Chapter 90: The Grand Schemes

Rhaenor had expected the Lightwatchers to encounter Elves. The sudden appearance of the Labyrinth had attracted attention from everyone. The Elves, above all, would never ignore such signs.

Even if they didn’t want the Labyrinth for themselves, they wouldn’t let it fall into another’s hands.

’They only sent one man?’ Rhaenor mused silently. ’That fits their usual behavior. Those lofty bastards never do more than they have to.’

But now came the more pressing question.

Who was that man? Who did the Elves send?

He pondered for a second before giving a clear order.

"Go and check if any Demi-Gods have entered the Wilds. No... not just that, check if there has been any movement from the other Demi-Gods or if someone has entered our world."

"Understood!" Micheal bowed deeply, clenching his fist over his chest. "Praise the Lady!"

"Praise the Lady," Rhaenor echoed softly, eyes already lost in thought.

As Micheal disappeared outside the door, Rhaenor tried to guess the identity of the man who had appeared in the Valoran Wilds. He had suspicions of him being a minor Demi-God, but he didn’t think it was the case.

He had asked Micheal to check for Demi-God activities just to be sure there wasn’t any variable in play. For example, an otherworldly race entering their world.

Only a Demi-God could travel through worlds alone, and if there had been a major teleportation Formation, he would have sensed it much earlier.

As the organization directly under a Deity, the Church of the Dawnfire Goddess possessed many blessed Artefacts that allowed them to keep an eye on Demi-Gods, and the other Churches were the same.

This was one of the ways they kept each other in check.

’If he is not a Demi-God, then he is likely at A-Rank or close to it. Only such individuals can survive that damned tree. But why did he go near the Tree anyways, and what did he do to incur such wrath from it in return?’

In fact, Rhaenor already had a guess. The Elves must have just sent a powerful Noble to keep an eye on the Valoran Wilds. It was a good strategy, as that single person could cover the whole area easily, and they also wouldn’t need to deploy a large force.

But as always, that man might have tried to study the Great Storm Tree and suffered the consequences. Rhaenor was well aware of the might of that damned tree and also the Elves’ obsession with it.

For some reason, the Royal Family of the Elves believed that the Great Storm Tree was somehow related to their Ancestor—the progenitor of the Elf race.

As the Royal Elf Family usually had very high affinity with lightning, wind, and wood, the claims weren’t far-fetched. Sadly, the Great Storm Tree had always been hostile to practically everyone, including the Elves.

So, they wanted to study it and understand the reason why it behaved that way. But they only had a few chances to do that. And even in those chances, they never managed to find out anything worth their time.

But they never gave up and had continued to study it for centuries. The beasts had a relatively less hostile relationship with the Elves most of the time, so they still allowed them to access the Great Storm Tree... sometimes.

But for the last century, there had been no one coming from the Elf race to study the Great Storm Tree, as if they had given up on it completely.

It was very unusual, but nobody had a clue as to why they abandoned the research.

Now, there was finally some reaction from the Elves towards the Great Storm Tree, which made Rhaenor confused. He couldn’t understand what they were doing.

In hindsight, it seemed as if the man had acted on impulse and suffered. It was plausible, as everyone from the Elf race had ambitions of uncovering the secrets of the Great Storm Tree.

But Rhaenor doubted things were so simple.

’Are they using the opening of the Labyrinth to distract us from seeing through their schemes surrounding the Great Storm Tree? Did they finally manage to get something out of their research?’

The more he thought about it, the more he felt that his guesses weren’t far from the truth. It was already unusual for the Elves to withdraw from the Great Storm Tree, seemingly abandoning something they had been doing for hundreds of years. But now, this just made the situation far too suspicious.

Rhaenor guessed that the reason they went into near-isolation for a century was because they had discovered some clues and were researching them for over a hundred years.

Now, the research had finally borne fruit, but they needed to confirm it by doing experiments with the Great Storm Tree—and that was what the man came to do, but failed miserably and got himself injured.

Rhaenor stood up in shock, as he remembered something he had noticed a few days ago when he had tried to understand the situation near the Great Storm Tree better.

"Concealment... Nightingale!"

Rhaenor couldn’t contain his shock anymore, as this likely involved a Deity—and anything involving them was a matter even he couldn’t handle... not without the help of the Goddess.

He quickly drew the symbol of the rising sun on his chest and prayed to the Church of the Dawnfire Goddess.

Suddenly, the temperature and brightness outside the hall changed, and the shadows cast by the windows shifted, forming a sentence that was very hard to read.

"Beware of Storm Tree."

Then, the shadows returned to normal along with the surroundings, as if nothing had happened.

Rhaenor felt a chill reading the words and quickly bowed, "Praise the Lady!"

Then, he returned to his chair, his expression returning to normal as if nothing had happened.

’If even She thinks the Storm Tree is dangerous for us—or maybe the situation around it—then we need to withdraw our forces from there. We can’t let them enter the region yet.’

Rhaenor could understand the meaning behind the Goddess’s words. There was a concealment from Nightingale—a honorific title given to the Deity holding the Authority over Concealment.

He couldn’t understand why the Great God would help the Elves, but the Goddess likely had more understanding of the situation. Even she would find it hard to counter the concealment from Nightingale.

So, it was better for Rhaenor to wait for further orders rather than charging directly into the unknown. Perhaps, that was what the Elves wanted them to do.

’Two Gods are working together this time.’ Rhaenor wracked his brain to come to a decision on what would be the best move in this situation.

Even if it was dangerous to enter the Great Storm Tree’s region, it didn’t mean they would simply sit back and watch their enemy do as they pleased.

’That man might have triggered something in the Great Storm Tree. Perhaps that’s the main source of danger. Wait!’

A possibility arose in his heart, and he felt his back turn cold. ’Are the Elves behind the sudden appearance of the Labyrinth?’

Just then, Micheal entered the hall and bowed before the Cardinal. Then, he reported, "Your Excellency, no Demi-Gods have left their territories, and there has been no movement from them in the last year."

He paused for a second and added, "No one has entered our world for over the last decade. We even ran a deep investigation, and while there had been sightings of Teleportation Rune Formations, none of them were successful."

"In short, the enemy is from our own world," Rhaenor sighed and then stood up, his voice echoing in the bright hall.

"Send the other Cardinal a message from me. I want to meet them as soon as possible. I will talk with the Pope myself."
