My Seven Wives in One Body and Me, her Manager-Chapter 118: The Haunted Rooftop
Meanwhile, on the roof of the dormitory apartment where Dennis and Daisy lived, "dziiing," "crack," a bug crawler approaching the apartment complex collapsed, its body shattered by a sniper shot. "Ckrek," Dahlia cocked her sniper rifle and continued to monitor the streets around the apartment complex, which were crawling with bug crawlers, tusk crawlers, spider chameleons, Blob Mantises, and more. Almost all the corpses had died from a single shot from the rooftop. As Dahlia scanned the area, Donna perched on the railing right beside her like a cat, glancing over at Dahlia.
"Dahlia, let’s go home. If our husband gets back and we aren’t there, he’ll be angry," Donna said.
"Be patient, just a little longer. Besides, there’s no way our husband and Daisy are coming home anytime soon," Dahlia replied while scanning the surroundings through her scope.
"Uuuh... I want to go out or play games. I’m bored at home with nothing to do since the power is out. Daphne has it easy, just lying around reading books... I hope we get out of the center of darkness soon," Donna grumbled.
"Be patient. Besides, if you want to go out, just go, but don’t wander too far," Dahlia replied casually.
"No way, it’s too risky. We can’t even disguise ourselves yet; we’ll just end up in trouble again and get scolded by our husband... getting scolded is one thing, but what if he hates us? I don’t want that," replied Donna, who was now sitting on the railing.
Donna looked around and, out of boredom, began to annoy Dahlia by following the direction of her sniper rifle.
"Hey... don’t bother me," Dahlia said.
"I’m booooored," Donna shouted.
Dahlia immediately pulled Donna down to hide behind the wall. The two of them peeked slightly at the street, where several hunters were passing by. They looked confused, seeing the sheer number of monster corpses scattered across the road, scratching their heads whether they were actually itchy or not.
Their voices began to break the silence, though it wasn’t clear what they were saying. Then, the hunters started scanning the area, likely looking for whoever had killed all the monsters in the street. After making sure no one else was around, they began gathering the monster parts left behind to sell later.
Dahlia and Donna, watching what the hunters were doing, lowered their heads and leaned against the edge of the roof wall. They looked at each other and laughed, then leaned back comfortably and stretched out their legs.
"Good thing we weren’t seen," Dahlia said casually.
"Ah... wouldn’t matter even if we were; we’re too far away," Donna replied.
Suddenly, "blam," the rooftop door swung open with a bang. Dahlia and Donna immediately whipped their heads toward the door and saw Daphne, still clutching a book and wearing her pajamas, looking breathless from the climb. Daphne rushed toward Dahlia and Donna, who instantly pulled her down to a crouch as she approached. "Kyaaah," Daphne let out a yelp, but her mouth was quickly covered by Dahlia and Donna at the same time.
One of the hunters looked up toward the roof, but when he didn’t see anyone there, he just shrugged his shoulders and went back to his business of harvesting monster parts. Then, slowly, Dahlia and Donna removed their hands from Daphne’s mouth after making her promise not to scream, which she answered with a nod.
They explained what was happening and showed the hunters below to her. Once her mouth was free, Dahlia spoke softly.
"What’s going on? Why did you come up here?" Dahlia asked quietly.
"Yeah, why does your face look like you’ve seen a ghost?" Donna added in a low voice.
"Look at this," Daphne said, pointing to a small holographic screen above her head.
Dahlia and Donna looked at the small hologram above Daphne’s head, and their eyes instantly widened. Their time spent outside showed 23 months, which meant Dennis was already at level 80. Then, before their shock could even fade, the time increased to 25 months; Dennis had jumped another two levels to 82. Dahlia and Donna immediately looked at each other and then checked the small holographic screens above their own heads. After that, without a second thought—
"Yeeeeeeey!"
Dahlia and Donna stood straight up and let out a cheering shout. Daphne immediately yanked both of them back down into a seated position to hide. The hunters who were harvesting monster parts jumped to their feet, going on high alert and readying their weapons. They scanned the area, their faces clearly showing their confusion after hearing a girl’s voice echoing through the silence, before they eventually went back to their work.
