Chapter 91: Shenanigans

In the new town established by Kael and his subordinates, everyone was on alert and ready to fight and defend their new home.

Only one individual was relaxing on a wooden log. Her posture was languid, but her eyes were drawn to something distant. It seemed as if she was seeing something out of this world.

Kiona turned to look at Rias and asked, "How is he?" fгeewёbnoѵel_cσm

"Safe and sound," Rias replied. "But what he is doing to himself is pretty reckless. One mistake and he would end up dead."

Kiona bit her lips and turned to look to the west. She hated being so powerless that she needed to stay here, hidden away from the real danger while her loved one was risking his life for her somewhere else.

All because she was too weak.

This sense of being so helpless was familiar to her. She still remembered how her father had sent her outside the Tribe while he fought to protect them.

It was also because she was too weak to help him. She didn’t have the power to stand beside him.

All of this came rushing down on her mind, reminding her of the situation.

She clenched her jaw in frustration. She also wanted to help him, but there was nothing she could do. The most she could do for him was to not become a burden.

"My dear sister, you’re having some bad thoughts again, right?"

Jon’s chuckles snapped Kiona out of her thoughts as she turned to look at the lions and realized that they were much more relaxed than her.

Seth gave a side glance at her and said, "You are the youngest of us and also share the greatest burden. But why are you carrying it all alone? You have us and also Master."

"Yes! Just leave this bigger task to Master and trust him." Jon smirked. "Our master is really powerful and also very intelligent. Much more than that, he’s crafty and isn’t a very honorable man."

Seth glared at him, making him flinch slightly, but he didn’t back down. "Whether you two like it or not, it is honor that killed Father."

"And that honor is the reason we are alive," Seth quickly added. "I can understand you not agreeing with his ideology, but do not put disgrace to his name."

Jon snorted but said nothing else.

Kiona stared at the two of them and then smiled. She understood why Jon was so against being honorable and everything. Out of all of them, Jon was closest to their father, and his death had affected him the most.

He hated honor because he believed that’s what killed their father and ruined their happy family. But he also willingly followed most of their father’s ideals.

Kiona then closed her eyes and thought, ’Trust. Yes, I need to trust him. He said he will be fine, then he will be. And as his mate, I need to fulfill the duties of a mate.’

She slightly opened the lids of her eyes and looked around, realizing her mistake.’I was panicking and it led me to completely forget my role. In his absence, I need to work as a leader.’

Her gaze turned firm as she thought, ’And a leader panicking can doom everyone. I could have hidden our tracks or maybe even our homes. There were too many things I could have done, but all I did was... panic. Pathetic.’

She reprimanded herself, reminding herself that this wasn’t how a leader should behave. If she couldn’t even do that properly, then how could she walk beside Kael?

’I am not just weak, but also pathetic in other areas,’ she took a deep breath, as her eyes suddenly turned ablaze. "Enough! We have things to do. Get up!"

"There’s no need," Rias spoke from the side. "He should be returning soon."

Kiona was surprised and eagerly looked toward the west, awaiting his arrival. She also told herself to reflect on her actions today and improve herself.

Seconds turned into minutes.

The group continued to wait for Kael.

Then, Rias suddenly vanished from her place and appeared before them. But this time, she wasn’t alone. She had grabbed a golden-haired Elf by the collar as she gently put him down upon arriving.

Kael, who had finally managed to get a moment to breathe properly, landed on his knees, gasping for air. His makeup came off, revealing his true appearance.

"Master!"

Kiona rushed toward him and supported his weak body. She asked, "Are you alright?"

"Yes, I’m fine," Kael replied between breaths. "Just overdid it, I guess. I didn’t think it would be that terrible."

Kiona didn’t ask him directly what had happened or what he had done. Instead, she brought him inside their small home and helped him onto the luxurious bed.

As the beautiful dim lamp showered the room with golden light, Kael gave his body some time to recover. His Dragon Physique once again came in handy, as its ridiculous regeneration quickly mended even the metaphorical pathways of mana.

They had been injured from the sudden attack of mana. It was like a dam had broken, flooding the entire area with water and bending the river pathways.

It was already a miracle that he was able to control himself from not exploding from the inside out.

After a while, he opened his eyes and shifted toward Rias, who was sitting on a crimson sofa not far from them. He asked, "How’s the situation?"

"He has retreated and also reported the matter to the higher-ups. In return, he, along with all the other spies, were told to withdraw for the moment. They also received a warning not to approach the Great Storm Tree. Whatever you wanted to do seems to have succeeded."

Kael sighed in relief, as the tension built up in his body released and he finally relaxed. It really worked. Even though he had thought about it thoroughly and had considered its possible consequences, he still found it hard to believe that it worked so well.

It was then he suddenly noticed something. "Wait! You can hear their conversation?"

"Yes. They are doing it through the Astral World, so it isn’t that hard," Rias shrugged, taking out a golden apple out of nowhere and began to munch on it.

Kael ignored her actions and muttered, "That’s weird. I don’t think they would be this relaxed in this matter. Something is amiss."

"They used a Blessed Artefact to detect major changes in the Astral World—mainly to check on every Demi-God in the world," Rias replied. "Only when they were sure there were no Demi-Gods in the area did they send the messages."

Kael looked at her with his mouth agape. He quickly asked, "Doesn’t that mean you can bypass an Artefact blessed by a Deity herself?"

"Kind of," Rias nodded. "Don’t ask how, because even I don’t know."

"No, that’s completely fine. It just means you’re even more special and more powerful than we expected. That can be very useful," Kael smiled and then sat up with Kiona’s help.

His body still hurt from all the shenanigans he had pulled to bait the human spy.

Rias nodded after finishing her apple, as she took out another one and asked, "Still, what did you actually do? I can just guess some of it."

"I just used the threat that Elves possess and also the speciality of the Great Storm Tree to push the humans back," Kael smiled. "I have a strong soul and an immense mana pool, so as long as one doesn’t check carefully, I can pretend to be a powerful figure."

He paused and then added, "I fabricated a story for them. A powerful Elf visited the Wilds for the same reason as them, but he found something—or did something—near the Great Storm Tree, which seemed to have triggered something within it."

"That’s why you told her to create a disturbance in the Astral World," Kiona whispered upon realizing the reason behind his words.

"Yes, but it was also because I wanted to use it as an excuse to show them why I wasn’t using the Astral World to escape," Kael nodded and said. "But that one didn’t work because they checked for Demi-Gods. Now they know that I’m not a Demi-God."

He smiled and added, "That’s why I had another plan in mind. I made my mana pool descend into my body, which scared off the human spy and also showed that I’m some powerful Elf. Most of the other signs—like using winds at the last moment, or manipulating mana fluctuations—were just to improve the act."

"But isn’t this the opposite of what you want?" Rias asked in confusion. "This will surely draw attention from the major powers to the Great Storm Tree. Now, they know that there is something wrong with the Storm Tree and will definitely come to check on it."

Kael showed off a wide grin. "That was exactly my plan."
