Chapter 95: Chapter 94: No Change

Wilderness World, Market Hut.

"It actually didn’t change."

Cheng Zongyang’s face was a mask of confusion. The acquisition tab, which had already refreshed its quests, hadn’t disappeared or been altered. The Points on the quest tab were also unchanged, and the item tab had simply spawned a new item as usual.

’Are the items that appear really random? But this is too much of a coincidence,’ Cheng Zongyang muttered.

’Can’t it even change the acquisition tab? Even just making it a portable acquisition function would be fine. Otherwise, hauling things back and forth is a real waste of time.’

Cheng Zongyang grumbled but didn’t waste any more time agonizing over something he couldn’t get an answer to.

As he’d said before, regardless of whether it was sentient or not, it was still beneficial to him.

He then turned his attention to the newly spawned item.

——

"Another modern item." Cheng Zongyang looked at the wall clock in the item tab with a deep sense of nostalgia.

The cost was low. He glanced at his Points balance.

——Points: 153

He had 190 Points before buying the Wilderness Beans, which left him with 140. He’d spent the rest of the night hunting, barely scraping together another 13 Points.

It just went to show how inefficient hunting was in the pitch-black of night with no light source.

’I won’t buy it for now. The main goal is the two medicinal formulas. Besides, I’m already used to telling time by the sun and moon. Or just letting it pass in a blur.’

Next, he looked at the quest tab. Since he hadn’t accepted any in a while, they had long since been replaced.

Right now, his personal quest log only held two long-term quests.

The first was to collect Wolf Hide. The second, Red Ore.

He continued to look at the quest tab.

’Is whoever posted this quest out of their mind? Last time a Tiger Hide was thirty Points, and now it’s a hundred?’

Looking at the four brand-new quests, Cheng Zongyang was left speechless by the entry for Tiger Hide.

But the reward was high this time, so he accepted the quests to acquire Tiger Hide and Centennial Ginseng first.

The Point rewards for both quests were quite high, making them worth his while. He could obtain the items and hold onto them, selling them for a quick influx of Points whenever necessary.

As they were long-term quests, he could use them to earn Points indefinitely as long as he didn’t actively abandon them.

As for the Wolf King’s Heart Blood and Bear Gall, he ignored them for the time being.

Finally, he glanced at the acquisition tab again.

It too had long since refreshed, replaced with ten new creatures from land, sea, and air.

It was just that the Points offered were still pitifully low.

’Speaking of which, could another Stone Ring owner be the one acquiring things? Or maybe multiple merchants from other worlds are posting these quests, which would explain the different Point values?’

Having read so many novels in his past life, his train of thought wasn’t exactly normal. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have thought to drip blood on a special item he picked up after crossing over to this world. And that was how he had obtained the Stone Ring.

He didn’t dwell on it. He changed into his exploration gear, grabbed his wicker basket, a few Weapons, and some food, then left the hut and headed for the mountain forest to the east.

The only ways to quickly earn more Points were to hunt large creatures and search for precious Medicinal Materials.

The Points obtained from hunting were calculated based on the amount of Energy a creature provided per unit.

For the same unit of Weight, the Energy provided by a chicken and a sika deer wasn’t much different, so the Points gained would be the same.

Therefore, generally speaking, hunting larger creatures yielded more Points than smaller ones.

Of course, a more efficient way to earn Points was to find precious Medicinal Materials.

’Otherwise, with the two formulas costing several hundred Points, how many creatures would he have to kill?’

’I saw tracks left by a wolf pack to the east when I was fetching water earlier. Maybe I can try my luck over there.’

Cheng Zongyang headed straight east, planning to go up into the mountains if he found nothing.

He was still thinking about that Black-Horned Python from before.

’That giant python brought me a handsome profit. Maybe there’s something else up on the mountain.’

To get more Points, he didn’t pass up any of the small animals he encountered along the way.

Every little bit helped, and that was how he had built up his reserves.

At the same time, he carefully scanned the ground for any valuable Medicinal Materials.

Thanks to his second uncle, he knew a fair bit about Medicinal Materials.

The journey yielded no great rewards, and he soon arrived at the bank of a stream.

Looking at the rushing water, an idea sparked in Cheng Zongyang’s mind.

’Although the Points for some of the larger creatures on the acquisition tab are low, the rewards for fish aren’t bad. It’s at least one Point per kilogram.’

’If I build some kind of weir or fence, I could probably catch a lot of fish.’

With this in mind, he took the Firewood Knife from his basket and headed upstream.

From his last patrol of the area, he remembered where to find certain conspicuous resources.

Bamboo had many uses, a fact he had naturally committed to memory.

