Mated To The Demon Prince-Chapter 48: Tensed
Evangeline ate and smiled at everyone like nothing happened. She wasn’t sure if grandmother supreme intended to expose who she was, but with the look on everyone’s faces...her secret was still safe. As long as she succeeds in her task when the time comes and keeps to her promise, she should be able to remain on her grandmother’s side until her time is through.
The woman literally has her in the palm of her hands. She knows her secrets and was ready to give her a condition for her to fulfill to be accepted by her. Not to talk of what she does would affect whether she would still be a faithful disciple to a God she has so many things to say to.
Maybe one of these days, she would ask Layla and Sisi to take her to that moon temple.
The table was lively as usual. She stole the shine at the table as everyone ensured she was properly fed. Her three brothers sitting beside their father as expected were hoping she choked on her meal and finally be out of their way for good.
’’Your grandmother said you paid her a visit today.’’
She stiffened when her mother asked while refilling her glass with more ice water. She stared at her mom sheepishly, who had a proud smile on her face.
Her mom reached out to gently brush down some of her hair and said, ’’It’s nice hearing you still put family first above every other thing in your life, my dear. She said she was pleased to see you and hope you still remembered the promise you made to her?’’
She didn’t know her heart was this sensitive when it skipped a beat at the thought of that woman aiming to use her mother to watch her every move.
’’Ah, y–yes... I still...do.’’
The feel of ice water on her tongue was meant to be refreshing and calming, but somehow she was experiencing difficulty in swallowing it down. Her mother was just staring deeply at her in thought. She was glad her mom wasn’t those nosy mothers that would want to know every single thing about her life. What would she tell her if she asked what her promise to her grandmother was about?
She slowly returned her cup of ice water to the table and turned away.
How that woman was able to know she wasn’t Evangeline was admirable. Her detective skills were over the roof.
’’Don’t you like the food we prepared, my love? Should I ask them to cook something else that you might like?’’
She faced her mom again with a small smile and shook her head. If she would rather not start raising the suspicions of everyone else at the table, she should start forcing this meal down her throat.
She was almost done with eating the delicious whole chicken soup they made just for her when the doors to the dining room burst open and three wolf guards she had been told by Vesta were trained protectors and warriors of Astoria marched in. This seemed to gain the attention of her dad who had been sitting beside their mother in deep thoughts.
He was sipping on a royal goblet of wine, refusing to eat any other thing apart from that.
The wolf guards paused not too far from him before bowing their heads down in respect. Their presence seemed to make many other people on the table nervous. Everyone stopped whatever they were doing to figure out why the wolf guards interrupted the royal family dinner.
Even Evangeline was curious to know the reason behind the anxious and tense look on their faces.
The Alpha King turned and asked them what the matter was.
The leader of the three fall on his knees beside the Alpha King.
’’Forgive me, King Alpha, but the wolf guards we sent to protect the northern district of the ice wall has just sent us a message that hundreds of demons has interfered with a part of the ice wall and are now reigning terror on the packs that live there!’’
The sound of someone letting their cup fall on the table could be heard as the tension in the room ceased their breaths and quickened their heart beats. No one said a word but stared at the wolf guards in terror.
’’Also,’’ the one relaying the message to the Alpha King lowered his head a bit and continued in a more somber voice. ’’There are sightings of an entity we want to assume is the Demon Prince.’’
The Alpha King rose to his feet, almost knocking off his chair in the process. One look at her brothers had them all standing to their feet as well.
The Demon Prince?
Evangeline’s eyes moved left and right like the wind as her father’s voice boomed all over the room barking out orders to the wolf guards as more stormed in, ready to swing into action and follow as the Alpha King leads.
Evangeline pushed her chair backwards and rose to her feet.
The Demon Prince.
If he is my destiny, I would also like to see him to prepare myself and know who I have been cursed to deal with.
’’I am coming to...’’
That returned all attention to her again. Even her father, currently getting geared up for battle, turned to her.
’’Evangeline, no. It’s too dangerous,’’ her mother began, trying to talk her out of this. Zayne only threw her a look of disgust as he also prepared himself. She turned to her mother and said, ’’I thought beheading the demon prince was my purpose. If I don’t introduce myself to him now, then when will I have the chance?’’
Layla could be seen running off from the dining room before returning with her sword and bringing it to her side.
Charlotte would have thought she was on drugs because her decision at this table tonight looked so much like she was on a suicidal mission. She wasn’t the strong warrior princess that had outstanding martial skills and all!
It would only take three seconds on the battlegrounds for a demon to claim her head. But she had been more confident in the spirit of strength that randomly possessed her whenever she was against someone. She might not die quickly.
If this was going to be her life from now on, she better start getting used to it.
Her mother had more things to say to her to stop her from going...but eventually she just had to let go.
Evangeline held on to her sword, and the logical part of her brain was screaming at her to stop. Yes, she was meant to be strong and be an inspiration to others, but not to the point of throwing herself willingly into the arms of death!
Her father gave her a simple nod of approval the moment his royal cape was placed around his shoulders. And for the first time, she found herself standing before her father. The Alpha King.
Her racing heart stilled along with her hyper nerves when he cupped her face gently.
’’Stay behind me at all times.’’
She stared at her father for the longest of times before nodding her head that she would. He let go and began to lead them out of the dining room. One last look at her mother told her she wasn’t happy about this.
Well, she wasn’t happy about this either.
Don’t worry, we can do this. Vesta said encouragingly in her head.
