Chapter 69: The Council Meets

"I’m glad we had this talk!" Cain said, sliding his hand off his neck as he settled back into his chair, Grainger straightening up even as his guard, who had already gotten back up on his feet, hurriedly stretched out a handkerchief to him for him to wipe his face as his injuries healed.

Bella would rather be damned than allow herself to be seen as weak, as she immediately moved back to her seat and sat down on her chair, even as Drey, her guard, lowered and holstered his gun back to his waist, wanting to look at Cain but knowing better than to do something so stupid.

A few seconds had just passed after they were all seated, with Grainger wiping his face, when the door was pushed open, and another lord walked right in as she closed the door gently behind her.

She had just closed the door when she froze in front of it, a frown on her face as her gaze slowly settled on Grainger and the blood streaks he was still wiping off his face.

"Damn!!! I came too late, didn’t I?" she excitedly said as she slowly moved to sit opposite from where Grainger and Cain sat and right next to Bella, who nodded her head in greeting the second she laid eyes on the woman who had a middle-aged look to her and nodded back at Bella.

"It doesn’t look that bad, though! I expected more!" she said as she settled in her chair and got a good look at Grainger’s face and the dent on the table, her eyes shifting to fix directly on Cain, who glanced at her before shifting his gaze away out of boredom.

"Tell me you at least fought—"

"Shut up, Harriet!" Grainger barked out in anger, even as he willed his face to hurriedly heal before the others arrived, even if he couldn’t fix the massive dent on the table.

"That would be Lord Harriet to you!" she responded, beaming, only for the door to be pushed open again as a much younger man stepped in. He looked extremely tired as he moved to sit down on one of the two empty chairs, almost like someone who had been seriously deprived of sleep.

Without paying anyone or anything any attention whatsoever, he sat on his chair and placed his head on the table before dozing off. His snores were loud, which was shocking considering how quickly it happened.

"If only all of us could be as clueless as Lord William over there!" Harriet sighed, relieved that the tension that had filled the air had been somewhat reduced, considering the fact that she might look carefree but was just as wary of Cain as everyone else there.

’One would think that together we could take him, but they would be wrong. The Bavellis have always ruled for a reason, and this one in particular is a monster!’ she thought to herself just as the door swung open and someone new walked in, closing the door behind him.

"The meeting is yet to start, and already I smell blood?" he said, his eyes moving around until they landed right on Grainger and the huge and bloody dent on the side of the table he sat on.

His face had already completely healed, but the evidence remained.

"You should sit, Lord Magnus, instead of commenting on things you know nothing about!" Harriet snapped in a way that showed that the both of them weren’t friends and couldn’t even be said to be on good terms.

Magnus simply shook his head, even as he continued to stand in the same spot he stood without moving.

The only spaces that were left were right beside Cain and the one that Eldric always chose to sit on. He was yet to pick a side, and openly opposing Eldric would be a foolish thing to do, but at the same time, Cain...

Unable to allow himself to look weak, Magnus slowly and confidently moved closer to the seat beside Cain and sat down after gesturing for his guard to dive in the second something went wrong.

"You seem awfully twitchy, Lord Magnus!" Cain commented the second Magnus sat down, to which Magnus immediately plastered a fake smile on his face, one that almost seemed too fake.

"I can assure you, Lord Cain, I’ve never been more calm!" His gaze was extremely wary as he said it. His gaze was forward, but his entire focus was on Cain, intent on reacting quickly enough the second Cain so much as moved excessively toward him.

But the thought had just fully settled in his mind when everyone in the room suddenly heard the door into the hall be pushed open again to reveal Eldric, the only person yet to arrive, who always saw a need to arrive late, almost as if to make a statement.

"The smell of blood!" he noted, just like Magnus had done, his gaze boldly and calmly scanning the room, a surprised smile blossoming on his face when he identified the victim a second later.

"As long as everything is civil!" he sighed as he settled into the only seat left to him to sit in.

"You’re not the boss of us, Eldric, stop pretending like it!" Harriet said, with Magnus agreeing with a nod of his head, even as Eldric also responded with a light nod.

"Apologies, it’s a habit I’m used to," he said, just before he continued to speak like a boss would, "...since we’re all here, we might as well address the matter we all gathered for!"

"Vampires!" Eldric said with an exaggerated sigh.

"The truce is supposed to keep the peace, but I fear that they might be becoming more of a menace than we previously thought!" Eldric said as he continued speaking.

"Just recently, it seems like Cain’s district and Grainger’s district were attacked with a lot of werewolf casualties! We need to conjure up a plan to make them see us as more of a threat!" Eldric boldly announced.

"...so what exactly are you trying to propose?" Lord William spoke up in a low tone after a huge yawn as he suddenly raised his head in a way that made it difficult for anyone to believe that he had actually been asleep.

Bella didn’t speak but instead nodded her head in agreement as she internally wondered what Eldric’s plan truly entailed, having gotten enough warnings from her father to know just how dangerous he was and how far she had to go to avoid him.
