Chapter 236: GRANDPARENTS

THIS BRAT...

Sohee smacked Kim Heedo on the back.

He didn’t mean to hit his husband hard, but his hand and wrist hurt.

Ouch.

Why is my husband’s body so solid?!

"Hyung, why did you do that? Did you hurt yourself?" Kim Heedo asked worriedly while checking Sohee’s hand and wrist. "If you want to hit me, just tell me, Hyung. I’ll punch myself for you."

Sohee was tempted to do that, but he held back because he knew Kim Heedo would really do that.

And I also know that he won’t hold back if I ask him to punch himself.

"I’m sorry for making you upset, Hyung."

"Do you know why I’m upset?"

"..."

"Heedo-ya, it’s not your fault that you were born a Hyper-Dominant Alpha. So, what’s happening to our twins isn’t your fault either," Sohee said, cupping Kim Heedo’s face between his hands while wiping the tears off of his husband’s face. "And I’m sorry. I think I overreacted when I found out that our babies are already producing pheromones. It’s not a bad thing because the two of us have a Secondary Gender. I just wish they’d experience manifesting a little later in life. But I can see why my reaction would have made you feel guilty. I’m sorry about that, yeobo."

"Hyung, you don’t have to apologize for that," Kim Heedo said while shaking his head. "Your reaction has nothing to do with my guilt. As an Alpha, I just can’t help but hate myself sometimes. After all, I know that my kind has hurt you in the past. That’s why I understand why you’re worried about our kids having a Secondary Gender."

Ah, now I get it.

"Since you’re being honest, I’ll be honest, too," Sohee said, his voice cracking a bit. "We’ve already had this conversation before, so I don’t know why I’m repeating myself again. But, as you know, I suffered a lot as an Omega. I’m afraid that if one of our children— or both of them— end up manifesting as an Omega, they might hate me for it. That’s what I’m afraid of, Heedo-ya."

Kim Heedo looked heartbroken for Sohee.

This is why I don’t want to have this conversation with him again.

"Hyung, wait a moment."

Kim Heedo pulled Sohee’s hands from his face, then he stood up and left the room.

Huh?

Where is he going?

Sohee was starting to worry when Kim Heedo finally returned.

His husband returned with red and swollen cheeks.

"Yeobo, did you slap your face?"

"Yeah. I need to pull myself together," Kim Heedo said, and then he sat next to Sohee. "But I didn’t want the twins to wake up, so I went out to slap myself."

Aigoo.

"Hyung, we’ll raise Woochul and Woosung with so much love. And we’ll raise them with a proper understanding of their Secondary Gender," Kim Heedo said, holding Sohee’s hands. "I’ll stop feeling guilty for being a Hyper-Dominant Alpha, and you’ll stop blaming yourself for being an Omega. We can’t have a weak mindset when we’re raising two kids. And if things get overwhelming, we must absolutely share the burden with each other. I don’t want you to suffer alone, Hyung."

Aww.

"I don’t want you to suffer either, Heedo-ya," Sohee said, taking a deep breath before squeezing his husband’s hands a bit tighter. "Let’s get stronger together for our babies."

***

SOHEE made the resolve to be a stronger individual and mother for his babies.

But he found himself crying in their bedroom when Kim Woochul and Kim Woosung both threw their food.

The twins’ favorite meal was tender beef and mashed potatoes.

But his sons refused to eat.

"Madam, please don’t cry," Mrs. Go, one of the nannies, comforted him. "It’s normal for babies to lose their appetite when they’re sick."

Kim Woochul and Kim Woosung had already been discharged from the hospital.

The twins only had their infant formula last night.

But the babies had refused eating ever since that morning.

Sohee called the pedia, and the doctor assured him that it was normal for sick babies to have less appetite.

Apparently, as long as the twins were drinking water, it should be fine.

But he was still worried.

It was almost dinner, and yet his babies hadn’t eaten a single thing yet.

Hence, he couldn’t help but cry because of worry.

To be fair, Kim Woochul and Kim Woosung looked fine. They just wanted to play with their new toys instead of eating.

In fact, the twins were even ignoring Sohee.

They must be upset with me because I kept forcing them to eat.

"Madam, please take a break," Mrs. An, the other nanny, said. "We’ll take care of the mess here, and we’ll also try to feed the young masters again."

Sohee could only nod because his throat hurt from crying.

He kissed Kim Woochul and Kim Woosung on the forehead before leaving the room to take a breather.

