“Elder, Enforcer Gongshu has been badly wounded. He says it’s urgent.”

“Gongshu Yang? Bring him in.”

“Yes!”

The door opened, and the servants helped the unsteady Gongshu Yang inside. As he crossed the threshold, he stumbled and collapsed forward.

Elder Liu swept in gracefully, catching him before he hit the floor. She opened her mouth to ask, “Who did this to y—?”

However, a sudden chill stabbed through her chest, followed by searing pain. A hidden blade had pierced her heart from Gongshu Yang’s sleeve and was now protruding from her back, its tip slick with blood.

Worried she might strike back before dying, Gongshu Yang flung her aside forcefully. Then, with a swift flick of his sleeve, he sent a short sword flying behind him. The blade whistled through the air and impaled the servant standing in the doorway, taking him through the throat.

In a flash, Gongshu Yang darted over, dragged the servant’s body inside, and quietly shut the door.

Elder Liu slammed against a wall and slid down, blood gushing from her chest and soaking her black robe’s white trim. Even as her life seeped away, realization dawned on her.

That whole story about the 16 missing disciples? It might have been nothing but a ruse—a tactic to lure the tiger from the mountain.

Gongshu Yang, cold and ruthless, saw that Elder Liu was paralyzed from his attack. He lunged forward and slashed her throat for good measure, then retrieved his blades, shoved open a rear window, and vaulted outside.

Moments later, he was heading toward the meat field on the outskirts of the inner district. Once there, he pulled a signal tube from his coat, opened it, and blew into it.

A deafening boom shattered the sky as fireworks exploded overhead. Almost immediately, a second set of fireworks lit up in the distance outside the inner district.

Out by Silver Creek, a group that had been watching for this very signal suddenly leapt to their feet. Making use of the faint, dawn-gray light, they surged toward the stream at once.

After firing the flare, Gongshu Yang rushed off toward the meat field. There was still another seventh rank elder he needed to deal with.

Even before approaching, he could feel waves of stifling heat distorting the air above those fields, which stretched out like a raw, crimson flame across the ground. The autumn drizzle that fell into the fields didn’t soak in like normal soil.

Instead, it turned into water vapor and rose as a thick steam that shrouded the entire area and nearby woodland. Despite the season, the mist felt more like a sweltering summer haze than a chill autumn drizzle.

At the edge of the meat field stood a small shack where Elder Tian was fanning himself. The humid air made it impossible to sleep. Though he’d guarded this field for so long, he still had no idea what caused them to form—or why no one could move or expand or destroy them.

He’d even tried cultivating more land beside the meat field in hopes the meat would spread, but nothing happened. He tried throwing scraps of meat from the field over to the neighboring plot, but they never merged. He tried digging up the soil after a harvest, only to find the ground beneath was scorching hot and unbelievably dense. No matter what he did, he couldn’t make a dent in it.

He let his thoughts drift amid the rising haze, the air thick with steam but not the slightest scent of blood. Then, off in the distance, he heard frantic footsteps.

“Who goes there?” Elder Tian called out.

“Elder Tian, it's me. Trouble...big trouble...” A figure hurried closer.

“Enforcer Gongshu? What are you doing here? And what’s with all the blood?”

“The Sun Family and Wei remnants...they’ve attacked. There’s a traitor inside the inner district. I...I got injured... Cough...cough...!”

Doubling over and clutching his chest, Gongshu Yang staggered forward.

That flare just now! Elder Tian recalled the light in the sky earlier. That must have been their signal. But how strong could this traitor have been to have wounded Gongshu Yang?

Wait a minute... Elder Tian paused, realizing something amiss. Gongshu Yang isn’t even supposed to be here. He was assigned to Union Town. When did he—

Before Elder Tian could finish the thought, the hunched figure sprang up like lightning, a cold glint flashing in his hand.

Elder Tian flung himself backward, managing to evade the blow if only slightly. A shallow cut still bled along his flank.

Without another word, Elder Tian reached for his blade, but Gongshu Yang flicked his wrist, sending a short sword whistling toward him.

Elder Tian dodged again, only for Gongshu Yang to charge straight in and close the gap.

Elder Tian, unable to fully draw his weapon, thrust both palms forward to force Gongshu Yang back. Their energies clashed in a thunderous impact, launching them apart.

Landing lightly, Gongshu Yang slid to a halt on solid ground.

Meanwhile, Elder Tian came down hard on the fleshy surface of the meat field. He slammed a palm against the edge to vault himself free, but a sudden streak of icy light flashed in his peripheral vision.

A short sword flew at his hand.

KLANG! The blood veil formed by his shadow blood deflected the blade. Still, the brief distraction gave Gongshu Yang time to pounce, short sword slicing downward.

Elder Tian twisted away, and the two traded more than a dozen blows in rapid succession. He tried repeatedly to scramble back onto solid land, but Gongshu Yang kept him pinned down.

At last, Elder Tian missed a step. Gongshu Yang kicked him hard, sending him tumbling further into the meat field.

Fearing his blood would touch the fleshy ground, Elder Tian mustered his internal power to seal the wounds he had. If even a drop of blood spilled onto the meat field, he knew all too well what would happen. He sprang up, desperate to make it back to the solid bank.

Gongshu Yang lunged in to stop him, and another fierce exchange followed. In the end, Elder Tian couldn’t keep up. He was injured again and stumbled deeper into the pulsing red mass.

This time, his wounds were too severe to fully contain. In an instant, the horrors of the meat fields became real—like water seeping into dry cotton, Elder Tian’s entire body was pulled under with a wet, sucking sound. His final scream ended abruptly as he vanished into the meat field, lost forever—consumed, perhaps, as fertilizer for the ever-hungry flesh.

Gongshu Yang let out a long breath and flashed a satisfied grin. That’s both elders taken care of; the demon enclosure and puppet pavilion should already be under control too.

The bigger picture was clear now; victory was all but assured.

Gongshu Yang turned around and trekked back. All that's left is to let the others through the main gate.
