Chapter 667: Ice cream

There was something about Kairo’s words— his calm, sure tone— helped to soothe her racing heart.

Coco blinked rapidly, feeling an unexpected rush of warmth flood her cheeks.

Oh, gosh. Coco mused in her mind, her heart skipping a beat, and before anyone could comment on it, she immediately buried the lower half of her face into the thick fur collar of her coat.

She buried her face so deep that only her wide, flustered eyes were the only visible part of her face now.

Everyone stared at Coco, not expecting such a reaction.

Zaque’s breath hitched, Quizen’s lips parted slightly, Heiren stiffened in his seat, and Alhai— well, Alhai just barely managed to keep his usual stoic expression from slipping into something far more stunned.

For a moment, the wagon was utterly silent, because they had rarely seen her like this.

And somehow.. Seeing such an expression on her.. It was devastatingly adorable and she was so cute for their eyes that she managed to steal their breaths as if they haven’t shared an intimate moment before.

The purple eyed hybrid that was sitting right beside her, slowly lifted a hand— as if debating whether to pull the collar down himself just to see her reaction, but wisely thought better of it.

Instead, he hummed. ".. Cute."

Coco made a muffled noise against her coat and it was something between a protest and a groan before she sank even further into it.

She was never living this down.

Alhai cleared his throat loudly, his gaze flickering to Jonathan before returning to the still furiously buried Coco.

He shifted awkwardly in his seat, struggling to think of a distraction.

"Anyway.." He spoke up, his voice sounding a little strained. "Like Kairo had said. It’s best to let Coco open up about herself at her own pace."

Jonathan sighed, his gaze lowering to the foam covered floor. "I’m not exactly forcing her to open up. I was just.. Just.. Encouraging it. I didn’t mean anything bad about it."

Sensing the tension in the wagon, Coco couldn’t help, but look at her friend.

She slowly emerged from the safety of her coat at Alhai’s words, her cheeks still dusted with a faint, but present flush.

She took a slow breath, exhaling through her nose as she composed herself.

"It’s fine, Alhai." She murmured, the words coming out somewhat quiet, almost hesitant, but it was genuine. "I don’t mind. Jonathan’s right anyway, but.."

Her gaze darted away, her expression faltering for a brief moment. "I still have this feeling.. This feeling that forces me to keep my mouth shut."

Jonathan’s face softened, a look of guilt flickering across his features as he took in Coco’s expression. He seriously didn’t mean to make her feel like this.

"I’m sorry, Coco." The mediator murmured, his tone earnest and apologetic. "That was very insensitive of me. You don’t have to if you don’t want to."

Everyone fell completely silent, because they all felt a twinge of guilt—

It wasn’t just Jonathan. They had been pushing her, too. Perhaps, they were hoping and pushing a little too hard.

The regret in Jonathan’s voice was clear and in spite of herself, something inside her softened at his words, so Coco gave him a soft smile and shook her head, dismissing his apology with a wave of her hand.

"It’s fine. Really." She assured him. "You did have a point."

She paused, her hand lifting to absentmindedly toy with a loose string on her coat as she hesitated for a moment.

"Besides.." She added, quieter this time. "I’ve been thinking for a while now that I should have said something about my last life by now., but I... I was just never sure where to start."

Jacques’ entire expression brightened instantly, her curiosity visibly piqued.

She leaned forward eagerly, so much so that she practically draped herself over Renaldo’s lap in the process, ignoring his gruff grumble of protest.

"Why not start with this thing you call ice cream?" The pink haired woman asked, her eyes practically sparkling with delight. "And the con— uh... Convince store?"

Coco blinked at the mispronunciation and couldn’t help, but let out a snort.

"It’s called a convenience store, Jacques." She corrected, unable to suppress the laugh bubbling up.

Jacques huffed, but didn’t seem bothered. "Whatever! Tell us!"

Coco hesitated, but with all eyes on her, she exhaled slowly. "Fine."

Coco grinned, the tension melting away as she warmed up to the topic and started gesturing animatedly while she spoke—

"Ice cream is a frozen dessert, usually made from milk or cream." She began, her tone lighter now and more relaxed. "They sweeten it with sugar or sometimes alternatives. They mix in flavors like cocoa, vanilla, or fruit."

Coco paused and tilted her head. "Well.. Most often than not, they use strawberries, peaches, and mangoes.. It depends, really."

No one dared to speak up because they truly felt curious. What is it even?

"Back home, we had endless flavors." Coco continued with her rambling, lips curled into a grin. "Rocky road, mint, caramel swirl, even matcha! But my favorite was always just plain chocolate with chocolate chips."

Then, her expression softened. "Carina and I used to fight over the last scoop sometimes."

Jacques stared at her, utterly entranced, but one thing caught her interest fully, so she voiced out her thoughts. "Matcha? What in the fairies’ names is that?"

Coco giggled at Jacques’ bewildered expression, shaking her head slightly.

Of all the flavors she listed, it was matcha that had caught her attention? With a good-natured smile, she tried to figure out how best to explain the dessert.

"Well.." She began, her brows wrinkling as she pondered over her words. "I don’t know much about it, but I know it’s nothing more than green tea. I’m not particularly fond of it either, to be honest. It’s a bit bitter."

"How about this caramel swirl?" Heiren asked, his eyes bright with intrigue as well.

"What about rocky road?"
