Chapter 71: 71: The gaurd’s mood-swings- Part 2

The guard’s tone changed for a second time, and became polite. Liam felt amused to see these changes happening so quickly and right in front of his eyes.

His request to be shown a room was responded to by the guard this time.

"Of course, Mr. Liam."

The guard hurried to comply, leading them through a different corridor and opening a set of polished mahogany doors to reveal an extravagant resting chamber.

Plush couches, a faintly glowing fireplace, and even a small table set with refreshments adorned the space.

Asger wasted no time flopping onto the largest couch, stretching out comfortably.

"Mmm... comfy. You’re alright, Liam. I’m taking a nap. Wake me up if you need my help."

Asger was finally out and Liam breathed a sigh of relief. With this, at least one problem had been dealt with.

Liam smirked before stepping back into the hallway. Just as he turned to address the guard again, the man’s expression shifted.

"If I may ask... what level are you as a magician?"

Liam’s lips twitched slightly before he answered.

"I’m a Warden."

The guard’s entire demeanor flipped in an instant. His carefully controlled politeness shattered, replaced by open contempt.

"You’ve got to be kidding me. A damn Warden? You mean to tell me you don’t even have magic? Then why the hell are you even here?"

He scoffed, crossing his arms.

Liam’s patience snapped.

"If I don’t belong here, then why did I get an invitation? If someone like Victor Remington finds me valuable enough, who are you to question it?"

The guard sneered.

"Tch. Connections can only take a magicless nobody so far. You’ll see soon enough that you don’t belong—"

"Well, well! What a delightful surprise!"

A new voice rang out, echoing through the corridor.

The guard paled instantly and turned to face the approaching figure.

Liam followed suit, his eyes landing on an elderly man in a deep blue robe adorned with golden embroidery. His long, silver hair cascaded down his back, and his piercing emerald eyes sparkled with recognition as they landed on Liam.

"Liam! My dear boy, what an unexpected pleasure to see you here!"

Elder Eryndorius exclaimed with genuine enthusiasm, his aged face lighting up with warmth.

The guard visibly stiffened, his sneering expression replaced by one of outright horror.

"E-Elder Eryndorius! I—uh—I didn’t realize—"

The old mage raised an amused eyebrow.

"Didn’t realize what? That you were insulting a guest in my presence?"

His tone remained light, but there was an undeniable steel beneath it.

Liam crossed his arms and smirked as the guard took a half-step back, looking for an escape. "Elder, I—uh—of course, I didn’t mean—"

"Enough. I’m sure you have... urgent business elsewhere, do you not?"

Eryndorius waved a hand dismissively.

The guard swallowed hard and bowed stiffly.

"O-Of course! Pardon me, Elder Eryndorius. I’ll take my leave now!" Without waiting for another word, he turned on his heel and all but fled down the corridor.

Liam watched him go before turning back to the Elder with mild amusement.

"I don’t suppose I need to worry about him causing more trouble for me later?"

Eryndorius chuckled.

"Oh, I doubt he’d dare. You’ll find that my presence carries a certain... deterrent effect on small-minded fools."

Liam nodded.

"I appreciate that."

The elder clasped his hands behind his back, examining Liam with a knowing gaze.

"So, tell me, young man... what brings you to our library today? Something tells me it’s not just for casual reading."

Liam hesitated before answering, debating how much to reveal. Finally, he exhaled and decided honesty was the best approach.

"I felt curious about the magic world and wanted to know more about it. As for a particular reason....I don’t have one. Is that a problem?"

Eryndorius’s gaze softened slightly at Liam’s words and he quickly defended himself.

"No, it’s not a problem at all. In fact, curiosity is always welcomed in this sphere. Now, tell me where you want to go and I might be able to help you out."

Liam followed the elder through the corridor, marveling at how the mood had shifted entirely from just moments ago. It seemed that fate had led him to yet another crucial figure in his journey.

And for once, he felt like he was heading in the right direction.

______

Liam kept his posture relaxed as he and Elder Elias stepped into the heart of the library.

The moment they entered, the subtle murmur of conversation in the vast hall hushed. Every pair of eyes turned toward them—some filled with curiosity, others with open astonishment.

It wasn’t just because Elder Elias was accompanying him, though that was a significant reason.

The man was a legendary figure, one of the most powerful magicians in the world and ranked #3 in the hierarchy of magic users.

Walking beside him, Liam naturally became the center of attention.

Normally, this level of scrutiny would have made him uncomfortable, but thanks to the system’s emotional suppression, he barely felt a thing.

He simply acknowledged the stares with a neutral expression before turning to Elder Elias. He was going to clarify the situation right now.

"Thank you for your help, Elder Elias. I’ll be able to find my way from here."

The elder gave him a curious glance before nodding.

"Very well. If you need anything, don’t hesitate to ask. I’ll be in the restricted archives."

Liam nodded in gratitude as the elder walked away, his presence still commanding the attention of the room. The moment Elias was gone, Liam took a deep breath and activated his magic control.

He willed himself to fade into the background—his presence diminishing to the point where people’s eyes naturally slid away from him, as if he were just another ordinary library patron.

Liam’s first instinct was to rely on the system for this, but he decided to purposely use his own will to suppress his magic and presence.

After all, he needed to lower his reliance on his system and develop his own skills.

Now that he was no longer drawing attention, Liam turned his focus to the bookshelves. He moved efficiently, searching for the texts he needed.

After a few minutes of browsing, he found ’Introduction to Mana Flow and The Art of Channeling Energy.’ He placed his hand over the cover, allowing the system to scan and copy the entire book into his memory.

It took mere seconds, and he moved on to look for more.

He collected books on elemental affinities, magical theory, and spell formations, absorbing the knowledge directly into his system.

However, when he searched for texts on summoning magic, he came up empty-handed.

[System: Summoning books are categorized under ’High-Risk Magic’ and stored in the Forbidden Section.]

Liam narrowed his eyes. Summoning magic was one of the key skills in his fragmented memories, and if he wanted to truly understand his abilities, he needed access to those books.

Even though he knew it was risky, he made up his mind.

His next stop—the Forbidden Section.
