Mr. Warner, Your Wife is Running Away Again!-Chapter 118: It Couldn’t Be Her
Shane drove straight to the hospital, and when he arrived at Lan Irving’s ward, he saw Audrey Sutton looking around inside.
He pushed the door open and found Lan Irving lying on the bed with her eyes closed, still on an IV drip, uncertain if she was asleep.
"What are you looking for?" he asked Audrey in a lowered voice.
Only then did Audrey notice his arrival, and she smiled, saying, "Not looking for anything. Just bored and taking a look around."
"Why did you come here?"
Perhaps seeing that Lan was asleep, he deliberately whispered as he spoke.
Audrey, however, raised her voice intentionally and said to Shane, "If you can come, why can’t I? Secretary Irving got injured saving you, after all. As your wife, it’s only right for me to come and show some concern."
As she spoke, Lan Irving slowly opened her eyes on the bed, her pale face looking weak and powerless. She looked at Shane and said, "President Warner, why are you here?"
Shane stepped closer and stood by the bed, looking down at Lan Irving, asking her in his usual neutral tone, "Feeling better?"
Lan Irving nodded, "Much better. The doctor said to rest for another two days, and if there’s no more issues, I can be discharged."
"Alright, I’ll have Faye Xavier give you a half-month leave, so you can rest well."
"Thank you for your kindness, President Warner. But I’ve rested enough at the hospital, no need for a leave. Once discharged, I wish to return to work as soon as possible."
Shane nodded, speaking in a formal tone, "Anyway, don’t push yourself. Rest if you need to."
Lan Irving softly acknowledged, then glanced at Audrey before looking at Shane, saying, "President Warner, there’s something I’d like to discuss with you alone."
Shane turned his head to look at Audrey, then said, "It’s okay, go ahead and say it."
Lan Irving looked at Audrey, hesitated, clearly showing her reluctance to speak with Audrey present.
Audrey wasn’t foolish; she could tell, but didn’t know what tricks Lan Irving was up to. Yet she pretended to be magnanimous, smiled, and said, "Then you two talk, honey, I’ll wait for you downstairs."
Shane worried she might have her little feelings, and seeing her turn back at the door to smile sweetly at him, "Honey, don’t keep me waiting too long."
After saying that, she closed the door, not knowing if she truly left or stayed outside listening.
When it came to other women acting coy, Shane only felt creeped out, but with her, it stirred something tender in his heart.
"President Warner." Lan Irving called to him, snapping him back from his reverie.
"I watched today’s interview, but I don’t think this incident was accidental," Lan Irving said.
Shane paused and asked her, "What do you mean?"
Lan Irving struggled to prop herself up and sit on the bed. Shane, seeing her struggles, reached out to assist her.
After sitting up, Lan Irving continued, "Don’t you think it’s too coincidental? And even if the person is indeed mentally disturbed, he was clearly after you, with a strong purpose, obviously instructed by someone."
"What have you discovered?"
Lan Irving shook her head, "Nothing concrete yet, just some guesses. I think you should not suspect your second brother this time. Even if he truly had thoughts of monopolizing the inheritance, he wouldn’t use such a foolish approach."
Shane had his thoughts but wanted to hear different perspectives, "Then who do you think it is?"
Lan Irving: "I know you and your wife have a good relationship now. You might not like to hear this, but I think it’s necessary to bring it up."
"President Warner, have you considered that someone might be deliberately using the discord between you and your second brother to create misunderstandings between you, so that whether it’s you or the outsiders, when such things happen, the first thought is that your second brother hired someone to kill, deepening your conflict, leading to internal fighting and dragging down the Warner Group... Who benefits from this?"
Shane nodded slightly, acknowledging that Lan Irving’s analysis made some sense.
Lan Irving: "I just speculate, is there a possibility that it’s the Suttons?"
"It couldn’t be her." Shane immediately dismissed Lan Irving’s notion.
Lan Irving further explained, "I’m not suspecting your wife, just thinking maybe she was used by her family to do such a foolish thing."
"I said it’s not her. You just rest, I’ll investigate this matter thoroughly."
After saying this, Shane turned and left the ward.
He never doubted Audrey Sutton.
Firstly, the Suttons never desired anything from them. Unlike the Warner family, the Suttons focus on their affairs and wouldn’t resort to such self-serving deeds.
Secondly, in times of danger, Audrey instinctively shielded him without thinking. Such a reaction can’t be faked.
Moreover, her mind was capable of verbal spars with Lan Irving and Clarissa Morgan, but planning a murder? She couldn’t manage that.
Shane pushed the door open and scanned both sides of the hallway, surprised to find she had indeed left.
With her nature, shouldn’t she be sneaking around by the door eavesdropping?
He’d just taken the trouble to defend her.
Down in the lobby, he saw her sitting on a chair playing with her phone, waiting for him.
Shane walked over and patted her head, "Let’s go."
Audrey glanced back at him, hastily put her phone away, and trotted beside him.
Walking alongside him, she stole several glances, wanting to speak but staying silent.
"This isn’t like you," Shane spoke first.
Audrey looked at him, puzzled.
"Aren’t you going to ask what I talked about with Lan Irving?"
He hit right on Audrey’s curiosity. Though eager to know, she feigned indifference, "...If you didn’t want me to hear, why should I ask? If you don’t want to say, asking won’t make you tell me."
"You’ve gained some insight."
They reached the car, and he opened the door to let her sit in the passenger seat. Then, he got into the driver’s seat and drove off.
Audrey sneaked a couple more looks at him, realizing he truly wasn’t going to divulge.
Having said what she did, she was too embarrassed to ask again.
So she kept her curiosity bottled up, constantly speculating about what was discussed.
Hospital.
"Creak—" The ward door was gently pushed open.
A nurse inside was assisting Lan Irving with her wound dressing.
Upon seeing Ivan Yardley enter, Lan hurriedly pulled up the half-lowered hospital gown, "What are you doing here?"
Ivan placed the bouquet he brought on the bedside table, glanced at the wound on her back, and said blandly, "Came to check on you."
Lan said nothing further. Once the nurse finished dressing the wound and left, she began buttoning her shirt, saying, "Aren’t you worried coming to see me might lead them to trace back to you?"
