Mr. Warner, Your Wife is Running Away Again!-Chapter 122: Long-Forgotten Concern
Franklin Sutton finished speaking, turned around, and glared at the two people standing at the door, looking serious as he said, "What are you standing around for? Keep checking the other rooms!"
After speaking, Franklin Sutton hurriedly slipped out, and after closing the door, he slapped each of the two people on the forehead, lowering his voice to angrily scold, "Do you two only know Shane Warner and not my sister?!"
Inside the room, Audrey Sutton looked at Shane’s bloodied lip and asked worriedly, "Are you... okay? Do you need to go to the hospital for a check?"
Shane casually wiped it with the back of his hand and looked down at her, "Are you done showering?"
Just now, Audrey had hurriedly put on her nightgown, without wearing anything underneath.
Realizing Shane’s scrutinizing gaze, she quickly turned around and grabbed the bath towel from the bed to cover up.
Shane walked to the bed with a faint smile, picked up a pack of cigarettes and a lighter, and pointed behind his ear, saying to Audrey, "Here... there’s still some foam."
Audrey reached up and touched it; it indeed hadn’t been rinsed off properly. She quickly turned towards the bathroom but paused and turned back to ask, "Are you really okay? My brother graduated from the police academy and has a heavy hand, so you’d better go to the hospital for a checkup in case of internal injuries."
"Go take your shower."
Audrey paused for a few seconds, watching Shane walk out onto the balcony to light a cigarette. After several moments of hesitation, she returned to the bathroom.
Hearing a knock on the door again made her jump, but she sighed in relief when she confirmed it was just the delivery arriving after she turned off the faucet.
After dressing, she walked out to find the delivery placed on the table by the window, while he was still smoking on the balcony.
Audrey wasn’t sure if he was mad at her second brother. She opened the delivery bag, took out the contents, arranged the bowls and chopsticks, and then called to him, "Come eat."
He glanced back at her and replied indifferently, "You eat first."
Although Audrey was hungry, she couldn’t eat in peace without addressing his mood.
She picked up her chopsticks but set them down again, got up, and went over to him. She glanced at the cigarette almost burnt out in his hand, then at the slightly swollen right side of his face.
It didn’t make him any less handsome, but with his current brooding expression, it was somewhat comical.
She didn’t dare laugh at him and cautiously asked him, "Are you angry?"
Shane glanced at her, extinguishing the nearly finished cigarette in the ashtray. His voice was as gentle as the current pleasant night breeze, "Why would I be angry?"
"My second brother is a bit impulsive; don’t take it personally with him."
"Hmm."
And with that, he said no more.
It seemed like he put an end to the conversation. Audrey opened her mouth but wasn’t sure if she should continue.
His words made it seem like he was being unyielding, but his cold demeanor perfectly demonstrated his duplicity.
It seemed men, too, can be two-faced when they’re upset, not just women.
Shane glanced at her again, seeing her cautiously nervous posture, he couldn’t help but lose his temper.
He wasn’t actually angry with her or anyone specifically; he was just irritated at having been punched out of nowhere.
Seeing her struggle to come up with something to say, Shane finally moved, heading back into the room while saying, "Let’s eat."
Seeing his reaction, Audrey finally relaxed a little, immediately turning to follow him back inside.
Once he picked up the bowl and chopsticks, Audrey sat across from him, watching him pause his chopsticks at the edge of the spicy hot pot like he found the messy concoction unpleasant.
To demonstrate, Audrey picked up a meatball and put it in her mouth, "This place has really good food, try some! I’m sure you’ll want it again after just one bite!"
Shane put his chopsticks into the pot but only lifted out a piece of green vegetable, frowning as soon as he put it in his mouth.
Audrey quickly asked, "What’s wrong? Doesn’t it taste good?"
Shane frowned without saying anything, using his chopsticks to pick up a small ball of rice to eat.
Only then did Audrey realize why he was frowning. Seeing the swelling on his right cheek, she asked, "Does it hurt a lot?"
"Eat your food."
Audrey pouted slightly, eating quietly without saying anything more.
Seeing her eating ravenously, Shane assumed she was just very hungry.
Once she finished the bowl of rice, she put down her chopsticks in a hurry, grabbed a jacket, picked up her bag, and headed to the door.
He finally asked, "Where are you going?"
While putting on her shoes, Audrey said, "I’m going to the downstairs supermarket to buy something."
"What are you buying?"
"Girls’ stuff."
Recalling that she got her period today and probably forgot her pads, and knowing the supermarket was just downstairs at the hotel, Shane didn’t say more.
When about ten minutes passed and she still hadn’t returned, Shane couldn’t resist calling her, "Did you get lost?"
"Almost done, almost done! I’ll hang up now."
Shane looked at the phone she’d hung up so abruptly, his eyebrows furrowing again.
He heard noises through the phone that sounded chaotic but not like a street, wondering where she had gone.
"Knock knock knock—"
Hearing the knocking, Shane immediately got up to open the door, seeing Audrey standing outside. Just as he was about to ask why it took so long, he saw her shake the small bag in her hand with a pharmacy logo on it, "I went to the pharmacy to get some medicine, and then got a boiled egg from the hotel’s kitchen. Come sit over here; applying it will make the swelling go down quickly."
After hearing her explanation, the frown instantly vanished from Shane’s forehead, and an involuntary smile curved on his lips.
Sitting on the bed, Shane let Audrey dip a cotton swab in medicine and gently dab it on his swollen face. Despite being very gentle, she furrowed her brow and asked, "Does it hurt?"
"Not as delicate as you."
From his expression, it almost seemed like she felt more pain than he did.
"Okay, after the medicine dries a bit, use the egg to compress it."
Finishing up, she expertly peeled the egg, wrapped it in gauze bought from the pharmacy, secured it with a small rubber band, hesitated a moment, and handed it to him, "You do it yourself."
As Shane took the egg, he felt warmer inside than the warm egg in his hand.
Being cared for like this seemed a distant memory.
He remembered it well, back when his brother was around.
No matter if it was an injury or a cold, the one who cared most was his brother.
Since his brother’s passing, such care had been long absent.
Watching Audrey turn to crouch down and pet the cat, Shane couldn’t take his eyes off her for a long time.
He realized he might really be unable to do without her, feeling like something was missing from his heart even if he didn’t see her for just one day.
