Immortality Starts From Making Money.-Chapter 358: The Strange Peace in the Slum
It had been two weeks since Mo Jian met with the two gang leaders. To the people of the lower district, however, it felt like an eternity. ๐ฏ๐ป๐ฎ๐๐ฌ๐ฎ๐๐๐ค๐๐๐ก.๐๐๐ถ
The usual brawl between the two gangs had miraculously stopped.
This had never happened before.
Even when powerful clans mediated their prolonged battles, the peace merely lasted a week. But now...
Two weeks without fighting.
Is the world coming to an end?
People who lived in the district moved as if they were walking on broken glass. The gang silence terrified them more than their normal battles.
At least if they had continued to kill themselves, they wouldnโt have time to focus on them.
But now...
Rumors spread in the slums.
Invisible tension hung in the air. At night, people locked their doors and slept with one eye open.
Everyone was expecting the faรงade to end and the slum to be thrown into deadly life-and-death battle.
Yet, that never happened.
But then they noticed something.
The two gangs were recruiting strong boys with good physiques. More importantly, they were not treated badly and were not used for their illegal dealings.
Puzzled.
Some of the brave, once they got closer to the boys, found out what was happening.
It was then they learned the two gangs were preparing for a brand-new game that might change the slum forever.
"Is that true?"
"What new game? I donโt believe it!"
"These are all ruses to get us to lower our guard. Iโll eat the table if this is not a ruse."
In a narrow alley, some slum dwellers gathered in twos and threes, discussing the latest news from the gangs.
"I think it is true. My cousin was selected, and he has been training very hard," a woman covered in dirt spoke.
"Donโt believe anything the gang says or shows. There is a deeper plan behind everything," an old man with wrinkled face muttered.
"Whether it is true or not, we shall know very soon."
And indeed, the day came sooner than expected.
Three days later, members of the two gangs patrolled their territory, but instead of the protection fees they normally collected, they did something no one expected.
"Our gang is having a football match with the Blood River Gang in two weeks. Everyone must be present in the old arena."
"If you come, the gang will waive two months of your protection fees." The gang representative shouted.
"Is this true?" a young boy asked with wide eyes.
"Boy, do you think I will lie to you?" the gang representative asked, a smile that wasnโt a lie softening his features. "Just come and witness. This is a chance to change our lives."
With that, he proceeded to the next street.
The sudden announcement shocked everyone. Many who thought the training was a ruse could not believe their ears.
In Blood River territory, the same thing happened. Many slow dwellers found it hard to believe, but the truth was right before them.
Just to watch a strange match, two months of protection-free would be waived. When did the gangs become so generous?
Even though many were still skeptical, this was a good thing, and many began to grow curious about this football game.
While the lower district was still the bottom level of the city, some people still paid attention to it. Some of their major sources of living were entwined with them.
Inside the famous Wolf Skull Gang headquarters, the boss listened to the drastic changes in the lower district with a knitted expression.
"When did this start?" he asked in a low voice.
Even though he did not exude overt power, his presence was intimidating. His broad shoulders and firm muscles bulged under his robe, radiating strength.
"My lord, it started about a week ago," the middle-aged man standing before him responded with a slight trembling in his voice.
The Wolf Skull Gang leader furrowed his brow. This had been going on for over a week, and he was only learning of it now.
Although their gang did not have control over the smaller gangs, that territory still belonged to them. Each month, they paid tribute.
This was the main reason why the smaller gangs in the lower rung could exist upon their illegal activities and weak strength.
"Tell me everything from the beginning," he demanded.
Quickly, the man explained everything without hiding it. How Mo Jian convinced the two gangs to participate in a strange game and the promise of a better future lay bare before the Gang Leader.
Listening to everything, the Gang Leader did not speak for a moment.
"A protector with a Half-Step Nascent Soul Cultivation?"
Even though Half-Step Nascent Soul cultivation was nothing in the city, it was not something any ordinary person could produce.
Besides, who says the force behind them only had Half-Step Nascent Soul cultivators?
"Find me everything about this new force and where the strange game is going to take place." He commanded.
"Yes, my lord."
Unknown to the Wolf Skull Gang leader, he was not the only one keeping tabs on the new power that dared to disrupt the turbulent peace of the lower district.
The two other powerful gangs had also caught wind of this and had already begun to move in the shadows.
Inside the old arena, decades of abandonment had long since been washed away. Everything had been renovated, rebuilt from the ground up.
The arena had been primarily used for survival battles with beasts in the past before it became obsolete. But now, it had been turned into a modern stadium.
Mo Jian and Elder Bai walked side by side, inspecting the newly renovated arena.
Looking down at the previous dirty battlefield now covered in green grass, he nodded, pleased with everything.
"Are all the formations in place?" he asked.
"Yes, everything is in place," Elder Bai responded.
They moved from one small hall to another. The seats and tables were neat and sophisticated enough to capture everyoneโs attention.
They moved to the VIP section; the seats were made from expensive leather. The curtains were from expensive silks.
Smelling the air, it was pure and fresh.
Sweet fragrance hung in the air.
Everything was pleasing to the eyes and nose.
"I believe weโre now ready for the first football game on this continent," Mo Jian whispered, his eyes flashing with anticipation.
