Chapter 59: Shelter in the Storm

But then the sight became real and the anxious storm inside his heart finally calmed.

He had even survived a mudslide.

That meant he was clever and strong enough to protect himself.

This man, though born into nobility, was like a wild plant that had weathered countless storms.

He’s tough, resilient, and full of life.

So different from the delicate flowers raised in royal gardens, hidden from wind and rain.

Yue Mingxuan rushed through the curtain of rain and saw Shang Qinghua standing there, drenched and pale.

His heart filled with warmth and before he could think, he ran straight into Shang Qinghua’s arms and holding him tightly around the waist.

And there, in the endless downpour, Shang Qinghua finally found Yue Mingxuan.

For the first time, Yue Mingxuan let down all his walls and felt a sense of belonging in this unfamiliar world.

"Shang Qinghua," Yue Mingxuan said while stepping back slightly. His eyes were full of tears as he looked at the man before him whose has been soaked to the bone. "Don’t you know you have cold poison in your body? You can’t be out in the rain like this. Now it’s seeped into your bones, even the best doctor alive couldn’t save you."

Seeing that Yue Mingxuan was unharmed, Shang Qinghua finally let out a breath he hadn’t realized he’d been holding.

The tension in his chest eased as he asked quietly, "You’re not hurt, are you?"

Yue Mingxuan could hear the concern hidden in his rough voice.

He also saw that Shang Qinghua was trembling, his skin pale, and his body unnaturally cold.

It’s clear signs that the cold poison was acting up.

Yue Mingxuan shifted his arms gently a d turning the embrace into a steady hold to support him.

"I found a cave nearby to take shelter," he said softly. "Let’s wait there until the rain stops before we go down the mountain."

Shang Qinghua didn’t say anything.

He simply pulled Yue Mingxuan a little closer and let most of his body’s weight rest against him.

He was exhausted, truly exhausted.

The cold poison that he had been holding down inside was starting to stir again, like a beast about to break free and devour him from within.

With Yue Mingxuan leading the way, the two of them quickly returned to the same cave where he had taken shelter from the rain earlier.

Just as Yue Mingxuan had done before, Shang Qinghua carefully studied the place, his sharp eyes scanning every corner.

His experience surviving in the wild was far greater than Yue Mingxuan’s.

Under his direction, Yue Mingxuan soon found a pile of dry firewood stacked in the corner.

They started a small fire and the warm glow quickly filled the cave, driving away the damp chill.

"If you hadn’t come, I would’ve been fine," Yue Mingxuan said quietly while crouching beside the fire and poking at it with a stick. "I could have found the cave and waited for the rain to stop."

He hadn’t expected Shang Qinghua to actually come looking for him.

The thought made his chest feel warm, though he didn’t know how to express it.

Shang Qinghua gave him a glance but said nothing.

His look, however, clearly carried a silent message something that could only be read as ’You just got lucky.’

Yue Mingxuan felt a bit irritated by that look.

"The only reason no one found this cave before is because those vines covered the entrance," he muttered defensively. "Besides, I already checked the place. The stone benches are roughly made. It’s just a simple shelter, a spot for travelers to rest when it rains."

Shang Qinghua didn’t argue.

He thought for a moment, remembering that the intelligence he had gathered never mentioned any hidden caves behind the Changle Palace.

It seemed this cave wasn’t important to the royal family. It’s just an ordinary, forgotten place.

After hanging their soaked outer robes on the rocks near the fire to dry, Yue Mingxuan stretched his hands toward the warmth and glanced at him carefully.

"Prince Shang," he asked softly, "why did you come looking for me in such heavy rain?"

He wanted to sound calm, but a small spark of happiness still glowed in his chest.

Yet before he could hold onto that feeling, Shang Qinghua’s answer hit him like a bucket of cold water.

"You took my priceless herbs," Shang Qinghua said flatly.

Yue Mingxuan froze, his face falling.

All the faint warmth and soft thoughts from a moment ago disappeared instantly.

He stared at Shang Qinghua, half angry, half speechless. So this is why he came?

He let out a quiet, bitter sigh.

So even the great Prince Shang is this stingy.

For a few herbs, he’d braved a storm, climbed a mountain, and risked his health?

If the noble women and men of the Four Kingdoms knew that their beloved Prince Shang and the man of their dreams was this stingy, their hearts would probably shatter so hard that even a year of sweeping wouldn’t clean up the pieces.

Men, Yue Mingxuan thought to himself, having a handsome face means nothing if the heart behind it is small.

Shang Qinghua might be rich enough to rival a nation, but if he was going to run up a mountain in a thunderstorm just to chase after a few plants, that was beyond ridiculous.

Hearing Yue Mingxuan’s grumbling tone, Shang Qinghua didn’t respond.

He simply sat down by the fire while closing his eyes slightly and began to focus on calming his inner energy.

He tried to summon his remaining strength to suppress the cold poison again before it could fully erupt.

After the cold poison inside his body was finally suppressed for the moment, Shang Qinghua let out a long, steady breath.

He had clearly noticed the flicker of disappointment that flashed in Yue Mingxuan’s eyes earlier.

If it had been Rong Tieshan who said those same words, Yue Mingxuan probably wouldn’t have shown that expression would he?

He didn’t know why, but such a strange thought suddenly appeared in his mind.
