Chapter 217: Darkness’s Breath ( 217 )

The last demon took a step back, breath ragged, eyes wide with wariness.

His hand reached behind his cloak and slowly drew out a massive, jagged scythe, metal glinting menacingly under the moonlight. Glowing red runes inscribed along its blade pulsed like a beating heart, veins of fiery light flowing through its cracks.

An instrument designed to instill fear.

Hazuki blinked slowly, observing.

Then tilted his head, a bemused expression on his face.

"...Whoa, Ridan. Is he gonna farm?"

He shifted slightly, squinting at the weapon.

"Wait, no. You don’t use that kind of scythe for rice, right? Too heavy."

He tapped his chin thoughtfully with the flat of his sword.

"Ohhh! I get it. He’s here to cut weeds."

Ridan hovered nearby, stifling a laugh.

"Yeah... but there’s no weeds here, is there?"

"Exactly!" Hazuki nodded as if solving a riddle. "Maybe he got lost? Took a wrong turn at the farm? Or his map’s upside down?"

The demon’s left eye twitched violently, veins bulging.

His knuckles clenched tighter around the scythe.

"Is this human... crazy? Or just... stupid?" he growled, frustration mixing with fury.

Hazuki just kept smiling, relaxed and unreadable.

"Oi, Ridan. Think if I ask nicely, he’ll let me borrow that? Might use it if we plant radishes later."

Ridan shrugged in midair, smirking.

"Try it. Maybe he’ll cry."

The demon roared, raising the scythe high.

But Hazuki had already lifted his sword, lazily and silently, a dangerous grin spreading across his face, calm, cold, and deadly.

The demon’s grip tightened further.

Hazuki’s voice dropped, low and teasing.

"So, farmer-san... ready to get plowed?"

"You’re the one I’ll plow!!" the demon roared, fury boiling over as he slammed his palm into the ground.

A surge of dark mana erupted violently from behind him.

Shadows swirled and coalesced, two grotesque monsters materialized, stitched with runes and writhing with unnatural aura. Their bodies resembled twisted, melted muscles, canine in shape but far more horrifying.

"Kill that lowly human!!" the demon bellowed.

The creatures charged, snarling and claws tearing through the night.

Hazuki...

Yawned.

Then, grinned.

But this wasn’t his usual smug, carefree expression.

This was colder, calmer. A look that seemed to weigh down the very air around him.

And suddenly.

His aura shifted.

It was like flipping a switch.

The wind stilled.

Even the night seemed to hold its breath.

The demon flinched, eyes wide.

"W-what...?"

Hazuki took a slow step forward.

His left hand lifted, palm facing up, fingers relaxed, as if casually clutching something invisible.

The space around him warped, subtly rippling. His eyes flickered with a deep emerald glow, streaked with ancient, obscure power.

The demon’s eyes widened further.

A crushing presence pressed down, spiritual weight so heavy, the trees shuddered and bowed.

Hazuki’s fingers curled.

CRACK.

The summoned monsters froze mid-leap.

Then, imploded, disintegrated into nothingness.

Bodies compressed and shattered by an invisible force, spines cracking, jaws snapping shut. Moments later, they fell lifeless on the ground, twitching once before stillness claimed them.

Gone.

Without a spell.

Without a gesture.

Just a simple grip.

The demon staggered, trembling, his scythe quivering.

Hazuki slowly tilted his head, calm and composed.

From within his body, Ridan’s voice echoed through their shared connection.

"Don’t worry. We’ll deal with you next. Personally."

Panic clawed at the demon’s mind, tightening its grip.

His feet pounded the earth in frantic, desperate bursts, smoke billowing behind him as he tore through the woods at full tilt.

Lungs burning, heart pounding like thunder, thoughts spiraling in chaos.

Who the hell is that human!? Why is he this strong!? Was he the one who stopped all the rifts!?

No...that couldn’t be.

The report said the heroes from the Human Kingdom were all women.Five of them. I saw the report myself!

His teeth clenched, legs pushing harder, desperation fueling his sprint.

I need to report this, put this monster down before he wrecks everything!

Suddenly, a voice...calm, mocking, right beside his ear.

"Why are you running?"

His blood ran cold.

His legs nearly failed, mid-stride.

He snapped his head to the side.

There was Hazuki....walking casually, right beside him, talking as if they were out for a stroll.

One hand in his pocket. The other swinging his green, faintly glowing sword over his shoulders, relaxed.

Smiling.

Not exhausted. Not panting.

Just... enjoying the run.

"You running from something scary? Oh wait. That’s me, isn’t it?" Hazuki tilted his head, maintaining perfect pace. "Man, I was just asking for directions. But you’re so rude."

The demon’s mind spun with terror and confusion.

What the hell is this guy!?

He poured every ounce of mana into his legs, casting speed enchantments as he sprinted, trying to escape.

Hazuki sighed again.

"This is boring now."

And suddenly...vanished.

In the blink of an eye, he reappeared. Standing directly in front of the demon.

The demon froze mid-stride, body paralyzed as if time itself had stopped.

His eyes darted wildly, a frantic flood of terror and confusion.

Before him, Hazuki raised his hand, palm outward, fingers moving with slow, deliberate precision. An unseen thread controlling reality itself.

This wasn’t mere magic; it was command...deep, precise, insidious. Subjugating even the laws of motion.

Hazuki’s grin spread wider.

But then, a different voice broke through the silence.

"You know... demons really shouldn’t attack towns. Or any place, really."

He stepped forward, each step deliberate. His boots sank into the earth as if he owned the very ground.

"Did you forget about the peace pact?" he asked, voice gentle but firm. "The one made over a thousand years ago? Hmm?"

The demon’s eyes shook, sweat beading on his brow.

Hazuki’s smile stretched into a faint, chilling curve.

"Well... since you and your friends decided to tear open rifts, summon beasts, and cause chaos..."

He tilted his head, eyes cold.

"You’ve officially voided the terms."

Slowly, Hazuki curled his fingers into a loose fist.

"So..."

He whispered softly, finality in his tone.

"Goodbye."

The demon’s eyes widened in horror.

Then, his body was crushed inward , pulled by unseen forces, folding into itself like crumpled paper caught in a vortex.

And then—nothing.

No sound.

No trace.

Only dust drifting in the quiet air, the faint shimmer of dissipating magic lingering like a ghostly echo.

Hazuki exhaled long, stretching his arms.

"Ughhh... Ridan... let’s go home. My hangover’s still killing me."

Ridan floated beside him, chuckling softly as they vanished into the shadows of the forest.
