MMORPG: War God, You are Invincible Again-Chapter 588 - 76: Hostilities Resume
Chapter 588: Chapter 76: Hostilities Resume
An hour later, Barre’s resistance grew weaker and weaker, until finally, there was no movement within the military base.
Wu Jiang left the mountain summit contentedly. From now on, the million-strong orc army was under his control.
Xie’an entered the command post, where Wu Jiang’s military deployment map was left behind. The Demon Abyss was very long and narrow, and the military base served as the only entrance to it. The mountains on either side had a very peculiar environment that could naturally drain the magic power from climbers’ bodies. It was relying on these mountains that the orc army, with their own strong physiques, managed to cross the base and caught the empire off-guard. Eventually, they attacked from both sides and captured it.
Now that Xie’an had retaken the base, he had effectively seized control of the only passage out of the Demon Abyss. This time, Xie’an would not make the same elementary mistake as the Demon Slayer and Demon Hunter legions had before, allowing the orc army to escape through the mountains on both sides.
With the vanguard successful, Marshal Xie’an immediately ordered the allied armies to set out and launched a general assault on the orc army entrenched in the Demon Abyss.
Wu Jiang naturally did not fear war and saw this battle as an opportunity to deal with Barre’s personal troops.
Due to the narrow stretch of the Demon Abyss, the million-strong armies on both sides could not spread out into proper formations. The fight was like two groups battling in a corridor, where only after the ones at the very front fell could those behind them take their place and join the fray.
And such battlefield conditions seemed to be somewhat more advantageous for the human race. Their long-range spells could inflict maximum damage, while, on the other hand, the orc legion had limited mastery over magic. Aside from the support of heavy weapons and cannons, they could only rely on blessings from totems to fend off the magic attacks from the allied forces.
This battle lasted a full three months, and yet, despite such fierce fighting, the casualties on both sides did not exceed thirty percent.
Meanwhile, outside the Demon Abyss, Tai’e also became aware of the troop movements of several major powers and their intentions. He decisively ordered an all-out strike on the Holy Divine Empire, attempting to alleviate the pressure on the orc army in the Demon Abyss.
The peace brought about by Lu Hong’s grand wedding was ultimately shattered. The borders between the two great empires were ablaze with never-ending warfare, resulting in heavy casualties.
Konstantin sat anxiously atop the throne, awaiting battle reports from all directions.
"Your Majesty, we have achieved a great victory in the Ashmi plane, annihilating a hundred thousand orc soldiers. We are currently reorganizing. Please give your instructions!" someone reported.
Hearing the news of victory, Konstantin nodded in satisfaction. Then he turned his head to look at the Star Sea territory map and, after a moment of thought, said, "Tell Florin to hold his forces for the time being. Tai’e will not give up the fight for it, we must not become complacent!"
As Konstantin’s voice fell, another servant charged into the court and shouted, "Your Majesty, there is terrible news! We’ve lost the defense on the Noris plane, and now more than half of it has been overrun by the orc armies. General Red requests reinforcements!"
"Waste of space!" Konstantin cursed and then turned to Duke Nuoshan beside him. "Duke, I request your assistance."
Duke Nuoshan smiled faintly, "Your Majesty overstates. Both the Empire and the Alliance belong to the human race. Resisting the orcs is also saving ourselves. What talk is there of assistance?"
Nuoshan paused, then turned to his trusted follower below the court and said, "Robin, immediately send orders to Meg. Have him take his troops to Noris to assist General Red and retake the defense line."
Thus, within just ten short hours, the outcomes of the battles on more than thirty planes were relayed back to Jinrui. Nearly eighty percent of the planes failed to withstand the fierce offensive of the orc armies.
Fortunately, Duke Nuoshan’s timely assistance meant that the lost planes were recaptured, and the human race withstood the orc threat.
In the Imperial Palace of the Beastman Empire, Tai’e was staring intently at the Star Sea territory map. His foxkin adjutant was continuously changing markers—on the same plane, they had been replaced up to eight times.
This indicated that the orc army had seized the plane eight times, but ultimately, it had been snatched back by the humans each time.
With each replacement of a marker, it signified that another brutal war had come to an end.
Standing beside him, Eferot could not bear it any longer and spoke up, "Your Majesty, if we continue to fight recklessly like this, injuring the enemy a thousand while losing eight hundred, is it really worth it?"
