Henry’s smirk slowly faded as he stared at the folder on the table.
His hands rested motionless, the small tapping of his fingers stilled as the silence grew heavier.
Callian leaned against the wall, arms crossed, his calm body a funny contrast to the tension in the room.
"Go ahead," he said again in a lazy tone. "Take a look. You’ve been so confident this whole time. Let’s see if you still are."
Henry’s jaw tightened.
He didn’t reach for the folder but turned his eyes toward Eira.
She sat back in her chair, her wrists still cuffed to the table, but her confidence was the same.
"Whatever is in there," Henry said slowly, controlling his voice, "you’re playing a dangerous game, Eira. One you don’t have the experience to win."
Eira tilted her head, her lips curved into a cold smile. "Funny. I seem to be holding my own just fine. Maybe the real problem is you underestimated me. Again."
Henry exhaled sharply, ignoring Callian’s presence as if he were irrelevant.
"You think this changes anything? Whatever little stunt you’ve pulled with Steven won’t last. He’s weak, and he’ll turn on you the moment I apply pressure."
Callian finally pushed off the wall, his relaxed expression hardened as he stepped closer to the table. "Henry, you seem to have forgotten something."
"And what’s that?" Henry turned to look at him.
"That Eira isn’t alone," Callian replied.
He leaned forward, placing his palms flat on the table as he stared Henry down. "You’ve spent your entire life manipulating people, tearing them apart. But she’s not some pawn you can push around. Not anymore, not ever."
Henry met Callian’s glare with equal intensity. "You think you’re the knight in shining armor, don’t you? Coming to her rescue, saving her from the big, bad wolf?" He chuckled darkly. "You’re nothing but a distraction."
Callian didn’t flinch. "If I’m a distraction, then why do you look so worried?"
Henry’s gaze went back to the folder.
Finally, he reached for it, slowly and deliberately. frёeωebɳovel.com
He opened it, going through the documents inside.
His facial expression remained impassive at first, but then his brows furrowed slightly.
The silence in the room grew louder, and it was becoming harder to ignore it.
Eira leaned forward, her voice cut through the stillness. "That’s the thing about evidence, Henry. When it’s real, it speaks for itself."
Henry closed the folder. "This doesn’t change anything."
Eira raised an eyebrow. "Doesn’t it? That evidence clears my name and paints you as the criminal you’ve always been. And if you try to spin it any other way, we’ll make sure the world knows the truth."
Henry’s lips twitched into a smile, but it lacked his usual confidence. "You’re so certain, aren’t you? So sure you’ve got me cornered."
Eira didn’t respond immediately, letting the silence speak for itself.
Then, she spoke. "I don’t just want you cornered, Henry. I want you undone. And the best part? You handed me the tools to do it."
Callian placed a hand on her shoulder, reminding her to stay calm. "We’re done here," he said, his tone clipped.
Henry leaned back in his chair, crossing his arms as he watched them. "You think this is over?"
His voice was almost amused. "You’re playing my game, Eira. And no matter how clever you think you are, you’ll never outmatch me."
Eira stood, her chains rattling slightly as she looked down at him. "It’s not your game anymore, Henry. It’s mine."
Callian signaled to the officer waiting by the door. "We’re leaving. She’s coming with me."
The officer hesitated. "Mr. Blackwood gave specific orders—"
"I don’t care about his orders," Callian interrupted. "She’s innocent, and we have the evidence to prove it. Unless you want to be part of his cover-up, you’ll release her. Now."
The officer glanced at Henry, who said nothing, his face was red.
Finally, the officer stepped forward and unlocked Eira’s cuffs.
As she rubbed her wrists, Callian stepped closer, lowering his voice so only she could hear. "Let’s go before he tries something else."
Eira nodded, still locked on Henry as they turned to leave.
The door closed behind them, leaving Henry alone in the room.
He sat in silence for a long moment, his hands clasped tightly in front of him.
His mind pieced together everything that had just happened.
He hadn’t expected Eira to come armed with real evidence—evidence Steven had betrayed him to provide.
"Steven," he muttered under his breath, his eyes narrowed.
The betrayal stung, but more than that, it infuriated him.
Steven had always been a liability, but now he had crossed a line.
Henry reached for his phone, dialing a number with practiced ease.
"It’s me," he said when the line connected. "We have a problem. I want Steven watched. Every move he makes, every word he says—I want to know about it."
The voice on the other end replied, and Henry’s jaw tightened.
"I don’t care what it takes. Find him. And when you do, remind him what happens to people who cross me."
He ended the call, tossing the phone onto the table.
He shifted back to Eira. She had played her hand well, but Henry wasn’t finished yet.
"She thinks she’s won," he muttered, a cold smile formed on his lips. "But this is far from over. You will come back to me as my daughter."
Outside the station, Eira and Callian stepped into the cool evening air, the atmosphere was still clinging to them like a second skin.
"Are you okay?" Callian looked at her.
Eira nodded, but her eyes were distant. "He’s not going to stop, Callian. You know that, right?"
Callian placed a hand on her back, guiding her toward the car. "Let him try. We’ll be ready."
Eira’s lips pressed into a thin line as she slid into the passenger seat.
"He’s already planning his next move. I can feel it."
Callian started the engine, his jaw set. "Let him plan. The more desperate he gets, the more mistakes he’ll make."
As they drove away, Eira stared out the window.
She knew Henry wouldn’t go down easily, but she was ready for the fight.
For Marion. For her mother. For herself.
"Let’s see how far he’s willing to fall," she murmured.
Callian glanced at her. "Let’s make sure he lands hard."
