Chapter 369: The Show Is Over!

Chapter 369

"All that for a trickle of blood?" the man asked as he sighed, his spear pointed right at Finral, who was on his knees in exhaustion. "You can do better than that," he said, and then he exploded from his position towards the kneeling boy.

His spear thrust towards Finral’s head while he shut his eyes in fear until—

Clang!

And a voice followed. "That’s enough from you!"

"Huh? Who could have saved me?" Finral mumbled beneath his breath as he slowly opened his earlier shut eyes, only to see a wave of dust obscure his vision. Gradually, it settled down to reveal a bulky man standing in front of him with his back turned to him.

The man wore normal clothing like the civilians did, but one thing stood out on him, and that was his yellow bandana on his head that bore the insignia of a yellow sun.

"Who’s he?" Finral mumbled as he saw the man he was clashing against earlier trembling in fear and taking a step back.

Only then did Finral notice that the bandana man was holding onto his attacker’s infused spear with his bare hand. No gauntlets, no protection. Just his skin and overwhelming strength.

’To do that, he needs to have a strong body, Ki, and raw power. Is... is he stronger than my attacker? If so, then I think I might just give up any chance of fighting right now,’ Finral thought as he swallowed a forceful lump of saliva.

"Sir Duke," the clan member gulped as he quickly bowed down to the bulky man in front of him.

"What were you trying to do, Sunny?" Duke asked with a huge frown on his face as he glared at the young man before him.

"I... I... I was trying to arrest a red brigade member when he obstructed and stopped me, sir," Sunny replied as he stuttered in fear, unable to meet Duke’s intense gaze.

The bulky man known as Duke turned around to face Finral, who was still on his knees, exhausted and panting as if he had just run a marathon.

’Shit! Is this going to turn into a two-versus-one fight for me? No... I’m sure this Duke fellow would take me out without breaking a sweat.’

Finral’s eyes darted nervously as he took in Duke’s calm yet terrifying demeanor.

’Come to think of it, I’m having problems reading his Ki signature. The only person I ever had that issue with is Dad. No... don’t tell me he is as strong as Dad. Yeah, I’m dead.’ Finral thought as he broke out in beads of sweat.

"What’s the first rule of our clan?" Duke asked as he turned back to face Sunny.

"We should have verified and correct information before we carry out a task," Sunny replied while still bowing down.

"And did you do that before you attacked?" Duke asked, raising a thick brow, his deep voice rolling like thunder.

"I... I didn’t, sir." Sunny gulped loudly.

"So why the hell did you attack someone you weren’t sure was a member of the red brigade?" Duke barked as energy began spilling out of him slowly, thick waves of Ki spreading through the air like ripples across a pond.

"S... sir. He had red hair," Sunny managed to stutter out.

"So? Did he attack any civilians? Did he show any signs of aggression? Did he bear any signs of being a red brigader aside from the red hair?" Duke asked, his brow creasing deeper with each word.

"No, sir," Sunny replied, his voice barely above a whisper now.

"So you just carried out an attack based on your suspicions without following the suspect and keeping an eye on him. You attacked someone innocent and lost the guilty one, who we have been chasing for weeks."

Duke’s voice thundered through the street, his words echoing in the silence that had fallen over the onlookers. The wind seemed to still, and even the townsfolk hiding in doorways held their breath, watching the scene unfold with wide eyes.

"Attacked regular civilians, attacked kids, and also destroyed part of the town in your fight. Does that reflect well on our reputation?" Duke asked in annoyance, and Sunny couldn’t do anything but gulp in fear as sweat trickled down more from his face.

"All you Twilight Reapers are so annoying!" Duke just shouted in anger, which in turn produced a burst of energy around him. Twisting and turning, he could see the civilians still watching what was going on from the sidelines.

"What? Is there some sort of show going on? Don’t you have houses?" he asked in irritation, his eyes scanning the faces in the crowd, but the civilians didn’t move an inch, which annoyed him to no end.

"Si... sir, I’m so sorry for my mistake," Sunny croaked out, bowing even lower now, his voice barely audible over Duke’s heavy breaths.

"Meet me at the base," Duke said, and then he crouched down slightly, his eyes set on the sky. Then, with a powerful bang, the ground beneath him shattered, a deep crater forming beneath his feet, and then—just like that—he shot away into the sky with a deafening whoosh that left dust swirling in his wake.

Sunny himself surrounded his feet with Ki and began sprinting away at astonishing speed, leaving Finral still on his knees while the civilians now began leaving the square and returning to their houses, whispering quietly among themselves.

’What was that? I thought anybody with the red insignia on them was a red brigade. So why did that Duke fellow not take things seriously? He didn’t even see Grey, so how can he come to such a conclusion? Or... was he here the whole time?’ Finral thought as he glanced around the square while slowly getting up, one hand pressed against his knee for support.

’There’s no use thinking of all that now. I need to find Vanessa and Millie now. Wait! They aren’t here?’ he thought as he twisted and turned, scanning the now-empty square. Then it clicked in his mind.

’Right! I had told them to leave with Grey and head back home. They should be back home by now. Oh well! Let’s begin the painful journey back home,’ he sighed, then picked himself up with effort and started slugging his way back, limping slightly with each step.

In an undisclosed location, the area was dimly lit, with only a few faint lights casting eerie glows against the stone walls. Four figures were seen standing in the shadows. They dressed in red armor, their faces obscured, waiting for something—or someone.

In a few moments, the person appeared.

He was battered and injured, with his red attires stained with blood, adding an even deeper crimson shade to them again.

"Why didn’t you all tell me you posted another agent to that town?" the man demanded immediately as he entered, his voice hoarse and strained from both injury and frustration.

"Another agent? We didn’t. You were the only one the organization sent to gather intel," one of the four figures replied calmly.

"Huh? Then who was the red-haired back in town?" the injured man asked, his brows furrowed in confusion and irritation.

"What red-haired? And why are you so injured?"

"I ran into the Midnight Sun Clan, and a fight followed. Luckily, the red-haired showed up, and the focus was shifted back to him, letting me escape," the injured man replied, panting lightly as he clutched his side.

"We didn’t send any other person other than you. Just ignore him. He must be an ordinary civilian caught up in our mess," one of the four men said, his voice laced with indifference.

"Forget that, and let’s focus on our plan. The bosses await results. We need to get everything in place for his arrival," another figure added, stepping forward.

"Sure, sure," the injured man sighed, wincing as he adjusted his stance. Then, they all stood in a circle, their hands crossed in an X in front of them.

"Hail the devil!" they all said in unison, their voices echoing off the walls like a dark chant.

And at that exact moment, a bright light shot down from the sky, engulfing them entirely in a radiant, almost blinding glow. Slowly, steadily, the light intensified until they vanished completely, taken away as if they had never been there to begin with.