Fortunately, he didn’t get the chance to sulk because Go Gunjoon arrived.

Right.

My brother told me in advance that he’d be visiting the twins.

"Hyung, I’m here."

Sohee forced himself to smile. "Welcome to our home, Gunjoon-ah."

"Did you cry, Hyung?" Go Gunjoon asked worriedly while looking at his face. "Did my brother-in-law make you cry?"

"No, of course not. I’m just worried because the twins haven’t eaten anything all day."

"Uhm, Hyung..."

"What is it?"

"Actually, Eomma heard me when I was talking to you on the phone earlier. So, she found out that your babies don’t have an appetite," Go Gunjoon said, and then he raised the lunch bag that he was holding. "Eomma cooked this for you and the babies."

"What is it?"

"It’s egg and tofu porridge, Hyung."

Ah, so that was why Go Gunjoon asked earlier if the kids were allergic to egg and tofu.

Luckily, my babies don’t have allergies yet.

"I tried feeding congee to the twins earlier, but they refused," Sohee said, sighing. "But let’s see if they’ll like that one."

"Eomma said this was your favorite dish when you were a toddler, Hyung."

"Huh? Really?"

Sohee couldn’t remember the food that his mother prepared for him when he was a child.

I was too young to remember.

"Eomma said she would make this egg and tofu porridge for you whenever you were sick and had no appetite," Go Gunjoon said carefully. "So, Eomma is hoping that this porridge might bring back the twins’ appetite."

Oh.

Sohee felt a pang in his chest, but he ignored it for now. "I hope so, too."

***

"HOW ARE the twins?"

Hmm?

Kim Heedo was wondering why his grandfather suddenly summoned him to his office.

An intern like me shouldn’t be here...

Moreover, he should be on his way home now.

If the twins don’t have an appetite yet, we’ll bring them to the hospital again.

"Grandpa, I know you already know that my babies are still a bit sick. Their fever is causing them to lose their appetite," Kim Heedo explained. "That’s why please let me go home. I want to check on my husband and our twins."

His grandfather cleared his throat as if he were embarrassed. "Meet Secretary Doh before you leave. I bought some fruits for the twins. I heard they like tropical fruits. Let them have some. It’s good for the babies."

Aigoo.

"Grandpa, if you’re worried about the twins, why not bring the fruits to them yourself?" Kim Heedo asked, sighing. "It’s not like Sohee Hyung will kick you out if you visit our house. Just don’t make my husband upset."

***

IT WAS like a miracle.

Much to Sohee’s relief, Kim Woochul and Kim Woosung not only ate the egg and tofu porridge that Go Gunjoon brought— but the twins actually devoured the entire thing.

His babies got so full that they immediately fell asleep after having their early dinner.

Before Sohee knew it, he and the nannies were already putting Kim Woochul and Kim Woosung to bed after giving them a quick and warm bath.

Then he asked Kang Sul to drive Go Gunjoon home.

But before his brother left, they had a brief conversation.

"Gunjoon-ah, please tell your mother I said thank you."

"No worries, Hyung. I’ll tell Eomma that the twins enjoyed her porridge."

"Can you ask her if I can have the recipe?"

"Hyung, would you like to have Eomma’s phone number? I’m sure she won’t mind if I give it to you."

Sohee only smiled and sent off his brother then.

But, now, he was alonbe in the dining hall with a bowl of egg and tofu porridge in front of him.

He tasted it earlier before feeding it to the twins.

And, honestly, he liked it.

That was why Sohee was there now— having a full bowl of his mother’s egg and tofu porridge for himself.

Is this really my favorite childhood dish? 𝒻𝑟ℯℯ𝑤𝑒𝑏𝑛𝘰𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝒸𝑜𝘮

He took a spoonful.

And another.

Again and again.

The egg and tofu porridge was delicious and warm.

Before Sohee knew it, he was already eating it with so much gusto.

And the more spoonful he took, the more his buried memories of his mother resurfaced.

I remember now...

He really used to pester his mother to make that porridge for him, especially whenever he was sick.

I know this is cringe, but this is the taste of my mother’s love.

Sohee’s mother may not have loved him the way a mother should, but maybe she loved him the way she could.

Of course, that didn’t excuse her negligence as a mother.

However...

"Am I a kid?" Sohee asked himself bitterly. Tears were rolling down his cheeks, but he couldn’t stop himself from eating the porridge. "Why do I suddenly miss that person?"
