Chapter 48: Time’s Up (1)

Two weeks passed, and the banquet celebrating the foundation day of the Valemere Kingdom had started yesterday.

Ellis was naturally not invited, due to his age... but he doubted there would have been any change, even if he was already an adult.

Luckily, even without being there, news still traveled fast inside this royal ground.

And so, he already got to know what he wanted... as in, who had been decided to be the crown prince.

Fortunately, it was not the first prince. Instead, it was the fourth prince... the most talented one among the current princes and princesses.

Was that really true?

Naturally, no!

He was here, after all.

But, he didn’t care about any of that.

Something like fame... to be acknowledged by others... was the last thing he wanted!

Anyway, the most important thing now, was that the fourth prince was not the son of the queen.

And so, her authority would not be the same anymore.

This would likely be a delicate period for her, and so, these two maids would likely be pulled back soon. If not, they will be left on their own.

And he was waiting eagerly for that moment.

It’s then that he would finally change his attitude, after all.

With a gleam in his eyes, and filled with anticipation, Ellis, while having many thoughts, still continued his training.

...Before long, a servant really came to the palace, bringing a message from the queen to the two maids.

And Ellis, hearing everything through his Detection skill, couldn’t help but start grinning.

He felt that he could finally pay back the two maids who took care of him.

And so, he stopped his training and rose from his seated position.

He started walking outside of his room, toward the training ground.

And Silas, who had been by his side, not training due to his order during these past two days, trailed a step behind him in a nature way.

She seemed to have thought of something, but she didn’t say a word.

She simply waited for him to tell her the reason that he finally came out from his room, after nearly two months now.

And so, Ellis, who was sure that the servant from the queen’s side had already left, turned his head toward her and said, "Go, and call the two maids... it’s finally time."

Silas had her eyes gleam with killing intent the instant his words were said.

She had barely been enduring herself, holding back only because of Ellis’s command.

But now, she could finally unleash all the fury hidden inside her.

"Understood," she said, her voice low, but her footsteps, as she headed in a different direction, were powerful.

It seemed as if she was going to battle, rather than fetching just two powerless maids. And Ellis couldn’t help but chuckle at that.

Not minding it, Ellis continued on his way... while still listening to the conversation going on between Grenda and Brunna.

...

Looking at the training ground that he had not used for two months now, Ellis was filled with thoughts.

He was reminded of one year ago, when he had first started training with Galen, and how he had been filled with anticipation.

And how, ironically, he was also filled with anticipation at this moment.

As this moment could also be another milestone in his life here, in this world!

While he was still in a melancholy mood, Silas arrived with the two maids.

Grenda greeted him timidly, even more so than usual.

But Brunna was as usual, calm, as if nothing had happened... as if she hadn’t just argued with Grenda, insisting that she wanted to continue staying and try to see if she could kill him!

And so, without replying to either of them, Ellis let his gaze alternate between Grenda and Brunna for some time, before he finally settled it on Brunna.

He looked at her with a smile that was not quite a smile, and asked, "So, you still want to try and see if you can kill me?"

He asked lightly... like he was asking how the weather was.

But Brunna, who heard him, finally lost the amiable smile on her face and froze.

Her face lost all color, just like the one who stood beside her, and she didn’t seem to know how to respond.

Both of them didn’t understand how he actually knew something they had just talked about... but that was the least of their worries for now.

All of their thoughts, were how they should save themselves from their current situation.

Grenda, who seemed to grasp the situation unfolding before her, immediately knelt on the ground and begged, "Please spare my life, Your Highness."

She pleaded with no intention of denying his accusation.

And Brunna, who finally came to her senses, knelt too.

Both of them started crying, asking for forgiveness, but Ellis didn’t say a word.

He simply looked at them with amusement.

It was Silas, standing at his side, who shouted in a loud voice, "Silence!"

It took a moment, and the brandishing of her sword, which she had brought along after changing her clothes, before the two maids quieted down.

Like a blanket, silence descended upon the training ground for some time, before finally, Ellis opened his mouth and said, "You are asking me to spare your life, but was it not you who tried all kinds of poison during these more than two months... to take my life?"

The two maids were unable to say a single word back to him, and so, Ellis asked again, "What do you think is the punishment for those who try to assassinate a member of the royal family?"

This question, more than the last, seemed to terrify them even further.

Their expressions twisted. Their knees trembled. Their lips quivered.

It was as if they had finally realized the shit they were in.

But each of them reacted differently.

Grenda suddenly threw herself to the ground and began hitting her forehead against it, over and over, as she pleaded, "I will do anything you want, Your Highness... please, please spare my life."

But Brunna?

She raised her head and glared at him... or something close to a glare.

Because in Ellis’s eyes, it was apparent that it just her way of masking her fear.
