Chapter 121: Chapter 121: Betraying My Sister

The firefighter saw the dog running towards them, saving the trouble of finding the owner, and walked over with Pea in his arms, saying, "Is your dog trained or something? We saw it in the hallway, carrying this little cat downstairs."

Audrey Sutton quickly took Pea, whose eyes were wide open, probably still confused about why it was being carried by a dog.

"Thank you so much, really appreciate it!" Audrey quickly expressed her gratitude.

"No problem, it’s our duty. The fire is pretty much under control now, but we still need to check the scene for any explosive hazards, so I’d appreciate it if you could all wait downstairs for a while." After speaking, the firefighter plunged back into the building.

Cats are naturally sensitive, and Pea, with its tail tucked in, nestled in Audrey’s arms. Seeing the unfamiliar surroundings and being surrounded by so many people and commotion, it nervously looked around.

Uneasy, it stretched out a claw and clung tightly to Audrey’s sweater.

Its claw pierced through the sweater and onto Audrey’s skin, "Ouch, ouch."

Shane Warner watched her trying to detach Pea, but Pea’s claws were caught in Audrey’s sweater.

Shane Warner frowned and gently removed Pea’s claws, and Audrey handed the cat over to him: "You hold it for a bit, it’s too easy for it to snag on my sweater."

Shane Warner, visibly repulsed by the shedding Pea, held it out in the air for a while, and when Pea started to struggle uncomfortably, he reluctantly held it in his arms.

Audrey squatted and petted General’s head, saying, "Lucky General knows how to open doors, our General is so smart!"

Shane Warner was visibly displeased, white cat fur instantly clinging to his black suit. Anywhere Pea touched, it left traces.

Especially with its big tail sweeping around, Shane Warner sighed in resignation, deciding to ignore the cat fur on him.

After the fire was under control, they saw two stretchers carried from the ambulance into the building. Shortly after, two bodies covered in white sheets were quickly loaded into the vehicle.

The crowd immediately started discussing: "Oh, so tragic! They must have burned to death!"

A middle-aged woman nearby said, "I live across from them. It’s that young couple. I heard them arguing this morning, thought about going over to mediate, but no one answered after knocking for a long time."

Audrey’s gaze fell, showing some sorrow.

Shane Warner watched her and understood she was a girl who felt compassion and pity for strangers’ misfortunes.

However, he now suspected whether this fire was a follow-up to the funeral incident.

After more than two hours of rescue, the fire finally ended.

When the elevator was operational again, it was nearly six in the evening.

Back upstairs, the smell of burnt lingered in the apartment.

The interior of the apartment wasn’t damaged, but the balcony windows had shattered, the walls were blackened by smoke, and the balcony flowers were all burnt to ash, nothing survived.

After looking around, Shane Warner said, "Someone needs to come and redo the place, let’s stay at a hotel tonight."

"What about Pea and General?"

"They’ll come with us."

"Let me go pack some cat litter."

Shane Warner booked a hotel, just opposite The Heritage Manor.

Audrey only had to hold General, while Shane Warner carried a nervous, uneasy Pea in one arm and cat litter along with clothes in the other.

At the hotel reception while checking in, they saw two officers in uniform investigating something, seemingly related to today’s fire.

Upstairs, in the room, while Shane Warner showered, Audrey lay on the bed and ordered takeout.

...

Arthur Sutton, eating instant noodles at the police station, received a phone call: "Captain Sutton, I think we just saw your brother-in-law."

Arthur Sutton was indifferent, his tone even a bit impatient: "What does it matter if you saw him?! Do you want me to go over and give him a ceremonial welcome?"

"No... I saw..."

"Just speak up, don’t beat around the bush like some old lady."

"We saw him... checking into a hotel with a woman."

"What?!" Franklin Sutton’s anger came through the phone, and the instant noodles didn’t taste as good anymore. He immediately grabbed his police hat, stood up, and asked while walking out, "Which hotel?"

...

Shane Warner came out of the bathroom to find Audrey sprawled on the bed. He said to her, "You’re covered in fur and still rolling on the bed, go shower!"

Audrey immediately sat up, laughing at him from the edge of the bed, "I ordered spicy hot pot."

Seeing Shane Warner give her a look, she quickly added, "Just mildly spicy!"

"Go shower now!"

"Okay." Not daring to delay, Audrey quickly grabbed her pajamas and ran into the bathroom.

While drying his hair, Shane Warner received a call from Faye Xavier: "Master Shane, it really was just an accident, young couple arguing, a moment of rashness caused the tragedy."

Learning it was an accident, Shane Warner finally sighed with relief. His caution was out of concern for Audrey Sutton’s involvement.

Midway through Audrey’s shower, there was a knock at the door.

Is the takeout here already?

Shane Warner lightly kicked Pea away from his legs and turned to open the door.

As soon as he cracked the door, it was forcibly swung open from outside.

Before Shane Warner could react, someone grabbed him by the collar, landing a heavy punch on the right side of his face.

The blow wasn’t a joke, even his throat tasted metallic.

Shane Warner frowned, looking at his attacker, perplexed, when he heard Franklin Sutton gripping his collar, hysterically saying, "I’m here to bust a cheater, come with me, and bring out that woman in there!"

Shane Warner frowned in silence, while Franklin Sutton continued to rant: "I want to see which vixen it is!"

"Woof, woof," General barked protectively, lunging at Franklin Sutton.

Hearing the dog bark made Audrey Sutton realize something was wrong, as General was incredibly gentle and rarely barked.

She quickly turned off the faucet, and in the ensuing quiet, heard a familiar voice outside, shouting: "Where’s the person? Bring them out so I can see who’s attractive enough for you to betray my sister!"

Audrey was momentarily confused and didn’t understand the situation, but hearing her brother’s tone made her sense something was amiss.

She hurriedly dried herself, threw on a nightgown, and rushed out, seeing Franklin Sutton pinning Shane Warner against the wall, questioning him.

Shane Warner was expressionless, but his eyes clearly showed his displeasure.

If it weren’t for the fact that the assailant was Audrey Sutton’s brother, which could cause complications for her, Shane Warner might have already fought back.

"Brother?!" Audrey stared in confusion at the pair, then at the two officers standing by the door, who seemed familiar—they were the ones they had seen at the hotel reception.

"Little Audrey?" Franklin Sutton was also a little taken aback upon seeing her.

"Brother, what are you doing?"

Shane Warner finally spoke, his tone slightly mocking: "Your brother is busting for cheaters."

"What?" Audrey was even more confused.

Franklin Sutton’s mouth twitched, looking at Audrey, then at Shane Warner with a bloody mouth, changing his fierce demeanor to an awkward smile as he released Shane Warner’s robe collar, smoothing out the creases he made: "Misunderstanding, it’s all a misunderstanding, brother-in-law, don’t take it to heart."
