Chapter 29: What Now?

It was truly terrible how much limited time they had.

2 hours?

2 hours, 30 minutes?... Who knows...

It has only been 24 hours since they saw the outside world, and they were already struck by an overwhelming sense of loneliness.

It seemed like it was 10 years ago since they saw vehicles, buses and roads.

Modern life, especially having a nice warm bath and good food, was something they now dreamed of.

Sure enough, it's good to count one's blessings and be content in life, before it's too late.

Jumping from branch to branch, the group were like tree monkeys.

Despite the muted light flickering through the canopied trees, the heat was still exhausting.

Worn out and hungry, they grew even more desperate.

Some still slipped, falling and getting sucked in by the vicious tentacles below.

Some decided to stay in place, but tried to catch up later, finding themselves lost.

How come?

They didn't know it yet, but the trees were slowly moving.

It seemed that everything in this godforsaken place was trying to kill them.

Some who stayed with the Pack, continued pondering on their situation.

For how much must they keep jumping up and down like this?

Their speed has been greatly reduced because of this jumping matter.

If they were on the ground, they would have gotten farther than they did now.

Some in the group naively followed, only muttering complaints here and there.

However, Levon's mind was buzzing the more he scanned the silhouettes of those around.

'They must have the same idea as I,' He concluded.

'Book Boy Hendrix, probably spoke earlier because he too sees the benefits of traveling together.'

In other words, they needed people around them to serve as Guinea pigs.

Take a good hard look around. The land and its surroundings were unpredictable.

For survivors to make it all the way through, some sacrifices must be made.

This way, they could better understand the enemy. In this way, those who perish would be contributing to the greater good.

As he, Levon has said countless times, only fools go out in the name of righteous dying.

Since the dawn of time, the smarter Cavemen, and the even smarter Tribal leaders, have always needed people to take a hit and test things out for them.

It was cruel but necessary and effective.

A few calculative minds thought so.

As for the oblivious ones, they hadn't even grasped how dangerous their so-called teammates were.

From the first test to now, they survived by following various groups.

They have always been sheep, so how could they know that the true danger around them was the human heart?

Soon, one of the obvious ones yelled excitedly, when seeing dry land ahead.

"Look! Look! We can finally get off the trees!"

"No more mushy Tentacle land. DRY LAND!"

"Really? Good."

Some were smart enough to first throw branches on the ground before jumping down gleefully.

'Nothing's happening.'

Levon and the others waited for a few while before jumping down too.

See? Guinea pigs...

It's best they all stayed in one big group, so they could keep using these lab rats as they could.

.

.

Thup~

Levon was back on the ground, picking up his pace alongside the crowd.

'We've lost quite a lot more again.'

Their numbers keep dwindling down.

Like so, the group ran collectively for 17 minutes without rest.

Rest? Who can rest when they have a ticking deadline to uphold?

Observing their surroundings, they now found themselves in a forest with trees roughly as tall as they were.

What a big change.

They moved aggressively as one, amid the short trees, that seemed to—

"Hey, is it just me, or are the tree heights growing shorter and shorter the more we advance?"

Everyone nodded.

Now, the trees were shoulder length, with their bushes practically blocking their view.

Dammit. They kept pushing these branches and leaves away, in firm determination to stay united.

Suddenly, they felt something!

Levon stared ahead, feeling a strangling pressure on his throat—Stampede!

Brm-Boom-Boom-Boom-Boom~

The tremors were insane.

Who the hell cares? It's a stampede!"

"What? Stampede?"

"Oh no, there aren't any tall trees to climb on!"

"What about rocks? Anyone seen any risks?"

"My face! My pretty face! What should I do if I get disfigured?"

The crowd of youths felt icy dread slither through their bodies the heavier and louder the rumbling and vibrations grew.

Then they saw it.

They saw thousands of multicolored wild boars fleeing their way, and almost collapsed.

Are you kidding them?

They've never seen such enormous wild boars before, even on TV.

"Wiping Ass!" Someone exclaimed in frustration. "Are you sure they're not an alien species?"

Good question.

At this point, they were beginning to doubt if they were still on the same planet at all.

Among the onlookers, Artilla's eyes changed when staring at the incoming herd.

Right now in her eyes, these wild boars all looked like well cooked packs of meat running around on bone sticks.

Afraid?

Artilla was more concerned with her rumbling belly, wondering if she will be allowed to eat as much as she likes after the test.

Artilla Ferra—a stunning, quiet and long-haired girl with an Icy exterior, was also a big FOODIE.

She stood there in ancient traditional garments, her black fan always in her hand, whether it was opened or not.

To eat or not, that was the question!

.

.

Rumble, Rumble~

The sounds of a thousand hooves and destruction was all they could hear.

All everyone could see were countless short trees flying weightless into the air behind the stampede.

What to do?

Levon and Shugo, for the first time, show signs of unrest.

The other tests, although challenging, didn't make them nervous.

"Buddy, it seems Mother Nature has made our plans for us."

It seems the only thing to do now was to: RUN!
