Chapter 231: No need to lie

"Yes, it is possible, but your mother cannot put you in such danger. The cursed mages in there will do anything to kill you because only you can restore the realm to its former glory. You are a fire mage, the only one in existence and you are possibly as powerful as Ioas." Sage looked at Cyrus with wide eyes as Anghel explained fully and calmly.

If she could bring the mages back to the realm, it would mean that they would have a safe haven.

"But that wretched place is highly corrupted and cursed once more." Cyrus said calmly while maintaining eye contact with Sage.

"I can break the curse." Sage muttered, her lips pursed.

Cyrus’ lips twitched. "It’s not as simple as you think, my love," he said soothingly as he cupped her face. "For far too long, that place has been cursed."

"I’m still capable." Sage was determined, and he knew she was, but breaking such a curse wasn’t something he could do overnight; it was nearly impossible. "You can teach me!" She added excitedly, causing him to scoff in disbelief.

"Don’t be in a hurry." Cyrus whispered and planted a feather-like kiss on her brow, causing her to smile easily. "We have a lot on our plate."

"Do not change the subject; you know they want to trap her there, in the sea itself." Cyrus stared at Anghel as he revealed harshly.

Sage let out a sigh. She was well aware of this. She’d fought with a massive hand, and the worst part was she couldn’t get those worms out of her head. She felt sick just thinking about them.

"Return to the mansion; we’ll all be there soon." Sage sternly ordered him, and he burst out laughing, only to be met with another glare from Cyrus.

"You’re so rude." As the couple vanished from his sight, Anghel scoffed and frowned.

He took a deep breath, walked over to the glowing lake, and shook his head as if shaking off all negative thoughts.

"Could it be true? She doesn’t believe in me enough to approach me? I’ve never hurt her, so why should I prove my worth to see her?" He was deeply hurt that Aurora had not met him ever since the demise of the ice dragons. She was a typical spirit who could even enter Videnia if she so desired, which meant she could have approached him all these years that he had been sealed but she hadn’t. Not even a glance.

"I know I wronged you, but I didn’t hurt you like they did; I didn’t kill him, and I didn’t wipe out the ice dragons.. I wanted to save them." He kept muttering, his heart heavy, regretting most of the decisions he’d made in his life before being sealed.

Aurora had always favored him and taken the best care of him, but he had failed her. He truly did.

"I apologize. I’ll protect him if that’s what you want, but your arrogant son doesn’t need my help..." With a deep sigh, he turned away from the lake and slowly added, "He is overpowered." Then raked his fingers through his hair.

...

When Katherine returned to the town, it had been completely burned to the ground, she was in complete shock because there was no sign of any houses, bodies, or anything else.

When she heard a roar in the sky, she let out a deep sigh and smiled faintly as she noticed River circling. He knew Cyrus would find her and Sage, but he was still furious and lost when she vanished like that, and he decided to vent his rage on the attacking statkus mages.

"River!" She yelled, hoping he heard her. With her eyes fixed on his circling, she placed her hands at the sides of her mouth, calling out once more. "River!"

He took off and landed in front of her with a loud thud. She smiled as a bright glow engulfed him, and when it faded, he was back in his human form.

He dashed over to her and snatched her into a tight embrace. "You’re all right." He whispered, and she hugged him back.

"I am." She exhaled, and they disengaged the hug, staring at each other lovingly.

.

They entered the mages-filled forest. The majority of them had one or two bruises from fighting the statkus mages. The sight of the young mages with their parents made her miss her mother, who she had heard was in critical condition.

She and River could feel eyes on them and hear most of their whispers as they passed the mages.

"I heard she had memory loss." 𝓯𝙧𝓮𝓮𝒘𝓮𝙗𝙣𝒐𝒗𝒆𝓵.𝓬𝓸𝒎

"I’m curious what happened. However, she does not appear weak,"

"I wonder how she will react once she sees Valerie."

"Oh, no good fortune for us."

"When are we going to recover from these bad lucks that seem to attract us like a magnet?"

"I’m not sure who to blame anymore."

As they walked deeper into the forest, still waking past mages, Katherine sighed deeply and hugged River’s arm.

"Katherine!" Darren called as he walked up to them, looking relieved.

"Where is my mother?" Katherine asked right away, only concerned about her mother’s well-being at the time.

Darren slowly nodded. "Follow me," he said as he walked away.

Her heart skipped a beat. She and River began walking behind Darren, whose movements were more nervous than she had anticipated. Was her mother’s illness that upsetting? Who had put her in such a state that Darren was worried?

Finally, they arrived at a location near a small brook with several large rocks close to the trees. Kion sat on the ground, completely exhausted. He had a small bruise on his cheek. When his eyes suddenly met with Katherine’s, his eyes widened.

"Katherine?!" He called completely stunned and stood up.

"Where is my mother?" Katherine asked again, this time more eagerly, and let go of River’s arm.

Kion was stunned, and Katherine was exhausted by his reaction. Kion looked at River before returning his gaze to her.

"Come on, come on! I don’t like this; I want to see her right now!" At this point, she had raised her voice. There was so much negative tension that it appeared as if her mother had died.

Kion cleared his throat and began uncontrollably stuttering. "Katherine, I do..n’t thin..k..k you should see..."

"Enough!" Katherine abruptly cut him off and huffed angrily.

"Very well." Kion sighed deeply and walked away wordlessly, stopping in front of a large tree, and Katherine followed him hesitantly.

"Mother!" Katherine squeaked in surprise, tears welling up in her eyes and spilling out reluctantly.

Valerie was unconscious, with her head resting on Penelope’s lap. She had bruises on her face that caused it to swell slightly, but it was seeing that her mother’s left arm was gone that caused Katherine pain and shock. She felt dizzy for a moment, but River rushed to her side and helped her stand straight.

"Who did it?!? Who took my mother’s arm?!" Katherine screamed in agony and rage.

Kion was about to say something when his gaze was drawn to River’s, causing him to immediately close his mouth.

He then swallowed and cleared his throat. "She is alive, which we should be grateful for, but she hasn’t woken up since she was hit." He spoke calmly and in a low tone, almost as if he were counting his words. His heart was heavy with sadness. No matter how badly he wanted to tell her, he couldn’t because he’d end up stuttering like a fool.

"Katherine." Katherine was trembling as River called slowly.

He reluctantly let go of her and watched as she walked slowly towards her mother, then sobbed and sniffed on her knees. She was in so much trouble, and her heart swelled with rage.

"Mother," She sniffed and called out slowly as she gently placed her hand on her mother’s bruised check. "I apologize..."

Everyone’s eyes widened in surprise. Did she realize it was her who had taken her mother’s arm?

"I apologize for leaving you alone; if I had been with you, this would not have happened to you." Katherine sobbed and looked at River, who was looking at her with guilt. The way he looked at her, you’d think he was the one who had taken Valerie’s arm.

His heart clenched as he saw her in tears, and his mind kept telling her that bringing her to her mother was a huge mistake, but their meeting was unavoidable.

"Who was it that did this to her?" Katherine asked, sobbing profusely. The pain in her eyes was piercing, and he was terrified of what she would do if she discovered she was the one who had unintentionally hurt her mother.

"I’m going to find out who did it. You shouldn’t worry about anyth..."

"No need to lie to me," she sniffed, and he felt his heart skip a beat as she revealed, "I know I am the monster who did this to her."