A short while later, he returned, hauling three long bamboo poles, each as thick as his arm.

Most of the villagers knew some basic, rough weaving techniques.

Of course, this was limited to creating functional items, nothing exquisite or beautiful. His craftsmanship wasn’t nearly good enough to sell.

Cheng Zongyang’s standards weren’t high; as long as it could stop the large fish, it was good enough.

Half an hour later, a five-meter-long wall woven from bamboo strips was complete. The gaps were two to three centimeters wide; it was a passable job, at best.

He dragged the bamboo wall, which was about sixty to seventy centimeters high, to the edge of the stream.

He drove the ends into the streambed near each bank and used more bamboo poles to brace both sides of the wall, preventing it from being knocked over by the current or by fish.

With the ends curved slightly inward and the wall supported by three poles on the front and four on the back, it was now quite sturdy.

As long as no large creatures came to destroy it, this wall, firmly planted in the streambed, wouldn’t be toppled by any school of fish, no matter how large.

The gaps in the wall were rather large, allowing small fish and shrimp to pass through freely.

With the wall finished, Cheng Zongyang didn’t just sit and wait. He took several squirrels from his basket, gutted them, and hung them from the trunks of a few different trees.

He hoped to use the scent of blood to lure in some animals.

Since he had seen a wolf here before and later found the tracks of a pack, this area was likely part of their hunting grounds. And sometimes, wolves also preyed on fish.

The spreading scent should be able to attract some creatures.

After setting the bait, Cheng Zongyang resumed his search for any potential Medicinal Materials in the vicinity.

The forest was indeed rich with Medicinal Materials.

In just a short time, he spotted numerous Medicinal Materials within a radius of one or two hundred meters.

Notoginseng, Astragalus Root, Dendrobium, Purple Reishi Mushroom, and more.

He ignored the common ones, searching only for the most valuable.

He picked only a portion of these, placing them in his basket. He would see if the Market Hut would buy them when he got back.

RUSTLE RUSTLE RUSTLE!

Suddenly, the faint sound of footsteps on dry leaves came from behind him.

Cheng Zongyang, who had excellent hearing, whipped his head around to see a gray wolf at the bottom of the slope, wading across the stream to stop beneath one of the trees.

A flicker of joy crossed Cheng Zongyang’s face. He remained perfectly still, his eyes locked on the gray wolf.

The gray wolf circled under the tree but didn’t approach. It sniffed the air continuously, its head swiveling left and right as if observing its surroundings.

Cheng Zongyang didn’t move, simply letting the wolf observe and sniff the scent of blood.

Slowly, it drew closer to the tree and licked at the blood dripping down the bark. Its head shot up, and it saw the squirrel pinned to the tree about a meter off the ground.

Its naturally cautious and suspicious wolf-like nature made it wary once more.

It sniffed the air repeatedly. Finally, it reared up on its hind legs, hooked its claws into the trunk, and with a leap, stretched its neck to bite the squirrel pinned by the branch. The branch came loose and fell along with the meat.

The squirrel wasn’t large; the wolf swallowed it in two bites. It licked its chops and continued to survey the area.

Seeing no signs of danger, it followed the scent, intending to move on to the second tree.

But the next moment, it froze. Its head whipped around, looking back toward the opposite bank. Then, with a nimble turn, its body shot back the way it came.

This scene left Cheng Zongyang, who had been about to make his move, somewhat confused.

’What the?’

’Did its mom call it home for dinner?’

Seeing the wolf disappear from view, Cheng Zongyang frowned. He stood up, placed the small Purple Reishi Mushroom he’d just picked into his basket, and began to circle around to a different position.

Canines have incredibly sensitive noses; they will be alerted by the slightest unfamiliar scent.

He had rubbed the squirrels with grass juice before placing them to mask some of his scent. That was why the wolf’s guard had been lowered enough for it to eat the bait.

’If I hadn’t run out of Sedative, I could have used a baited trap. The efficiency is pretty high. I’ll have to get Second Uncle to mix some more powder for me later. It could be useful for both self-defense and hunting.’

Cheng Zongyang mused to himself. As far as he was concerned, any item that could save his life or increase his efficiency was worth preparing.

He circled around to a downwind position, set down his basket, and placed his Long Saber and other items inside. He shouldered his Quiver, fastened a dagger and the Bone-Cutting Knife to his waist, then took out his Bow and Arrow and hid behind a tree to wait.

Wolves are suspicious by nature, but they are also greedy.

’Knowing there’s a free meal waiting, that wolf should be back.’

’Even if it doesn’t return, it doesn’t matter. My main source of Points today should be from the fish trap anyway.’
