Mr. CEO's Substitute Bride-Chapter 957 - 953: I Can Take Care of Myself
Sophie Foster has two jobs, distributing flyers during the day and singing at night venues. Although neither job pays much, it’s enough for her to support herself.
Moreover, with her academic qualifications, it’s very difficult to find a high-paying job in this fiercely competitive society.
Just as she finished eating a hand-held pancake, the bus conveniently arrived at the stop. After getting off with other passengers, she walked ten minutes to the flyer pick-up location.
Changing into the koala cartoon costume, she stood on the street with a large stack of flyers, handing them out one by one to passersby.
Although distributing flyers would often earn disdain and scorn from pedestrians, what was truly unbearable was during the summer, standing under the scorching sun in over thirty-degree heat, wearing a furry cartoon costume. Last year, Sophie Foster suffered heatstroke and fainted directly on the street.
Distributing flyers also had a fixed schedule. During her lunch break, Sophie Foster received a call she most wished not to answer; it was from her biological father. For over a decade, she only found out she had a father when her mother became critically ill.
Sophie Foster resented this sudden appearance of her biological father. Back then, when her mother was sick, she had begged him to send her mother abroad for treatment, but his response was, "She’s already got cancer. No matter where she’s treated, the result will be the same..."
If her biological father’s family were ordinary, her request might have been excessive. But wasn’t he the owner of such a big company that he couldn’t even afford to pay her mother’s medical fees?
Thus, after her mother’s death, her biological father fulfilled his promise to her mother to take her in, but she refused.
For over a decade, the father’s column was empty. Now that she has grown up and can support herself, she doesn’t need someone with ulterior motives to take care of her.
Despite her reluctance, Sophie Foster still picked up the phone because she knew if she didn’t answer, he would keep calling relentlessly.
Sophie pressed the phone against her ear, her hand clad in furry paws. Even with a koala mask on her head, one could imagine her facial expression just by hearing her voice. 𝙛𝒓𝒆𝙚𝒘𝒆𝓫𝙣𝓸𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝒄𝒐𝓶
"What is it?"
"Lara, I’m in the café across from you. Come over,"
"I don’t have time!" Sophie coldly refused.
"Lara, don’t be so stubborn, okay? I promised your mother I’d take care of you,"
"There’s no need. I can take care of myself." On the other end, before the man could finish speaking, Sophie cut him off and hung up the call, tossing the phone into the big pouch in front of her cartoon outfit.
In the café across the street, a middle-aged man in a suit sat by the window, gazing out at the "koala" being constantly turned away by pedestrians. He sighed, then called for the bill.
...
At four in the afternoon, Sophie Foster finished work, collected her day’s wage of fifty yuan, put it in her backpack, and walked towards the nearby bank.
She had promised Grandma Liu in the morning that she would deposit the rent into her bank account today.
After leaving the ATM, she headed back to the bus stop for a ride home. While boiling noodles, Sophie added two eggs for herself, as this month’s rent was settled early, so she didn’t have to be too frugal.
A large bowl of noodles and two eggs served as both her lunch and dinner. After finishing the noodles, she checked the time, seeing it was not yet six o’clock, pushed the empty bowl aside, and got up to her bedroom for a nap.
From prolonged day-and-night work, Sophie Foster most envied the ability to wake up naturally. If possible, she wouldn’t want to stay up late; she’d like to lean on the sofa, eat snacks, and watch TV like ordinary girls.
