Mr. CEO's Substitute Bride-Chapter 956 - 952: You Earn What You Work For—That’s the Rule
Spending time with Sophie Foster makes Nicholas Croft feel comfortable. At least she doesn’t stick to him like glue like some women do.
Moreover, he can see that this seemingly wild and bold little kitten always keeps her distance from him.
After chatting for a while, Sophie Foster glanced at her sports watch on her wrist, toasted Nicholas Croft, put down her glass, and apologetically said, "Handsome uncle, it’s getting late, I have to get going."
With a casual glance, Nicholas Croft reached into the pocket of his coat, pulled out his wallet, and threw it on the low table, "Help yourself!"
Usually a credit card spender, today he intentionally brought a lot of cash.
Looking at the bulging wallet, Sophie Foster hesitated for a moment, then reached out to pick it up. She opened the wallet, pulled out five bills from a thick wad of cash, closed the wallet, and put it back. She grabbed her wig, waved the bills in her hand, and cheerfully said, "Thanks, handsome uncle!"
"Why not take more?" Nicholas Croft leaned back on the sofa, sipping his whiskey casually while playfully watching Sophie Foster. She chuckled meaningfully and said, "Handsome uncle, you should get paid according to what you do, that’s the rule."
After speaking, she stood up, waved at Nicholas Croft, "Bye-bye, handsome uncle, have fun!"
Watching Sophie Foster’s departing back, Nicholas Croft’s lips curled into a slight smile.
She’s a clever little thing, afraid that he might pester her, and of course, it’s a form of rejection.
Sipping his whiskey leisurely, Nicholas Croft’s eyes showed a hint of an inexplicable emotion. Rarely does he encounter someone so unique, indifferent to his wealth and looks — such a distinctive little kitten that he couldn’t bear to let slip away.
...
After taking a cab back to her rental apartment, Sophie Foster tossed her backpack onto the small sofa and headed straight to the kitchen. She dug out a pack of instant noodles from the cabinet, placed it in the milk pot, added water, and lit the stove, taking advantage of the cooking time to wash up in the bathroom.
In the morning, the alarm on the phone by her pillow woke her on time. Sophie Foster suddenly opened her eyes. After two years of solo striving, being cranky in the morning was not something she experienced.
Jumping out of her single bed, she shuffled into the living room wearing cartoon slippers and dressed in pajamas printed with cartoon characters.
She washed her face at the washbasin and squeezed some toothpaste to brush her teeth in front of the mirror.
Without the cover of makeup, the girl’s face in the mirror appeared much fresher, though perhaps due to late nights, her complexion seemed rather dull — an appearance not fitting for a girl her age.
After brushing her teeth, she cleaned her toothbrush and returned it to its place. She simply fashioned her long loose hair into a bun in front of the mirror, changed into jeans and a wool jacket. Before leaving the apartment, she called her landlord, "Mrs. Liu, do you have some time now? I’d like to pay next month’s rent... Yeah, I made quite a bit these days..." Sophie Foster continued talking on the phone while locking the door with her key, "Okay, I’ll wire it to your bank later..."
Exiting the apartment building, its old-fashioned units didn’t even have locks on the entrance doors, which were wide open facing the street. Downstairs, breakfast places and snack shops lined up side by side.
She stopped by a stall at the bakery, took off her backpack, and pulled out some small change, "One three-dollar egg pancake, thanks!" 𝘧𝘳𝘦ℯ𝓌𝘦𝒷𝘯𝑜𝑣𝘦𝓁.𝒸𝘰𝓂
The shop owner took the change and smiled while placing the pancake in a paper bag, "Young lady, still eating this, aren’t you tired of it?"
"No, the more I eat your pancakes, the more I crave them," Sophie Foster replied with a smile, taking the paper bag and nibbling as she walked to the intersection.
Standing at the bus stop, in stark contrast to her nightclub persona with makeup and non-traditional style, the fresh-faced girl boarded a bus, found a seat at the back, and continued eating her breakfast.
