Chapter 73: Desperate Measures ( 73 )

Hazuki trudged along the dusty road, his throat dry and parched.

"Damn... I need water." He smacked his lips, already imagining the cool, refreshing taste of a stream.

His eyes scanned the surroundings, hoping to spot a river, a pond—hell, even a puddle would do at this point.

Nothing.

Only grass, dirt, and disappointment.

"Ugh... this sucks." He wiped the sweat from his forehead and let out a groan.

Suddenly, his stomach growled.

Loudly.

Hazuki froze.

"...Oh, come on."

As if thirst wasn’t enough, hunger was joining the party.

"If only I could find some food..." He muttered, placing a hand over his stomach as if that would somehow silence the protest.

He glanced at the surrounding grass.

"...Nope. Not eating that."

Continuing along the endless road, his exhaustion reached dangerous levels. His throat felt like sandpaper, his stomach was empty, and the sun was mercilessly roasting him alive.

"Damn it...! Too thirsty..."

Spotting a large tree ahead, he stumbled over and collapsed beneath its shade.

Leaning against the rough bark, he exhaled loudly.

"I swear... if I don’t find water soon, I’m gonna dry up like an old man."

As he sat there, trying not to pass out, a brilliant idea suddenly struck him.

"Wait... my skill!"

He perked up, grabbing his sword.

"Elemental Control! If I can control water, then..."

Hazuki closed his eyes, gripping the hilt tightly.

Focus hazuki...

Imagine water...

Cool, refreshing water flowing through the air...

He felt something. His sword pulsed in response, mana gathering around it.

Hazuki’s heart raced.

It’s working!

Excited, he opened his eyes—

"EEEEKKK!!!"

His sword wasn’t glowing blue.

It was on fire.

"I DON’T WANT FIRE!!! I WANT WATER, DAMN IT!!!"

Panicked, he flailed his burning sword around, nearly setting the tree ablaze.

"AHHHHH!!!!!"

Frantically, he stabbed the ground, trying to smother the flames.

Hazuki gritted his teeth, gripping his sword tightly.

"Damn it... Focus, Hazuki! Water! WATER!!"

He closed his eyes again, channeling every ounce of concentration into imagining cool, crystal-clear water.

His mana responded.

The heat from his blade vanished.

A gentle blue glow pulsed along the sword’s edge.

Hazuki’s eyes shot open.

"OH!!! IT’S WORKING!!!"

Excited, he tilted the blade, watching as a thin stream of liquid flowed down the metal surface. Without hesitation, he cupped his hands, gathered the precious liquid, and took a big gulp.

BLERRGHH!!

Hazuki immediately spat it out, coughing violently.

"WHAT THE HELL IS THIS?!"

His tongue felt numb, and his throat tingled in the worst way possible.

Staring at his sword in horror, he noticed the once-clear water had a slight murky tint.

Sniffing it, his face twisted.

"Why does this smell like... rust?!"

Realization hit him like a runaway carriage.

"DID I JUST DRINK SWORD WATER?!" freeωebnovēl.c૦m

Hazuki gagged.

"Uuueeeggghhh!!!"

Frantically, he wiped his tongue on his sleeve, spitting repeatedly onto the ground.

"I WANTED WATER, NOT METAL JUICE!!!"

"Ugh... whatever." Hazuki wiped his mouth with his sleeve, his face twisted in disgust.

"This’ll do... I guess. At least I won’t die of dehydration."

He glared at his sword, still dripping with that questionable liquid. With a deep sigh, he forced himself to drink more.

Gulp. Gulp. BLERRGHH.

Gulp. Gulp. BLERRGHH.

Each sip was a battle between survival and common sense.

"Damn it! This tastes like a foot bath!"

But despite the horrific aftertaste, his thirst finally faded.

Hazuki sighed, rubbing his stomach.

"Well... at least I’m not thirsty anymore."

Standing up, he brushed the dust off his clothes and stretched.

"Alright... let’s keep moving."

He took one last look at his sword.

"...You and I need to have a serious talk after this."

.....

"Oh well.it’s not like sword can talk.If this sword can talk..for sure it’s scary, more like creepy."

With that, he continued his journey down the endless road.

Meanwhile, in a certain noble house...

"WHAT!?"

A furious nobleman slammed his hand against the desk, his face red with rage.

"The princess has returned to the kingdom, and yet none of them were able to capture her!?" His voice echoed through the chamber, frustration barely contained.

A nervous servant bowed deeply, choosing his words carefully.

"My lord... the assassin team we sent—"

"The so-called ’elite’ group that cost me a fortune?!"

The servant gulped.

"Y-Yes, my lord... They were captured by the town guards in Yumia."

The noble’s eye twitched, veins pulsing in his forehead from fury.

"Damn those worthless bastards! They claimed they were the best! ’Unrivaled in kidnapping and assassinations,’ they said! Hah!"

With a violent sweep of his arm, documents, maps, and an expensive gold-plated goblet crashed to the floor.

"A complete waste of my time! A waste of my money!"

Despite the chaos, his butler remained eerily calm. He adjusted his white gloves before clearing his throat.

"My lord."

"WHAT!?"

The butler did not flinch. Instead, he continued in a calculated tone.

"According to our inside sources... it appears that the princess is already engaged."

The noble’s rage halted for a brief moment.

"Hah!? Engagement? That means nothing! That girl can still be mine!"

The butler gave a slow, knowing nod.

"Normally, yes, my lord. However... this time, it is not a standard engagement."

A flicker of curiosity replaced the noble’s fury.

"...What do you mean?"

The butler exhaled, his expression unreadable.

"It is a pinky promise, my lord."

Silence enveloped the room. The noble’s confident smirk vanished instantly. The air turned heavy.

"Shit! Shit! Shit!!"

The noble paced back and forth, hands clenched into fists, his expression twisted with rage. His breath came in sharp, furious huffs, mind racing to find a way to fix this absolute disaster.

Across the room, the butler stood composed, watching his master’s tantrum with the patience of one who had witnessed far worse.

The noble slammed his fist onto the desk, rattling the fine porcelain teacup set beside him.

"She should be mine!" he growled through gritted teeth.

The butler adjusted his cufflinks, smirking slightly.

"My lord."

"What!?" the noble snapped, bloodshot eyes glaring at his ever-calm servant.

The butler’s voice remained steady, almost amused.

"A pinky promise oath... cannot be broken."

The noble’s nostrils flared. "I KNOW THAT!"

"However..." The butler’s eyes gleamed with knowing confidence.

The noble froze.

"...what?"

"It can be ended... if one of them dies."

The noble scoffed. "No way I’m killing the princess! She’s too precious, You know her power was rare. And that girl should be mine! MINE!!"

The butler chuckled softly.

"Ah, my lord..." His voice dropped to a whisper, smirk widening.

"Not her... the man."

The room fell into complete silence.

The noble’s frustration melted away, replaced with a slow, dawning realization. His lips curled into a wicked grin.

"Oh."