Meanwhile, the girls on the roof began to cheer silently, jumping around while staying crouched, spinning and holding hands in pure joy. Once they had finished celebrating, they sat back down to relax.
"How did you even notice? I thought you were busy reading," Donna said.
"I went to the bathroom because I had to pee, then I washed my hands and saw the numbers above my head," Daphne replied.
"You brought a novel into the bathroom?" Dahlia asked, glancing at the book in Daphne’s hand.
"So what? It’s fine, isn’t it? As long as it doesn’t get wet," Daphne answered, holding her novel up.
"Wow... looks like Daisy, Diana, Deborah, and Dulcia are working hard... lucky them... too bad I’m stuck here and getting bored," Donna replied, leaning against the wall with her hands behind her head.
"Be patient. Once we’re far from the center of darkness and back on track, the power and Wi-Fi will be back on. It won’t be much longer, so just wait," Daphne replied casually.
"But our plan worked, didn’t it? That’s what matters," Dahlia said.
"Huu... I know, but it’s still boring," Donna replied, pouting.
"Alright, alright... come here so you won’t be bored," Daphne said, scooting toward Donna.
Daphne pulled Donna closer and rested Donna’s head on her lap. Then she began to scratch and stroke behind Donna’s ears; Donna immediately looked cheerful, curling up as she giggled from the tickling. Dahlia turned around and slowly climbed up the wall.
"Hmm... looks like those hunters are still there," Dahlia muttered, peeking down.
"Just leave them be; they’ll go away eventually," Daphne replied while stroking Donna’s head.
Suddenly, "bum," a loud thud echoed beside the three of them and the roof shuddered. Slowly, Dahlia turned around, Daphne glanced sideways, and Donna stood up to face the noise. Behind them sat a giant monster—a thousand-legged caterpillar with the head of a fly and wide butterfly wings that scattered powder from its body.
"Sami, what kind of monster is coming at us now?" Daphne asked in her head.
[Thousand-Legger Butterfly, Rank A. Please, ladies, feel free to kill it.]
Dahlia, Donna, and Daphne’s faces instantly broke into wide grins. Dahlia turned to see the hunters below; they seemed to have realized a monster was on the roof because of its massive size, and they looked terrified, moving with extreme caution. But suddenly, Donna vanished. In an instant, she slashed off both of the butterfly wings, while Dahlia took out both its eyes with her sniper rifle. As the monster curled up to protect itself, Donna opened a portal beneath it. The monster reappeared in mid-air from a portal opening above them, and then—"sriiiing"—Daphne flew up and cleaved the monster’s body in two with her giant scythe. The separated halves of the creature plummeted to the ground.
Upon landing, Daphne immediately high-fived Donna and Dahlia, and they checked the screens above their heads. "Yesss," the three of them cheered silently. The reason was clear: Dennis had reached level 90, and their time outside as clones had hit 33 months. Meanwhile, the hunters below stood stunned, their jaws literally dropping. They had watched a massive, winged black scythe appear out of nowhere and split a monster in half, which now lay between the buildings.
The hunters looked around and realized the monster corpses everywhere were the work of something non-human. If it were a human, especially a hunter, they would never leave valuable monster parts scattered in the street without harvesting them—that was all money, after all. They began to whisper among themselves.
"Did you see that?" one hunter asked.
"Y... yeah, what was that scythe just now... terrifying," the other hunter replied.
"It’s like a grim reaper... let’s just get out of here," a female hunter urged.
"Yeah, let’s go... come on... it’s scary here. If we mess up, we might be the next targets. I bet all these monsters are victims of that grim reaper. Besides, we heard a girl laughing and saw those shadows, didn’t we?" another female hunter added.
"Right... you’re right. I’m actually getting goosebumps... let’s just go, leave it all behind," the first male hunter said, rubbing the chills on his arms.
They finally decided to run, and from then on, the roof of Dennis and Daisy’s apartment building was declared haunted—home to a messenger of death carrying a massive, winged black scythe that could easily take down A-rank monsters. The rumors were fueled by the sound of girls’ laughter and strange, mysterious shadows lingering on the dark rooftop.
