Chapter 85- Moments Of Reflection

Luna stared at Jack’s back, completely in awe at his words. There was not a single shred of fear she could feel in him. Even though she knew he carried the most pressure amongst everyone there, since he was expected to stop this invasion and be the hero he always was.

He knew more than everyone how bad the situation is and yet... Even when he had the right to be afraid or even worried, he didn’t show that, not in front of her, not in front of anybody.

He was simply dazzling. Jack never ceased to amaze Luna, from the very first moment they met. In fact, precisely because he was so captivating, they met in the first place. Luna, who had always thought that she would never find herself interested in any man, found herself completely addicted to this person.

She always yearned for him, thought about him, and even when she is sleeping, dreamt about him. He took over her mind and soul in ways she didn’t even know were possible. He was simply the most important thing that ever happened in her life. He changed her as a person and made her better. She felt happiness for the first time in her life when she saw him.

Just remembering those moments of pure bliss, the time when everything seemed to go perfectly. Yet, she had ruined it all with her own hands; she had destroyed her future and made her beloved despise her greatly. That was her biggest regret in life.

Everything came crashing down, and she couldn’t stop it. She was swept away due to her own stupidity. She wished every single night that she would wake up and that all of it was simply a nightmare, and she was still living that dream.

But it was all for naught. She had lost, and she will never be able to recover from it.

’He’s shining brightly, as he always did... And I threw away that guiding light.’ Her eyes flickered with countless emotions as tears welled up in them. However, she looked down quickly and wiped her eyes. She can’t cry now, it wasn’t the right time for that.

"I think we have healing potions. Drink one and try to recover. I might need you later if you can move." Jack said and then started walking away.

"Alex! Come here."

"Yes?"

"I want you to gather all the soldiers and protect the flanks and the backside of the group. The invasion will happen at any moment. I’m going to try and stop it."

"I can do that, I think. But... How many of these insects do you think are still alive?" Alex asked anxiously.

"Many. The good thing is that many were also killed in the first step. I’m expecting far less of a threat from them now. Still, it could very much wipe this entire group if we don’t defend ourselves properly. I will try my best to stop this invasion. But, I want you to make sure no attack happens while I’m away."

"I understand. Leave it to me."

"Also give Luna a healing potion; she’s in dire need of one. Her condition is far from favorable."

"I will see to it. But... What about your leg, Jack? It looks so horrendous."

Looking down, Jack noticed that his leg was actually not as painful as earlier. It felt numb now, which meant the healing process had already started.

"All I need is to level up once, and then it should recover immediately. I will deal with it for now."

"I see... Here, I have several healing potions; use one."

The boy took the potion and chugged it down. He felt a warm sensation take over his body and spread everywhere. The pain in his body and aching from all the injuries subsided considerably, and he was able to feel a bit more relaxed. Even his leg felt a tiny bit better.

"Thank you."

"It’s nothing. You don’t need to thank me. We are brothers forever." Alex grinned.

Staring at his friend, Jack could only faintly smile too. That was the Alex he knew. Even with everything that happened, he was still the same bright guy he is. He never lets anything change his personality, and that was one of the reasons why Jack became friends with him. He knew for a fact this boy would never cheat or deceive. He was far too pure for that.

Even though he doesn’t say it much, Jack deep down felt grateful that he got to have someone like Alex as a friend. He was one of the few he trusted.

With that, the boy turned around and left. Alex watched his silhouette as he moved.

"Be careful, Jack. We will protect ourselves here."

The situation deeper into the city was still as chaotic as ever, if not worse. The buildings that fell were in the thousands. From high above, one would see large chunks of destruction everywhere.

The pulsations of energy devastated every part of the world, and while Jack’s city was deep in land, the coastal cities of all the major countries in the world were drowned by unstoppable tsunamis. The world had never seen a destruction of this level since the meteor that killed all the dinosaurs. In fact, this was perhaps worse since it wiped away more creatures from the face of the world.

It was a brutal and unforgiving change, and those who survived were the ones who took the risk and fought to get stronger.

Amidst this chaos, Jack was the only one who understood everything. He was aware, and that made him more prone to panic than everyone else. Precisely because he knew that he was facing something way stronger than him.

A natural selection of the highest order.

Moving through the destruction, Jack moved toward the area where he had left the insects. His eyes remained on the skies above to see if they were moving there. But, he didn’t find any.

"Hmm, I doubt they would attack from above. The Aether pulsations are devastating, and they won’t be able to handle it. Climbing a large pile of rubble, he looked around him for any sign of his targets.

That was when he saw it in the distance. Moving very slowly toward him was the swarm of insects. They were flying at low altitudes, as if they wanted to avoid the pulsations as much as possible.

"Hmmm, they look heavily weakened as I expected."

Even though their numbers were still in the tens of thousands, they were far from the millions Jack saw before. He assumed the change had taken care of the majority of them and only left a few in comparison.

"Well, this makes my task easier. I need to take a good position and attack." Looking around him, Jack located a perfect spot to ambush them and perhaps take care of more enemies before the real battle starts.

Meanwhile, the swarm continued its slow march through the destroyed city, unaware of the boy waiting for them. Many of them were injured and tired from the constant bombardment of energy, so the pace was considerably slower. Even the larger ones looked rather disoriented or panicked.

Jack charged his sword with lightning and the Myth’s Resolve as he waited for them. Then, he patiently waited for the perfect opportunity.

’I need to hit as many as possible.’ He mused as he sucked a deep breath. I’m close to leveling up and I need to do that before they realize I’m here.

If Jack can heal before the battle, that would be perfect and it would increase his chances of survival a lot. Fighting with a broken leg makes the task ten times harder. So, the first attack was key and he knew that.

’Not yet... They must get closer. I need to target the larger ones.’

He watched like a predator, calculating the possible best moment to attack. The nerve was strong, feeling every moment passing slowly. Everyone’s hope of survival relies on him doing this right.

Closing his eyes for a moment, Jack finally exhaled as he grabbed the sword with both hands.

’I’m going to send you all to the deepest parts of hell. For all the trouble you gave me.’ He clenched his teeth and then.

*Swish*

Shooting out of his hiding spot, Jack slashed with his sword diagonally, sending an immensely powerful sword slash toward the heart of the group.

*BOOOOOOM*

The hit was violent, sending a shockwave several dozen feet in every direction. Many were instantly sliced or incinerated, while others were caught in the shockwave. The entire horde was instantly scattered everywhere, leaving a gaping hole in the middle. Many large Namoks die,d and with them, an unfathomable number of the smaller Namoks.

A long series of notifications rolled down Jack’s retina as he anxiously waited for the sweet sound of leveling up. However... He received nothing.

Jack hadn’t leveled up.
