Chapter 678

Anton arrived at the Western section of New Drennor, where most of the armies from the two kingdoms of Ormunda and New Drennor, and the remnants of Mendoza's armies, gathered. He felt a little overwhelmed at the huge number of people, but everything looked organized. He had to admit that, ever since he joined the fight against the Undead Coalition, there had been a sense of looseness in the organization to which he was assigned. It was a little understandable since he and the other volunteers were not part of the army but a collection of adventurers who joined the fight against the undead.

Now, though, everything looked prim and proper. Anton had no idea how to become part of something like the army without going through the basics. Even if he was asked to join, Anton would disagree since he already had the power to contend with the undead. He was a specialist and would not work together with a formal army team. The only thing he knew was for someone to point him in a specific direction where the enemy was located and command him to cast his spells. 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝐰𝚎𝕓𝐧𝚘𝘃𝗲𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝕞

Anton knew that more than likely, he and others like him would still be designated as part of a special group that would handle specific missions.

Thankfully, he did not have to ask anyone who was walking about, who looked like they had goals that they needed to complete as soon as possible, since the instructions on how to find information were clearly written on huge boards, like street signs.

When he asked where he could find Captain Nando and the rest of the independent wizards who fought against the undead in the fortified village, he was directed to a section of the camp located somewhere to the left.

Soon, he found one of the members of his old squad, and he was directed to the building that hosted their team. Captain Nando was in his office. He learned that his captain was now handling ten squads with a total number of 100 powerful wizards and warriors.

Captain Nando was a Supreme Rank wizard just like Anton, but he was officially confirmed by the council of wizards in Ormunda, unlike Anton, who was still unconfirmed. The only thing he knew about confirming his status as a Supreme Rank wizard was that it was a long process spanning weeks, and it was all about bureaucracy, which in Anton’s young mind was a waste of time.

Right at that moment, Anton and his family were functioning fine without the need for him to confirm his status as a Supreme Rank wizard. He knew that confirming his status would bring a lot of advantages for him and his family, but he would probably do that at a later time, when there was a lull in the fight against the undead.

“Anton, I’m glad that you followed your promise of reporting back after a week. How’s your vacation?” Captain Nando asked.

“It was nice and relaxing. So, what am I supposed to do next?” Anton asked.

“First, the armies from the three kingdoms are handling the fight against the Undead Coalition without any issue. We’re expecting to drive them off from New Drennor in two weeks. Regarding taking back Mendoza from the Coalition, that one was going to be extremely difficult, but it’s not our problem. That one is going to be handled by the higher-ups of the three kingdoms. Regarding our department, we were formally dismissed but asked to assume independent work. Meaning, we will handle missions that will be posted to the mission board, like the one the Adventurer Guild has.”

“What does it mean?”

“I’m about to tell you, so hold your horses. That means that you have several options. One, you can quit now and return to Ormunda. You're only eighteen. I recommend entering one of the magic academies so you can be formally inducted into the ranks of the powerful wizards of Ormunda. Two, you can join a team and handle specific missions issued by the army if you really want to continue the fight. Three, you form your own independent group and do the same thing. Last, you can formally ask to join the army. With your power, you will climb the ranks in an extremely short amount of time.”

Anton was bewildered. He felt several emotions flowing out of him, but the most prominent ones were a confusing mix of relief, indignation, silliness, and more unexplained emotions.

He felt silly for always thinking that it was the end of the world. That the Undead Coalition would conquer everything. Now, looking at Ormunda and New Drennor without the cloud of fear that was always hovering above him, he knew that both kingdoms were just too massive and powerful to be easily conquered. Anton could not be faulted for thinking negatively about the status of the kingdoms. Mendoza was easily conquered by the undead. He now knew that Mendoza should not be compared to New Drennor or Ormunda. Mendoza was, at most, just a huge town.

Anton felt indignant. He was ready to give the rest of his life fighting the undead. That had always been his goal ever since he transmigrated to this world. But now he knew that time had been granted to him. He still would fight against the undead, but he could do so without feeling the pressure that it needed to be done right away. He probably now had the time to grow.

He also felt relieved since Anton would be able to rest. His father and Anna could also focus on other things instead of thinking that they had to grow in power as soon as possible, so they could defend themselves and their family against the Undead Coalition.

Antion knew that it was his fault that his father and his sister adopted his negative attitude about life. Again, they could not be faulted since their village, their country, and members of their family and friends were destroyed by the undead.

Other emotions were bubbling from Anton that he could not identify. Thankfully, Captain Nando had given him time to process his emotions.

“I understand a little what you’re going through. I’ve read your profile and know why you wanted to fight the Coalition, but now you can use the time to grow, and once you’ve become one of the most powerful beings of this world, which I’m sure you will achieve, you can bring the fight against the Coalition,” Captain Nando said.

Anton felt enlightened. Captain Nando was right. He could use the time to grow, and once he’s powerful enough, he could return to Rendindura and attack the Undead Coalition's base. This time, though, he could enjoy his life a little.

He felt a little guilty. A lot of his friends and their families had died, and he thought that he would be spending his life avenging them. Anton knew that he needed to rest. For the past year, the only thing on his mind was to increase his power so he could fight against the undead. It was consuming him, and one week of vacation would not be able to release the stress and tension that had accumulated inside him.

Anton had decided that he truly needed a long vacation.

“Captain Nando, I admit that you’re wise. I will follow your recommendations and resign. I’ll go back to Ormunda and continue my studies. I will not stop my ambition of destroying the Undead Coalition, but you’re correct that I will need more power to do so, and given that I’ve been given this time, I will try my best to accumulate that power. Thank you for having me.”

“Excellent. I will write a report regarding your decision and will send your remuneration to your manor in Ormunda,” Captain Nando said.

After that, Anton said goodbye and left the captain’s office. He still felt confused, but for some weird reason, since everything that he did to fight the undead was his choice, he felt free.
