Chapter 96: Chapter 95: The Abnormal Wolf King

The wolves returned.

But their numbers were far beyond what Cheng Zongyang had expected.

It only took a few minutes for that wolf to appear on the opposite bank and begin wading across the river.

But a whole pack followed behind it.

The sight left Cheng Zongyang stunned. He quickly ducked behind a tree and started counting.

Thirteen in all!

One of them, however, stood out. Its fur was a grayish-white, several shades brighter than the rest, and its frame was taller and more muscular. Its eyes were chillingly cold, and a tuft of pure white fur on its forehead gave it a majestic, imposing air.

’Is that the Wolf King?’

Cheng Zongyang’s heart lurched. He felt there was something off about this wolf.

It was vastly different from the wolves surrounding it.

It differed in both physique and appearance.

It looked more like an evolved wolf—more striking and powerful, a far cry from the drab appearance of the other gray wolves.

’What breed of wolf is this?’ Cheng Zongyang wondered.

But he had no intention of letting this pack pass him by.

The gray wolves gathered beneath the trees where their packmates had died, scanning the area. They sniffed at the bloodstains on the trunks, letting out low whines as if communicating.

The Wolf King, however, remained motionless. It merely lifted its head slightly and twitched its nose.

It seemed to be trying to catch a different scent in the air.

But it was upwind, while Cheng Zongyang was downwind. The mountain breeze blew his scent away from them.

Cheng Zongyang didn’t wait. While the wolves were on alert, he swiftly drew his bow and nocked an arrow.

Since becoming an Entry Grade Martial Artist, his Power had increased tremendously. He could now draw this Ironwood Bow with ease, unlike before, when he would have needed to rest after just ten pulls.

The bowstring was drawn taut like a full moon as Cheng Zongyang locked his sights on the Wolf King.

Even from over a hundred meters away, the shot would be lethal from this position. With eyes like a hawk, he locked onto his target’s neck.

Then, he slowly lowered his aim from its neck to its abdomen.

WHOOSH! In an instant, with a shudder of the bowstring, the Ironwood Arrow shot out like a crimson meteor, its piercing whistle echoing through the forest!

Incredibly alert, the Wolf King instantly sensed the danger and dropped to the ground.

THWACK!

The arrow missed the Wolf King, instead striking another gray wolf right in the neck!

The sheer force and momentum of the arrow sent the collateral victim flying. It staggered a few steps before crashing to the ground.

Only the fletching and about a third of the shaft remained. The rest of the arrow had gone clean through its body!

"AWOOOO!" The Wolf King shot to its feet with a roar, its gaze instantly locking onto Cheng Zongyang’s position.

In that same instant, the other eleven gray wolves snapped to attention, baring their fangs and letting out low growls.

Furious, the Wolf King was the first to charge at Cheng Zongyang. Its body, as large as a calf’s, moved with incredible agility. The other gray wolves fanned out to the left and right, following their king in a clear pincer formation!

Seeing this, Cheng Zongyang showed no fear. He aimed the arrow he had already nocked, leading one of the charging gray wolves.

THWACK! The arrow struck the running wolf in the abdomen. It collapsed on the spot, tumbling head over heels.

Cheng Zongyang spun around and immediately began retreating toward the cabin, but he didn’t stop shooting!

Since the Wolf King had been alert enough to dodge his first shot, he switched his targets to the gray wolves instead.

As he ran, the gray wolves trying to encircle him became his moving targets.

One, two, three!

Some of the gray wolves reacted with lightning speed, but others were always a beat too slow.

Cheng Zongyang’s pace was quick, but the need to keep shooting slowed him down, and the lightning-fast Wolf King, which was practically leaping as it ran, caught up to him.

Cheng Zongyang watched as the grayish-white Wolf King soared over his head and landed in front of him. Its claws dug into the dirt, gouging out four deep furrows as it blocked his path.

It was as if it knew that the wooden cabin was this two-legged beast’s lair!

The Wolf King didn’t pause for a second. Kicking off with all four paws, it swiped at Cheng Zongyang with blinding speed!

Blocked by the Wolf King, Cheng Zongyang decisively dropped his Bow and Arrow and drew the dagger from his waist with his right hand!

As the Wolf King launched its swift, decisive attack, a massive paw like a tiger’s swiping toward him, Cheng Zongyang’s Power surged. He gripped his dagger tightly and thrust it upward to intercept the blow!

If they clashed, the wolf’s paw would be maimed!

ROAR!!

Suddenly, the Wolf King opened its blood-red maw and let out a ferocious roar!

The sound was like thunder, absolutely deafening. It felt like a thunderclap had exploded in his mind. In an instant, Cheng Zongyang felt dizzy and his vision went dark.