Tai’e glanced at his son out of the corner of his eye, "The Demon Abyss is currently under attack by the empire; we need to find a way to alleviate the pressure on Barre."
"But why are you so certain that the empire is attacking the Demon Abyss?"
"If the empire were not attacking the Demon Abyss, the situation at the border wouldn’t be so volatile. Humans are lacking in troops and have to continually redeploy their legions." Keeping his eyes fixed on the territory map, Tai’e pondered for a moment then said, "Eferot, tomorrow I will concentrate our main forces on the Campbell, Yeks, and Worton planes. You will lead a surprise attack from the More plane. We must be swift in this battle! Before the human alliance can react, seize it!"
"Yes," Eferot nodded in agreement and added, "After taking down the More Plane, I request to continue pressing inward, to exert sufficient pressure on the Sacred Empire."
"No," Tai’e shook his head, "Once you conquer More, you stay there. You’re not permitted to go anywhere else."
"Why?" Eferot was taken aback, "Is just taking More enough?"
"Of course not, a single border plane is hardly enough to affect Konstantin’s deployments."
"But..."
Eferot wanted to ask more but was interrupted by Tai’e, "Just do as I say, you will understand why."
After dismissing Eferot, Tai’e turned to the full room of Beastman generals and asked, "Gentlemen, who among you is willing to die for the Empire?"
No sooner had the words left his mouth than a group of generals stepped forward and knelt, "Your subordinate is willing!"
"Good," Tai’e nodded, "After Eferot takes More, I need each of you to immediately lead a thousand-man squad and move with the utmost speed to various major planes within the Sacred Empire, causing as much destruction as possible. But remember, do not trap yourselves within those planes and prepare escape routes in advance."
Tai’e pointed to several major planes on the territorial map, "These planes are key for supplying the Empire with food, weaponry, and other materials. They are your primary targets for destruction."
Tai’e did not provide a definite timeline for this operation, meaning that once these generals begin their sabotage within the Empire’s major planes, it’s essentially a one-way trip.
In the second fortification of the northern border, Lu Hong also received news about the outbreak of the Star Sea war. Faced with this conflict, Lu Hong wanted to stop it, but was utterly powerless. He couldn’t think of any reasons to persuade Tai’e to abandon the Great Demon Abyss, nor could he make Konstantin hand it over willingly.
Just a demon abyss, at worst blow it up.
Putting down the intelligence report in his hands, Lu Hong went to Questasa’s room.
Questasa, who lost an arm to a powerful being from the underworld, sat cross-legged on the bed, engaging in meditation. Hearing the noise at the door, she got up and called out, "Who is it?"
"It’s me."
Hearing Lu Hong’s voice, Questasa hurriedly opened the door, "Master, what brings you here?"
Without beating around the bush, Lu Hong went straight to the point, "Are you familiar with the Great Demon Abyss?"
Questasa nodded, "I have some knowledge of it."
"What exactly is it?"
Questasa invited Lu Hong into her room, then began to explain, "The Empire has been researching the Great Demon Abyss for many years. According to the information I once accessed about it, it can be summed up in two words—’portal’."
"Portal?"
"Yes," Questasa nodded, "Each year, the Empire sees many of its top scholars volunteer to participate in the Empire’s secret projects, venturing into the Great Demon Abyss to conduct their studies. After extensive research, these scholars came to a most convincing conclusion—that it’s a portal. They believe the Great Demon Abyss is a gateway to another world, a paradise for demon beasts and beastmen, hence it must never be opened. Of course, the Empire has not been able to find a way to open it to this day."
"What about completely destroying it?"
"I’m afraid not, the space of the Great Demon Abyss is incredibly stable. Several generations of Great Emperors have had this idea, but all failed in the end. Therefore, the Great Demon Abyss can only be sealed, not destroyed."
"Alright," Lu Hong said helplessly, "The Beastmen and the Empire are at war again. Sigh."
Seeing Lu Hong’s mood was downcast, Questasa comforted him, "Master, every race has the right to fight for its survival. You may find this war unnecessary, but for the Beastman Empire and our Human Race, it is about the continuation of a species."
"I’m not without understanding, it’s just the timing is wrong. Are they not aware of the threat from the underworld? Now is not the time to fight incessantly over the Great Demon Abyss. What is most important at the moment is to join forces to deal with the hidden danger of the underworld. Once we completely drive the forces of the underworld out of the Star Sea, they can fight however they like, and I will not interfere."
