Chapter 98: My Little Sister
"If you don’t want to be beaten by a dog, I would suggest you leave me alone."
"And what if I don’t?" the man grinned.
Eira grabbed an empty glass. "This will collide with your brain."
The man stepped back, putting his hands up. "I’m sorry. I don’t want any problems."
"I thought so."
Sana and Eira grabbed their drinks and went back to the dance floor.
She swayed slightly as the bass-heavy music thumped around her, the club lights casted a kaleidoscope of colors on her flushed face.
Eira’s first drink had been sweet and light, just as Sana promised.
But then there was another. And another...
The sharp, fizzy sensation on her tongue was addictive, and the warmth that spread through her chest made her feel fearless, even free.
"See? Isn’t this better?" Sana said, leaning close so Eira could hear her over the noise.
Eira nodded, her steps felt slightly looser now.
She giggled as Sana twirled her again, almost stumbling but catching herself. "You were right!" she yelled back. "This is fun!"
They danced for what felt like hours, pausing only when Eira wanted another drink.
By her third, the room started to blur around the edges, and her laughter came easier, more uncontrollable.
"Eira, you okay?" Sana asked, placing a hand on her arm.
Eira waved her off, her lips tugged into a lazy smile. "I’m fine, Sana. Just... tipsy. Let’s keep dancing!"
But soon, nature called.
Eira excused herself, weaving through the crowd toward the restroom.
"I will come with you."
"N-no, I will be back in less than a minute."
She felt the room tilt slightly under her feet, but she gripped the wall for balance, giggling at her own unsteady steps.
When she reached the restroom’s hallway, a hand grabbed her arm.
"Hey, baby."
Eira turned, blinking to focus on the man from earlier—the one who’d asked her to dance.
"I told you no," she said, her words slurred slightly but her tone firm.
"Oh, come on," he said, his grin oily. "You look like you’re having fun. Let’s have some fun together."
Eira yanked her arm back, anger rushed through the haze of alcohol. "I said no! Leave me alone!"
"You think you can talk to me like that?"
Without thinking, Eira raised her hand and slapped him across the face.
The man’s head snapped to the side, and when he turned back, his eyes seemed to stop blinking. "You little—"
He raised his hand as if to hit her back, but before he could, another hand shot out, gripping his wrist tightly.
"That’s enough," a deep, calm voice said.
Eira blinked, trying to focus on the man who had appeared seemingly out of nowhere.
He was tall, with short dark hair and strikingly blue eyes that seemed to glow even in the dim light.
"This has nothing to do with you!" the aggressor snapped, trying to pull his arm free.
"It does now," the stranger replied coolly. His grip tightened, and the man winced. "Walk away before you regret it."
The aggressor hesitated, his eyes darting between Eira and the stranger.
Finally, with a muttered curse, he yanked his arm free and stalked off into the crowd.
Eira staggered slightly, her balance thrown off by the commotion.
"You shouldn’t be here alone," the stranger said, his voice quieter now.
He reached out, steadying her by the shoulder. "William failed to watch after my little sister. Typical."
Eira frowned, her head spinned too much to make sense of his words. "What... what are you talking about?"
Before the stranger could respond, another presence made itself known.
"Get your hands off her."
Eira looked up to see Callian standing a few feet away, his glare cold enough to freeze the stranger in place.
The stranger released Eira and stepped back, a faint smirk played on his lips. "She’s lucky you showed up. Take better care of her."
Callian didn’t respond, his eyes focused as the stranger disappeared into the crowd.
"Who was that?" Eira mumbled, leaning heavily against Callian.
"No one you need to worry about," he said firmly, his face turned gentler as he turned to her. "Let’s get you out of here."
Before she could protest, Callian scooped her up effortlessly, carrying her through the club like she weighed nothing.
"Callian," she mumbled, her head resting against his chest. "You’re mad at me, aren’t you?"
He glanced down at her. "We’ll talk about it later."
They reached the VIP section, where Sana was already lounging on a plush sofa next to Rylan.
"What happened?" Sana asked, sitting up as she saw them approach.
"She drank too much," Callian said flatly, lowering Eira onto the couch.
Sana winced. "I didn’t mean for her to—"
"Save it," Callian interrupted. "She’s fine. Just keep her company while I handle something."
Rylan raised an eyebrow but said nothing, watching as Callian walked away.
Eira blinked up at Sana. "I’m fine," she said, her words slurred.
Sana laughed softly. "You’re a mess, but it’s okay. That’s what friends are for."
Eira smiled, sinking deeper into the couch as the noise of the club faded around her.
When Callian returned, being more calmer, though his eyes still held a storm.
He knelt in front of Eira, brushing a strand of hair from her face. "Eira, you scared me," he admitted quietly.
She blinked at him, her mind too foggy to process his words. "Scared you? Why?"
"Because you’re... important to me..."
Eira smiled lazily, reaching out to touch his cheek. "You’re important to me too, Callian. Always."
He closed his eyes briefly, exhaling as if to steady himself. "Let’s go home," he said finally.
Eira nodded, letting him lift her once again. As they made their way out of the club, she rested her head against his shoulder, feeling safe despite the crazy night.
Callian glanced down at her. "You’ll be the death of me, Eira," he muttered, though his hold on her tightened just slightly.
Eira smiled faintly, her eyes fluttering shut.
She didn’t hear the whispers around them, didn’t see the curious gazes that followed their exit.
All she felt was the steady rhythm of Callian’s heartbeat beneath her ear.
And for the first time in a long while, she felt like everything might just be okay.
"No more alcohol for you, Mrs. Reed."
