Chapter 42: 42: No Immunity - Part 2

The twins slowly regained consciousness, their heads pounding as they tried to piece together what had happened.

They were lying on the cold ground in a secluded alley, their bodies still heavy from the magic they had used earlier.

The familiar tension that came with their dangerous work had dissolved into confusion, and they were left with a sense of disorientation.

"Ugh, what...?"

Aiden groaned as he sat up, rubbing his forehead. His senses were still fuzzy, and for a moment, he couldn’t even remember how they had ended up on the ground.

He glanced over at his sister, who was slowly stirring next to him.

"Leglois... What happened?"

Aiden’s voice had a trace of panic. He had never been knocked out like this, and he was unsure if the magic they had been fighting against was too much to handle.

"I... I don’t know."

Leglois muttered, blinking and looking around in confusion.

She could feel the lingering effects of the medicine coursing through her body, but there was no sign of the person they had been following.

Instead, they both froze as they noticed Liam lying unconscious just a few feet away from them.

Liam was on the ground, his face pale, and his limbs unnaturally still. His legs were sprawled awkwardly, and a dart—one they both recognized—was lodged in his leg.

He had been struck by the same dart that had incapacitated them earlier, but it didn’t make sense. How had they missed him? How had he been knocked out without them noticing?

"What the hell happened?"

Leglois muttered under her breath, her mind racing to understand the situation. She glanced at Aiden, but he appeared just as confused as she was.

Suddenly, both of their phones buzzed at the same time. Leglois checked her screen, and a strange message appeared:

[Have you secured the target?]

The message was cryptic, and neither twin understood its meaning.

Their mission had always been clear: follow Liam and gather information, but this message was out of place. It didn’t make sense, and neither of them had received anything like this before.

"What does this even mean? The target? Who are they talking about?"

Aiden questioned, his brows furrowed as he looked at his sister.

Leglois shook her head, still trying to process the situation. She crouched down next to Liam, her instincts kicking in.

"We need to take him with us. If this is part of the mission, we need to follow through."

Aiden nodded in agreement. Despite the confusion, their orders were always clear, even if the details weren’t. They had a job to do, and this man—Liam—was somehow part of it.

"We take him in, then figure out what’s going on. But we have to be careful. If he’s tied to Aria Duskwood, things could get messy."

Aiden muttered, casting a suspicious glance at the unconscious Liam.

Leglois reached into her bag, pulling out a pair of handcuffs. She snapped them around Liam’s wrists with practiced efficiency. It was strange, taking him captive like this, but something told her that the situation was not as simple as it seemed.

"Let’s move. We’ll figure it out once we’re back at base"

Leglois said, her voice cool and calculating.

With their target secured, the twins lifted Liam’s limp body between them and began heading toward their vehicle. Despite the lingering confusion, they knew one thing for sure: things were about to get much more complicated.

"Hey, old man! Any news about Liam? He’s usually back by this time. Should I head out to bring him back?"

Asger looked at the night sky with a frown on his face. The moon was high up in the sky, making the night look beautiful.

Yet, despite this beauty illuminating the night, no one in the household could enjoy it. Their worries consumed them and made them hyper-alert.

The only one who did not seem as worried was Elder Eryndorius Valtessar. He continued to read his book, ignoring the bickering dragon. He was able to ignore it all the way until the dragon decided that he had had enough and lit his hand on fire.

Sigh

"I don’t think we should interfere in an adult’s nightlife. I’m sure Liam is fine and will be back soon."

The elder confirmed. But even he was beginning to sound uncertain with each passing second. His words did little to comfort Asger, but at least it was a start.

And then, the door to the main house was banged open, and Bianca entered with a shocked look on her face.

Bianca’s eyes were wide with concern as she stepped inside.

"I was doing some fortune telling when I noticed something troubling in Liam’s future. His fortune... it’s not good," she said, her voice tinged with unease.

The words hit Asger like a ton of bricks. He had been trying to stay calm, but now the knot in his stomach tightened.

"What do you mean, Bianca? What did you see?"

Bianca hesitated for a moment before speaking.

"I couldn’t see the exact details, but something dark and dangerous is following him. It feels... threatening. I just knew I had to come down here and warn you."

Her words sent a chill through the room. Asger’s worry escalated, his usual bravado slipping away. Elder Eryndorius Valtessar’s expression grew darker, too, his book lowering slightly as he took in Bianca’s revelation.

"I thought it was just a feeling, but it felt like a warning. I just had to tell you."

Bianca continued and before Elder Elias could process the information, Asger was already moving. His boots thudded against the floor as he rushed toward the door, throwing a glance back at the elder. "I’m going. Liam’s in trouble, and I can’t sit here any longer."

Elder Elias didn’t say anything, but his eyes narrowed in thought. He was not one to rush into action without a plan. However, Asger’s determination left him no room for argument. The dragon had already made up his mind.

With that, Asger was out the door and into the night, leaving Bianca and Elder Elias behind, both of them caught in their own growing concern.
