Chapter 202: Pregnant?

Fiona had just woken up to the light glare of the sun on her face. Her body felt a bit weaker, but she simply smiled in response as she rubbed the sleep out of her eyes and turned to the side. A frown appeared on her face when she realized that not only was the other side of the bed empty, but it also seemed like it hadn’t been slept in at all.

Propping herself up, she looked around, only for a sliver of a smile to reappear on her face as she noticed a bouquet of flowers in a jar—more than a hundred white roses. Fiona instantly pushed off the bedsheet and strode barefoot toward it, her smile growing bigger as she picked up the note and read what was written on it in fine, legible handwriting.

"I hope you enjoyed last night as much as I did. Had to leave... will be back soon!" Her smile widened as she read each word before placing the note back on the table. She bent down to smell the roses, a glimmer of excitement in her eyes.

Never had she been courted before or even received roses, and she couldn’t help but beam as she realized that instead of running and chasing after a man who would rather kill her, wasn’t it better to stay with one who showed her immense love and care instead?

For the first time, she didn’t care whether or not she got pregnant, realizing that it would be the best result. Father wants a child from Cain... but what difference does it make if it’s William instead? she thought to herself as she jumped into the bathroom and got ready.

She dressed quickly in a pair of pants and a top, a departure from her usual girly style, but something she didn’t mind. She pulled her long hair into a ponytail and headed out with a smile on her face, greeted by all the servants who addressed her gently, making her feel right at home. She made her way to the dining table on the first floor, where she would be attended to.

But she had just arrived when she almost froze, spotting Fervor, William’s assistant, whom she despised with all her being. It was his cold and aloof posture and eyes that both pissed her off and terrified her at the same time. He looked at her like she was nothing—nothing but air. Fiona felt she would even feel something if he looked at her with displeasure. Instead, she watched him walk by her without so much as acknowledging her presence.

Fiona turned her gaze away, intent on not doing the same, as she mumbled under her breath, What the hell is he feeling like?

Yes, he was dashingly handsome, with brown hair and dark brown eyes that almost looked black. He was tall, with broad shoulders that made him look even bigger the longer she stared at him. But his expressions were always so robotic and blank that he almost felt unreal—like there was something inhuman about him.

"Of all people... William just had to have him!" she muttered, unable to figure out how someone could become so cold. But she had just mumbled to herself when the maid behind her, who attended to her, whispered in a conspiratorial tone.

"Fervor was a runt! He was abused and tortured by his parents before he ran away and was taken in by Lord William’s parents," the maid whispered in Fiona’s ear. Fiona was astounded by what she heard as she moved to sit down, sending the maid off to get the chef who would take her orders.

She could have eaten in her room, but she much preferred the large dining room, already imagining how nice it would be to live with William rather than back at her father’s place, where she wasn’t allowed to be herself and could only do as she was told—eat what she was told, say what she was told, and act as she was told.

Yes, you adopted me, and I’m grateful, but haven’t I done enough? she thought, wishing she would never have to go back. But then she remembered William’s bouts of weakness, which had been getting worse.

He needs the antidote! she realized, knowing she might have to go back one more time to get it, even if she wasn’t sure how she would do that yet.

The more she thought about it, the more worried she became, until she finally decided to put it all behind her. She watched as the servants streamed in with huge platters of food, which made her belly rumble in delight. They placed the dishes on the table one after the other, opening them for her to marvel at both the sight and the smell.

Quickly, Fiona pointed at which platters she wanted a piece of, focusing more on the soups and the chicken, along with a bit of vegetables, carrots, and some fruits she liked. She picked up her fork to take some berries, biting into them and swallowing with relish.

But she had just focused on the chicken soup, having taken a few spoonfuls, when her stomach suddenly rumbled in a not-so-pleasant way. She flew off her chair, running straight for the closest sink, which wasn’t too far away behind a separate door next to the dining area.

Bending her head over it, she threw up everything she had eaten as a strong feeling of nausea suddenly overwhelmed her. She continued until nothing remained in her stomach, and still, she felt like throwing up as she rested her entire body weakly against the sink.

"Lady Fiona!" her maid shouted, running after her and making sure she didn’t crumble to the floor. "Are you alright?" she asked. Fiona would have definitely snapped back that she wasn’t if she could, but her eyes darkened in anger as she continued to rest against the sink before weakly getting up.

"Maybe it’s something I ate..." Fiona thought in confusion, wondering if it was the berries. She bent back down to rinse her mouth out, intending to wait a while before returning to try something else.

But when she returned, she backed away from the full table the moment she got close. The nausea only worsened the closer she got to the different smells that she had once marveled at but now only made her feel like she would vomit her intestines out.

"Maybe it’s a stomach bug..." she muttered again to herself, glancing at her maid, only to see her beam with an excited look on her face.

"May-maybe it’s not!" the maid stammered with unbridled excitement. "Maybe you’re pregnant!" she beamed with innocent eyes. Fiona’s eyes widened completely in shock and astonishment, which she struggled to hide as different waves of emotions washed over her.

Before, her first thought would have been to get rid of it, but now, all she wanted to do was confirm it and share the news with William. She imagined just how happy he would be to hear it, a small smile flickering on her face as she tried to appear neutral.

I, too, can have a love that belongs solely to me! she thought to herself as she immediately turned back to the maid and secretly told her to head out and get a test kit. She felt herself become giddy with anticipation.
