Chapter 67: Infiltrated.

It was near midnight and Roxy was still standing outside of the door where Mr Neuman and the rest of the others were guarded. She was currently smoking a cigar and trying not to fall asleep; this was a big task for her since she loved to laze about quite a bit.

Aside from her there were five other awakened superhumans, each seeming more tired than the other. Well, given the exception of Kriss and Sharma who Leo had told her to watch out for, when she had first met them she knew them to be very talkative and cocky about their personal lives. But for some reason now they were cold and lifeless, almost like they were just hollow shells of their original selves.

This caused Roxy to become increasingly more wary of them. Crap, my legs are about to give out. I wonder what’s up with those two, who knows how that schmuck is dealing with things on the other side?

She let her thoughts drift from subject to subject like she always did when she was bored. Looking for something to keep her entertained, she turned to face Flint, the huge awakened who stood by her side. Unlike her and the others he seemed more conditioned for long night watches and barely snoozed off.

"Hey Flint, wanna make out?" She said the first words that came out of her mouth regardless of how they sounded.

The huge awakened grunted and responded in a deep voice. "Don’t talk to me, crazy girl." He gave a long pause before adding, "Don’t call me Flint."

Roxy’s eyes brightened as she smiled deeply, her face now finding a new victim to plague. "What do you mean, I thought you were Flint."

He grumbled, "I never said I was, you simply just assumed I was."

She gasped, not in shock but in excitement. A lewd grin stretched from ear to ear as she spoke. "You don’t say. You really looked like a Flint to me, or a Joffrey."

The huge awakened grumbled again, the irritation evident in his voice. "You know those are bad for your health. They are literally killing their best customers."

She snickered as she let out another puff of smoke into the air. She hesitated for a little bit before she spoke. "Awakened have stronger lungs I guess."

The huge awakened expected her to say something more but she suddenly fell silent. He took a moment and looked at her face, her bright blue eyes seeming to radiate like stars in the night sky. He suddenly noticed something he had not seen earlier.

"Didn’t you have a scar over your eye the other day?" He asked with slight interest; he knew most awakened scars but not completely. 𝚏𝐫𝚎𝗲𝕨𝐞𝐛𝕟𝚘𝐯𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝗺

Roxy smiled slightly before answering, "I moved it." She could sense the confused eyes of the awakened on her but said nothing for a while before letting out a heavy sigh. "It’s something I can do."

"Hmm." He grunted, knowing fully well that she wanted to keep her ability a secret from him. It was no new thing for a superhuman to keep what they could do hidden from a third party. His eyes fell down to Kriss and Sharma. "You’ve been watching those two for a long time, is it because you have reason to be wary of them? Did that little weakling tell you that?"

There was a sudden shift in the air around Roxy as her eyes grew darker and she looked up at the awakened with a cold look on her face. "Don’t insult my comrade."

He chuckled darkly at her words. "Comrade? Concepts of having comrades and friends are what make weaklings. Relying on oneself is what is true strength."

"I know that," she said coldly. "But it’s also what cowards do."

The awakened raised a questioning eyebrow. "Cowards?"

She looked away from him and tugged at her pants nervously. "Yes, if I had been less like you perhaps I might—I might have—" She shut her mouth and said nothing more.

The huge awakened said nothing more; he could sense that she was conservative about the topic. And he very much appreciated the silence, but a part of him still wished they could talk more.

The next few seconds of silence were the last thing they enjoyed before the explosion of bullets sounded outside the hall. They could hear machine guns and bullets raining down, followed by screams.

"Finally something to kill the boredom," the huge awakened said in an elated tone.

Roxy felt indifferent in all the chaos. She smiled uneasily, not out of pleasure but as a force of habit. "Do you think one monster can break through all those defenses?" She asked.

One of the five other awakened in the room answered, "That’s what we’re here for, isn’t it?"

A speaker located somewhere in the corner area of the roof suddenly came to life, and the sound of frantic wailing came from the other end. The voice was that of a man filled with agitation and fear. "This is the control room, the system has been tampered with. We have been infiltrated... I repeat we have been infiltrated..."

"...I cannot reach the boss. If anyone can hear this, it’s hell outside. Everyone is killing themselves, it’s a bloody massacre."

"What the hell’s that supposed to mean?" One of the awakened said in a worried tone. "Why would they kill each other?"

The voice on the other end continued. "I don’t know what’s happening but there are two people entering the main hall now and no one is stopping them. Everyone is fighting each other.... What the hell, is that a horse?"

A loud scream sounded from the other end, followed by the sound of someone choking and wheezing, and then after a few seconds the line went silent, leaving every awakened in the hall lost in a wave of confusion.

Roxy tried to piece together the words she had heard and link them to construct ideas. There were some words she managed to grasp: something about people killing each other, two people coming their way, something about a horse.

Somehow all of these answers only asked more questions, and perhaps the thought that there was something to worry about other than the monster they were meant to kill was haunting.

Where was Hinata? Who were these people, and were they also monsters themselves? Roxy did not like this one bit; the moment of shock caused her to take her eyes off Kriss and Sharma.

A fraction of a second later they could hear the sound of something falling to the ground and sending sprinkles of a dark-coloured liquid flying everywhere.

The huge awakened was the first to react as he turned back to see Kriss and Sharma standing over two awakened bodies that collapsed to the ground. Both of these bodies were headless, with their heads now in the hands of Kriss and Sharma who maintained a lifeless image on their faces.

"What the goddamn hell are you shits doing?" The huge awakened said as he watched the life taken from two of them.

Roxy bit her lower lip. "Shit, it was only for a second."

New questions arose from the depths of her mind. Had Leo been right that these two were involved in the death of the other two awakened earlier? If they were, what was their motive? Could it be that they wanted to eliminate the competition and keep the final reward for themselves? Or could they have an ulterior motive?

Roxy tried to freeze her mind of these thoughts as Kriss and Sharma charged towards the remaining living awakened in the hall, that being her and the huge awakened.

As much as they wanted to fight back, their minds still clung to the sudden belief that they could have been the next to die in that moment. This reminded them that no matter how strong a superhuman was, death was something that could happen at any given moment.
