sleep.

As much as I wanted to punish her, I know we both felt that exhaustion hit.

I grabbed the remote on my way to bed. I slid under the covers, pulling Odette flush against my chest.

I put on one of her favorite old horror movies. Godzilla, and before the movie even began, she was fast asleep.