Immediately after, a tremendous force slammed into his left shoulder. As a wave of pain washed over him, he was sent flying, tumbling uncontrollably until a large tree brought him to an abrupt stop.

By then, Cheng Zongyang had recovered his senses slightly, only to be assaulted by a sharp, debilitating pain in his left shoulder. All the strength had gone out of it.

At the same time, his Explorer Suit was ripped open from shoulder to chest with three long gashes, revealing the Python Armor underneath, its surface also scarred.

"AWOOO!!"

The Wolf King clearly wasn’t giving Cheng Zongyang a chance to catch his breath. With another roar, it ordered the other gray wolves to attack.

The Wolf King watched coldly from the side. It was furious that this two-legged beast had dared to attack it.

Cheng Zongyang’s brow furrowed as he looked toward the marketplace cabin, still about a hundred meters away.

Fighting through the pain in his left arm, he suddenly lunged forward, grabbing the fur on the head of a gray wolf as it snapped at his ankle. His right hand, holding the dagger, plunged it deep into the wolf’s neck!

The wolf yelped in pain and struggled frantically. Just then, a second wolf charged in, clamped its jaws onto Cheng Zongyang’s right elbow, and began thrashing its head from side to side.

Cheng Zongyang let go of the wolf he’d stabbed. Gritting his teeth against the pain of fangs piercing his Explorer Suit, he snapped his right arm inward, trapping the second wolf’s head in the crook of his elbow.

The next second, he used the trapped wolf’s weight to haul himself to his feet, his back against a tree. He then kicked out, sending another wolf that was snapping at his thigh flying. The beast whimpered as it rolled several meters, then scrambled unsteadily back to its paws.

The instant he kicked the wolf away, Cheng Zongyang passed the dagger to his left hand. He brutally stabbed it into the belly of the wolf trapped in his right arm, then sliced downward.

Its guts spilled out in a gruesome cascade, spraying blood everywhere!

The gray wolf convulsed for a few moments, then went still.

SLAM!

He grabbed the dead wolf and slammed its corpse onto the ground.

For a moment, the remaining five wolves were stunned by the display. They instinctively took a few steps back, but continued to stare at Cheng Zongyang, teeth bared.

The Wolf King, however, was completely unmoved. Seeing that its underlings couldn’t wear down this two-legged beast, it charged in to attack itself.

Having gained a moment’s respite, Cheng Zongyang saw the Wolf King charging in person. He seized the opportunity, rolling on the ground to dodge the direct impact, then gritted his teeth and sprinted for the marketplace cabin.

Less than fifty meters. He was so close!

But when he had less than twenty meters to go, another roar, loud enough to shatter stone, erupted from behind him.

"AWOOOO!!!"

Suddenly, Cheng Zongyang’s head throbbed with pain again, and he nearly collapsed. He immediately bit the tip of his tongue, using the sharp sting to snap his mind back to focus. But in that slowed moment, the Wolf King struck again, sending him flying.

’Son of a bitch, what the hell is this thing?! It can even use a sonic attack?!’

As he rolled across the ground, Cheng Zongyang inwardly cursed the unnatural Wolf King. Forcing himself to stop, he endured the pain in his back and scrambled to his feet, half-running and half-crawling. He was dizzy and disoriented, but he forced himself to run forward again.

The Wolf King watched the two-legged beast, who seemed determined to reach its lair even in death, with a mocking look in its eyes. It leaped and landed right in front of him.

As it raised a paw to swat him away, it suddenly saw something flying toward it.

The Wolf King paused. Naturally cautious, it chose to dodge.

That brief delay was all Cheng Zongyang needed. He jumped over the guardrail, rolled once on the ground, and scrambled wretchedly into the marketplace cabin.

Feeling that it had been tricked, the Wolf King flew into another rage. It jumped over the guardrail and began slamming itself against the small cabin.

Although it hated the smell coming from the guardrail, its prey had escaped into its lair and made a fool of it in the process. It was furious!

ROAR!!

It let out another bestial roar at the cabin.

Outside the guardrail, the five gray wolves couldn’t stand the smell emanating from the wood and didn’t dare get any closer. They just paced back and forth, looking anxious.

After another roar, the Wolf King slammed its paw against the cabin door! But the small structure was completely undamaged.

But the next moment, the door opened again. A recovered Cheng Zongyang stared at the Wolf King, which had taken a few steps back, his gaze bone-chilling.

"So you’re an Exotic Beast!"

Cheng Zongyang held a new Firewood Knife, and a new dagger was tucked into his belt.

He then put a small Ginseng Root into his mouth and began to chew!

Instantly, a surge of pure Energy flooded him, invigorating his mind!

The next moment, he charged toward the Wolf King, knife in hand!

"On my own turf, you think I’m gonna let you push me around?!"
